Emory Softball Defeats Brandeis In UAA Tourney Action

The No. 9-ranked Emory softball team waited out inclement weather on Wednesday before capturing a victory over Brandeis University on the second day of play at the University Athletic Association Tournament.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 22-1, 2-1 in the league, following a six-inning, 14-6 decision over the Judges.

Emory saw seven of its players chalk up two or more hits, sparked by sophomore Hannah Sendel who turned in a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with four RBIs.  Sophomore center fielder Cortney Sugihara hit safely twice and knocked in three runs while senior second baseman Claire Bailey scored three runs, went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs.

Brandeis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Eagles got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame when Sendel delivered a run-scoring single that scored Bailey.  Emory took advantage of two BU errors in the second inning to score three runs, with Bailey figuring prominently with a two-out single that scored Sugihara and shortstop Moira Sullivan.  The Eagles stretched their lead via a three-run third inning that was keyed by a two-run double by Sugihara.   The Judges cut into Emory's lead by pushing across three runs in their half of the fourth with a two-run homer by Anya Kambar the big blow.

Holding a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, Emory stunned BU by scoring seven runs after the first two batters were retired.   Sugihara knocked in the first score with a single that scored Sullivan while a two-base hit by senior Ally Kersthold scored Sugihara.  Later in the inning, Sendel blasted a three-run homer, her fifth round tripper of the season, that ballooned Emory's advantage to 13-6.  Freshman Tara Fallahee would close out the contest with her single scoring junior Micah Scharff.

Emory returns to action on Thursday with games vs. Case Western at 10:00 am and Washington University at 12:30 pm.
