Emory Softball Splits Doubleheader At Maryville College

Emory Softball Splits Doubleheader At Maryville College

The No. 15 Emory softball team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule on Saturday with a split of a doubleheader at Maryville College.  The Eagles notched a six-inning, 10-1 win in the opener before seeing the host Scots post a 4-0 win in the finale.  Emory stands 36-7 on the year.

Emory used the long ball in coming away with the first-game triumph, socking three home runs that produced six runs.  Senior first baseman Megan Light accounted for the game's opening scoring when she propelled a three-run blast in the top of the first that jumped-started the Eagles to a five-run frame. A two-out double by junior Moira Sullivan scored Micah Scharff and Hannah Sendel with the other two runs.  The Eagles stretched their lead to 8-0 in the top of the second when Light hit another round tripper, a two-run shot that represented her 16th of the season, followed by a solo homer by Sendel, her 12th of the campaign.  Sendel knocked in Emory's final two runs with a bases-loaded double in the top of the sixth that scored senior Lauren Gorodestksy and freshman Taylor Forte.  Sendel ended the contest collecting three hits in four trips to the plate and drove in three runs while scoring a pair.  Light totaled five RBIs, tying her school-record of 61 that she set in 2011.  Senior pitcher Amanda Kardys picked up the victory, her 24th of the season in 25 decisions, hurling her 14th complete contest, allowing just four hits while striking out five and not issuing any walks.  Over her last seven games, Kardys has fanned 22 batters while walking just four in 35 innings of action.

In the second game, Emory picked up nine hits and had base runners in every inning, but couldn't push across any runs as it was blanked for the first time since the final contest of the 2011-12 season. Sullivan and freshman Tara Fallahee each hit safely twice for the Eagles.  The game was scoreless until Maryville pushed across three runs in its half of the fifth, followed by another run in the sixth.  Freshman Brittany File took the loss in the circle for the Emory, dropping her record to 10-5.
