The No. 1-ranked Emory softball team was chosen as one the 61 teams to compete in this year's NCAA Division III championship field this morning and will be one of eight teams taking part in the Newport News, VA, Regional hosted by Christopher Newport University.
The Eagles of head coach Penny Siqueiros, 33-3 on the year, will be making the program's 10th appearance in the NCAAs in the 14-year history of the program. Emory is the No. 1 seed in the double-elimination regional and will battle No. 8 seed McDaniel College (27-12) on Thursday in a 10:00 a.m., star. The Green Terror earned an automatic bid to the tourney after capturing the Centennial Conference Tournament Championship this past weekend. Emory and McDaniel have met just once in softball with the Eagles prevailing by a 9-1 margin on March 19, 2004. The winner of the Emory-McDaniel contest advances to meet the winner of the No. 4 Messiah (35-8) vs. Roanoke College (29-9) game.
Other first-round games No. 3 seed Salisbury (35-5) take on No. 6 seed Ferrum College (35-12) and No. 2 seed Christopher Newport battle No. 7 seed Farmingdale State (26-13).
All games will be played at Captains Park on the CNU campus. Ticket prices are $15 & $6 for all-session (prices are adults & senior, students, children) and $5 & $2 for single day passes.
