Emory Softball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Wesleyan

Emory Softball Sweeps Doubleheader vs. Wesleyan

Freshman Allie Moberg's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning scored Cassie Baca with the deciding run, giving the Eagles a 2-1 win in the second game and a sweep of a doubleheader at Wesleyan College (Ga.) on Thursday evening.  Emory captured the first contest, a 12-1 five-inning verdict over the Wolves, and closed out the evening boosting its record to 9-7 on the year,

Baca led off the seventh with a triple to right field and scored when Moberg delivered her sac fly. The Eagles posted a seven-hit attack, with sophomore Sarah Katz and Baca registering a pair of safeties. Wesleyan got on the board with its lone score in its half of the third before the Eagles knotted things up in the top of the fourth when sophomore Greta Wilker stroked a sacrifice fly that plated Jessy McLean.  Junior Toko Miller recorded the win in the circle for Emory, tossing five solid frames of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

In the opener, the Eagles broke out the bats, establishing season highs in runs and with 13 hits.  Junior catcher Lana Herrmann came up with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate that included a run-producing double and a two-run homer.  Baca hit safely twice in four plate appearances and finished with a four-RBI night, a two-run single in the top of the second that staked the Eagles to a 3-1 advantage and another two-run single the following frame as part of a seven-run explosion.  Freshman pitcher Jacqueline Spizizen upped her record to 5-4 as part of a three-person corps that held the Wolves hitless over the game.  Spizizen hurled three innings of relief, fanning three batters.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Mar. 30) when it begins University Athletic Association play with a home doubleheader against Case Western Reserve.
