Emory Softball Battles Covenant College & Berry College On The Road

The Emory softball team faces a pair of early-week road doubleheaders, starting on Tuesday (Mar. 1) when it ventures to Covenant College before travelling to Berry College the following afternoon.

The No. 9-ranked Eagles stand 22-2 in overall play and are riding an 11-game win streak after posting two Saturday wins over Wesleyan College.  Junior Micah Scharff hit .833 over the two contests, collecting five hits, including four doubles, in six trips to the plate.  Scharff also scored three runs and registered three RBIs.  Scharff's performance upped her season hitting mark to .404, good for 12th place among UAA players.  In addition, Scharff holds down the No. 3 spot on the conference chart with 10 doubles.   Junior Hannah Sendel tops the squad and is second in the UAA with a batting mark of .493 (33-of-67) while holding down the second position in home runs (9) and No.  3 slot in RBIs (33).  Sendel leads the team with 11 multi-hit contests and is tied with freshman Ashley Powers for first with eight multiple-RBI performances.   Sophomore Taylor Forte is hitting at a .407 clip (24-of-59), good for 10th place on the UAA list.

In the pitching department, junior Sydney Carpenter owns a 13-0 record with her win total the second highest among league hurlers.  Carpenter has crafted an ERA of 1.89, second in the league, over 74 innings of action with her 69 strikeouts the conference's third-highest mark.

Covenant College hosts Emory with an overall slate of 9-11.  The Lady Scots have dropped their last four games including 6-3 and 11-0 decisions last Saturday to North Carolina Wesleyan.  Led by seventh-year head Coach Sara Russell, Covenant's leading hitter is junior Morgan Lane with a mark of .433.  Lane leads the club with four homers and is second with 20 RBIs.   Sophomore Jordan Brett is close behind at .429 and has delivered a team-best 11 doubles.

Berry College is riding a hot streak with wins in its last 10 games that has boosted its record to 18-5.  The Vikings swept a four-game series at Sewanee this past weekend, coming away with a pair of 21-0 victories on Sunday.  Berry is hitting .390 as a team with sophomores Brittany Ferrell (.444) and Allison DeBusk (.435) key performers. In the circle, freshman Kassie Howard claims a 10-1 record along with an ERA of 0.80 over 61 1/3 innings of action.

Following the encounters against Covenant and Berry, the Eagles return home on Saturday (Apr. 4) to battle Birmingham Southern in a twinbill.
