Eagles Sweep Atlanta-Foe Agnes Scott in Doubleheader on St. Patrick’s Day

The Emory University softball team saw a doubleheader sweep against the Agnes Scott Scotties on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Eagles improve to 10-6 on the season with the wins while the Scotties fall to 7-10 after the losses. Emory scored a combined 25 runs in the matchup winning game one by a score of 12-7 and earning the shutout in game two, 13-0. Freshman Georgia Pineda earned her first collegiate win in game two while fellow freshman Abby Wylie saw her first collegiate hit.

Game 1: Emory 12, Agnes Scott 7

The Scotties struck first in the top of the first inning taking advantage of a throwing error from Emory to take a 1-0 lead after the first. The Eagles responded fast in the bottom half of the inning with sophomore Ashley Chu taking a leadoff walk before being brought in on a single from senior Page Nellis. With the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Sonia Klein struck out but was able to reach first on the dropped third strike with Nellis coming in on the play to give Emory a 2-1 lead.

Freshman Lexi Bach held the Scotties to two hits in the top of the second but was able to get out of the inning without a run. Freshman Ellie Zerr continued her RBI streak with a groundout in the bottom of the second to score senior Abby Sekoff who started the inning with a double.

Agnes Scott went on a scoring run in the third and fourth inning scoring four runs and taking advantage of two RBI doubles from its offense.

The Eagles were on the hunt for revenge and found it in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Grace Cooper started the inning with a single and later reached third after an error from the Scotties' defense. Sophomore Ella Hoyle followed with a single to score Cooper before back-to-back singles from the Eagles loaded the bases. A wild pitch from Agnes Scott brought in the first run for the Eagles before senior Leslie Berg, Chu and Nellis all singled scoring four more runs for Emory. Zerr ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field giving Emory a 10-5 lead.

The Scotties were able to tack on two more runs in the top of the sixth but Chu scored two more runs for the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 12-7 win.

 

Game 2: Emory 13, Agnes Scott 0

The bats came alive for the Eagles in game two scoring the most runs in a single game this season and their third shutout of the year.

The scoring started in the bottom of the first after a triple from Zerr and a single from Cooper brought in the first run for Emory. Three back-to-back singles from Hoyle, junior Kayla Lang and Klein brought in another run for the Eagles followed by a three-RBI double from freshman Lillian Ware. Wylie ended the scoring run with a single to left field, her first collegiate hit.

After a quick top of the second inning from Pineda in the circle, Zerr opened the bottom of the second with a two-run homer to left field, her fourth of the season to give Emory an 8-0 lead after the second.

Pineda allowed two singles in the top of the third inning but was able to record three quick outs to get out of the jam. Wylie followed with a double in the bottom half of the inning to score another run giving Emory its ninth run of the matchup.

Cooper and Berg combined for four RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning with three of those coming off of a double from Berg before sophomore Isabel Cohen finished the game in the circle and securing the game for the Eagles.

Emory will travel to LaGrange, Georgia on Friday, March 22 for a doubleheader with the LaGrange Panthers with game one slated to begin at 4:00 PM.
