2008-09 Athletes Of The Week

(Mar. 2) - Senior Lora Turner, playing in her final collegiate game, totaled a career-high 29 points in leading the Eagles to a 74-59 win over Case Western Reserve University.

Turner scored 19 points in the second half in helping Emory to a decisive 50-37 scoring edge over the visitors. She hit eight-of-nine from the floor and three-of-four the foul over the final 20 minutes of action in helping the Eagles shoot 51.5 percent from the floor in the half. For the game, she sank 13-of-17 from the field in registering her 23rd double-figure scoring contest of the year and 10th of 20 or more points. Turner also grabbed seven rebounds, second high on the team, and recorded three steals.

She ended the season by either leading or sharing for team scoring honors in 18 contests while claiming that distinction in rebounding in 12 outings. Turner finished 2008-09 with 419 total points, fourth on the school's seasonal ladder, as well as posting a school record 59.5 percent mark from the floor (174-of-292).


(Feb. 23) - Senior Lora Turner put together back-to-back double-doubles in a pair of UAA road games.

On Friday evening against Brandeis, the 5-foot-11 Turner tied for the team scoring lead with 17 points while pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. In Sunday's contest at No. 19 NYU, she finished with 10 points along with a game-high11 rebounds. Over the course of the two contests, she shot 50 percent from the field (9-of-18) and converted nine-of-13 from the foul line. Turner now has three consecutive double-doubles to her credit and four on the year. She has scored in double figures on 22 occasions this year and has either led or shared for the team's scoring lead in 17 games.

Career-wise, she ranks third on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,283 points and is eighth in rebounding with 608 boards.


(Feb. 9) - Senior Lora Turner led the Eagles in scoring and rebounding in a pair of UAA games over the weekend. 

In an 80-72 setback to No. 3 Rochester, the 5-foot-11 Turner totaled 21 points, hitting 10-of-13 from the field  and her only free throw attempt, and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.  In Sunday's 80-65 decision over Carnegie Mellon, she notched a season-high 24 points, again sinking 10-of-13 from the floor while converting four-of-six from the charity stripe while snaring a team-high nine boards. 

In the two games, she averaged 22.5 points, hitting on 76.9 percent from the floor (20-of-26) and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the foul line. Her back-to-back efforts of 20 or more points give her 19 double-figure scoring performances this season and eight of 20 or more points. 

Turner is averaging a team-high 16.7 points per outing and her 6.1 per-game effort in rebounding ranks her second on the squad.  She has either led or shared for team scoring honors on 15 occasions this year.


(Feb. 2) - Junior Whitney Martin helped the Eagles to a split of two UAA games over the weekend, averaging 11.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

In a 78-73 win over Carnegie Mellon, the 6-foot Martin totaled 14 points, hitting five-of-eight from the floor and all four of her free throw attempts en route to her third double-figure scoring effort of the season. In addition, she grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. In Sunday's contest against No. 5 Rochester, she notched eight points, second high on the team, and snagged eight boards, her 13th outing of six or more rebounds this campaign. In the two games, Martin shot 46.7 percent from the floor (7-of-15) while knocking down all eight of her free throw opportunities.

Through games played Feb. 1, she paces the team and holds down the No. 6 spot among UAA players in rebounding with a 6.7 per-game average. She has led or shared for team honors in that department in nine contests.


(Jan. 26) - Senior Lora Turner helped the Eagles to a split of two UAA games over the weekend, averaging 17.0 points and 6.5 rebounds.

In a 66-59 setback to No. 11 New York University, the 5-foot-11 Turner totaled a team-high 20 points, hitting eight-of-12 from the floor and four-of-six from the foul line. In addition, she tied for squad honors with eight rebounds. On Sunday, she helped Emory to its first conference victory of the season, a 69-56 triumph over No. 12 Brandeis, by registering 14 points (second high on the team), hitting six-of-nine from the floor and a pair of free throws, while contributing five rebounds. In the two outings, she converted 14-of-21 field goal attempts (66.7%).

So far this year, she has recorded double-figure scoring in 14 contests and has six performances of 20 or more points. She leads the team and the UAA with a 58.6 field goal percentage mark (106-of-181) in overall play.


(Jan. 12) - Senior Lora Turner led the Eagles in scoring in helping the team to a split of two games.

In an 85-45 win at home against Agnes Scott on Jan. 5, the 5-foot-11 Turner totaled a game-high 21 points, her fourth effort of 20 or more points this season, sinking nine-of-15 from the floor and three-of-four from the foul line. In the UAA opener at Case, Turner paced the Eagles in both scoring and rebounding with 17 points and seven boards. In the two contests, she hit on 65.3 percent from the floor (17-of-26) and four of six from the charity stripe.

Turner has notched double-figure scoring in all 11 Emory games and is hitting a team-best 57.4 percent of her field goal opportunities (74-of-129).


(Jan. 5) - Senior Lora Turner led the Eagles in scoring in helping the Eagles to a split of two games.

In a contest at Birmingham Southern (Dec. 30), The 5-foot-11 Turner hit seven-of-eight field goal attempts and both of her free throw opportunities in totaling 16 points. In an 86-53 triumph at home over Huntingdon College (Jan. 3), she led all players with 14 points and snared nine rebounds in helping Emory boost its record to 7-2.

Turner has scored in double figures in all nine Emory contests and has produced three efforts of 20 points.


(Dec. 8) - Senior Lora Turner paced the Eagles in scoring last week in helping the team to a split of two games.

In an 85-84 victory over No. 2-ranked Oglethorpe, Turner totaled a team-high 20 points and a pair of rebounds in 21 minutes of action. She hit six-of-11 from the floor and eight-of-10 from the line as Emory came away with a win over the highest-ranked opponent during Christy Thomaskutty's tenure as head coach.

The 5-foot-11 Turner followed that performance with a team highs in both points (15) and rebounds (8) in a 65-60 setback at Maryville College. In that contest, she knocked down seven-of-12 from the field and one-of-two from the charity stripe in notching her seventh double-figure scoring game of the season. In the Maryville game, Turner reached a milestone when she became just the seventh player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career.

In the two games, she averaged 17.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and shot 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the floor.


(Dec. 1) - Senior Jenny Kraus came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points while grabbing a season-best seven rebounds, second high on the club, in the Eagles' 74-60 win at Piedmont on November 25.

Kraus sank five-of-10 from the floor and four-of-seven from the foul line in 21 minutes of action. Her point total represented her second double-figure scoring effort of the campaign and helped Emory raise its record to 5-0, the program's first such five-game start since the 1997-98 season.


(Nov. 24) -Senior Kendall Boyd helped the team to a championship effort at the Emory Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend, averaging 17.0 points and 3.5 assists per game in wins over North Carolina Wesleyan and Baruch College.

In a 76-51 decision over the Lady Bishops of NCW, Boyd totaled 10 points, three assists and a pair of steals before coming through with a huge effort the next night against Baruch College where she paced the squad with a career-high 24 points. The 5-foot-5 Boyd sank eight-of-10 from the floor, including five-of-six from three-point range in helping the Eagles to the program's first 4-0 mark since the 1997-98 season.

In the two games, Boyd hit on 11-of-16 from the floor (.688) including seven-of-10 from beyond the arc.
