2004-05 Women's Basketball Season Recap

In a season marked by growth, with only one senior, Emory University posted a 7-18 record.

A bright spot for the Eagles was their 61-59 upset of Brandeis (Mass.) then ranked third in the nation by d3hoops.com on Jan. 23. The win over then-undefeated Brandeis ranked among the most notable in school history, which includes a victory over the No. 1 team in the nation, New York University, on Feb. 7, 1997.

Sophomore Beth Bergmann was named to the all-conference second team. She had the 12th best free-throw percentage (.860) in the country this season. In conference games, Bergmann ranked first in free throw percentage and seventh in scoring.

As a team, Emory ranked first in the UAA in three-point field goal percentage in conference games.

Katie Anding
Sophomore Katie Anding received the team's Best Defensive Player award. She was second on the team with 41 steals in 25 games, including a seven-steal performance against Piedmont (Ga.) on Feb. 22. This was the third-most steals in a game in school history. Her season three-point field goal percentage was the best in the UAA in conference games. Anding set personal season-highs in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. She put up two of her best performances of the season against opponents nationally ranked by d3hoops.com. Anding scored 13 points against then 13th-ranked Washington (Mo.) on February 11, and dropped 11 points on then third-ranked Brandeis (Mass.) on Jan. 23.

Beth Bergmann
Bergmann was named to the all-conference second team and received Emory's Most Outstanding Player award. She finished the season ranked 12th in the nation with an 86.0 free-throw percentage. The sophomore's free-throw shooting was the best in the University Athletic Association in conference games. Bergmann ranked among conference leaders with the fourth-highest three-point field goal percentage, sixth-highest scoring average, and eighth-most steals per game in conference play. Bergmann led Emory this season in points, steals, free-throw percentage, and assists. Her 98 free throws broke the Emory single-season record and her free throw percentage was the third best mark in school history. She scored in double digits in 17 of her 25 games played, including four games in which she scored more than 20 points. Bergmann was named the conference's Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 24, in which she averaged 20 points against two nationally ranked opponents. Bergmann scored 24 points against New York U., then ranked 10th in the nation by d3hoops.com. She put up a "double double" to lead Emory to an upset over previously undefeated Brandeis (Mass.), then ranked third nationally by d3hoops. She scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out six assists to lead Emory to a 61-59 victory in that game. Bergmann scored her season-high 26 points against 13th-ranked Washington (Mo.) on Jan. 16, going 12 for 13 from the free throw line and getting five steals in the contest. She also led Emory in scoring with 13 points in the rematch against Brandeis, then ranked 15th nationally on Feb. 18.

Mackenzie Bisset
After missing the entire 2003-04 season with an injury, Bisset came back this year to win Emory's Sixth Player Award. Bisset played a pivotal role off the bench, scoring 7.1 points per game and ranking second on the team in three-point field goals. On Jan. 2, she led Emory to a win over Dallas (Texas) with a career-high 21 points off the bench, including five of six from three-point range. She scored in the double digits five times this season, including a 17-point performance against New York U. on Jan. 21, then ranked 10th in the nation by d3hoops.com.

Ashley Kahler
Kahler was a co-winner of the Emory Coach's Award. Kahler put up a .316 three-point field goal percentage, going six for 19 from beyond the arc. The sophomore scored a season-high six points off the bench against Washington (Mo.), then ranked 13th in the nation by d3hoops.com.

Lynn Oberschmidt
Oberschmidt, the team's Coach's Award co-winner, finished the season second on the team in points (10.8) per game, rebounds (5.5) and assists (1.5). The junior led the team in field goal percentage (.489) this season. After three seasons, her career field goal shooting percentage of .515 currently ranks second in school history. Oberschmidt achieved her career high in scoring when she racked up 24 points in a win over Oglethorpe (Ga.) on Dec. 1. She led the team in scoring 10 times this season.

Stephanie Rauner

Rauner was selected the team's Most Improved Player, leading the team with 15 blocks. The freshman put up 4.0 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. She scored in the double digits twice, both against conference opponents. She scored 11 points against Johns Hopkins (Md.) on November 20, the first game of her career. She helped Emory to a win over Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) with 10 points, two blocks and two steals on Jan. 28.

Katie Rizzo
Katie Rizzo was honored with Emory's Rookie of the Year award. The freshman started every game this season, finishing second on the team with a 41.8 field goal percentage and third in assists (32) and steals (27). She put up 3.0 points per game and grabbed 3.7 rebounds per game. She posted her season-high nine points in back-to-back wins against LaGrange (Ga.) on Nov. 28 and Oglethorpe (Ga.) on Dec. 1.
