Emory Softball Takes Two From Covenant on Tuesday; Pitchers Schaefer, Feller Enjoy Career-Best Days

The Emory softball team swept Covenant College in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta. The Eagles beat the Scots 7-0 in the opening game, as junior Madison Schaefer struck out a career-high 10 batters, before senior Sami Feller helped her team triumph, 8-4, by coming on in relief in game two to pick up her first victory of the season.

In the first game, Schafer started out strong in the circle, retiring five out of the first six batters that she faced by strikeout. The Newtown, MA native would go on to punch out two more batters by strikeout in third and fourth innings, each, and finish with 10 in total. At the plate, the Eagles benefited from a rare fielder's interference in the bottom of the second inning to score their first run. Senior Greta Wilker was caught in a pickle between second and third but was contacted by an infielder and therefore was awarded third base. Sophomore Natalie Arreguin took advantage of the situation by singling Wilker home. Emory plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to an opposite-field Mattie Ryan double that allowed seniors Sarah Katz and Feller to score easily. Sophomore Megan Weisenberg tripled in the bottom of the fifth and was credited with two RBI, as her shot to centerfield pushed both Wilker and Ryan across the plate. A pair of clean singles from Katz and Feller in the sixth accounted for the final two runs of the ball game. Weisenberg went 3-4 in the first game of the day and was responsible for two RBI. The top of the lineup did most of the damage for the Eagles in game one. Leading off for Emory, Katz went 1-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. Feller batted behind Katz and was the only Eagle to have a two-hit day in game one. Both Mattie Ryan and Greta Wilker went 1-3 at the dish. Ryan had two RBI and Wilker scored two runs.

The Eagles' offensive attack got into gear early in the final game of the day, as Emory put up four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Two of those runs were scored on a Natalie Arreguin line drive up the middle, which gave both Weisenberg and Katz the chance to score. Senior Jessy McLean followed up Arreguin's hit with a single of her own that plated Feller and Arreguin. Freshman Trinity Pizzuti started the second game and pitched two innings, giving up four runs on three hits before giving way to Feller, who made the move to the circle from centerfield to begin the third frame. Feller took no time to settle in, striking out the side in the top of the third inning. Weisenberg enjoyed a 3-4 day at the dish and recorded RBIs in the fourth and sixth innings. The third basemen had a single to the gap in left center that scored Katz in the fourth, but her best swing of the day may have come in the sixth, when she drove a ball over the centerfield wall for a solo home run, her first blast of the season. Before Weisenberg's home run, Wilker registered two RBI in the fifth inning that gave Feller a cushion of runs that she would not need in the end. Feller ended her day in the circle with 7 strikeouts, which matched the senior's career high. In addition to Weisenberg, Arreguin and sophomore Krista Colussi also had multiple hits. Colussi, the Emory catcher, went 2-2 with two walks.

Emory's next action will take place in Tuscon, AZ, where the Eagles will play eight games this weekend in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Eagles' first game out west is against Saint Benedict and is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. EST Friday morning.
