EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ADDS KIM COLEMAN TO STAFF
(June 8) - Emory University head women's basketball coach Christy
Thomaskutty has announced that Kim Coleman will be joining
the program as assistant coach. Coleman comes to the Eagles after a
successful five-year stint as head coach at Milton High School in
nearby Alpharetta. He guided the program to an overall record
of 99-43 along with five state playoff appearances. Under his
direction, the Lady Eagles captured the Region 6-AAAAA title in
2006 while finishing that campaign with a 25-4 won-lost mark.
"We are thrilled to have Kim Coleman as part of our staff," said
Thomaskutty. "He has a track record of success and combined
with his interpersonal skills and work ethic, he will be a great
fit here at Emory."
(May 22) - Emory University head women's basketball coach Christy
Thomaskutty has announced the appointment of Nora Jabbour as
assistant coach. Jabbour will begin her duties on June 1.
Jabbour comes to the Eagles' program from the United States
Military Academy where she served on head coach Dave Magarity's
staff for two seasons. Jabbour served as the Director of
Basketball Operations during the 2007-08 campaign before being
appointed assistant coach for the 2008-09 season. This past
year, Jabbour helped the Black Knights to an overall record of
19-12 including an 8-6 mark in the Patriot League, good for a
third-place tie. Army advanced to the semifinals of the
conference tournament for the first time in three years and ranked
eighth in the nation in scoring defense, surrendering just 53.2
points per game. In addition to her bench duties, Jabbour had
a myriad of other responsibilities including scouting opponents,
evaluating and recruiting players from 16 states in three regions
(Mid-West, Plains and Mid-Atlantic), overseeing the program's
budget, running individual workouts for the team's guards and
serving as the Director of the Army Women's Basketball Camp.
Prior to her stint at Army, Jabbour spent one year as the Marketing
Assistant in the front office of the Washington Wizards. There she
was responsible for coordinating several aspects of the Wizards'
marketing department such as database marketing efforts, creative
design for promotions and vendor contracts. Jabbour was
familiar with the Wizards' organization, having previously
spent time as Public Relations Intern and a team attendant for both
the Wizards and Washington Mystics from 2002-06.
"Nora is an outstanding young coach who will be a perfect fit here
at Emory," Thomaskutty said. "I was impressed the first time
that I spoke with her as she exudes an amazing energy and passion
for the game. She has outstanding people skills and has
acquired a tremendous knowledge base thus far in her career. Nora
will be a terrific instructor on the floor as well as an excellent
recruiter. Our players and I are all thrilled to have her join our
program."
Jabbour completed her undergraduate degree in three years from the
Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North
Carolina-Chapel Hill in August of 2006. While at UNC, Jabbour
served as the women's basketball team manager for two ACC
Championship teams and was on staff when UNC made a run to the
Final Four in 2006.
"I am excited and look forward to working at an institution as
prestigious as Emory University," Jabbour said. "I will have
the opportunity to work student-athletes who are devoted to winning
both on and off the court. The UAA is an extremely competitive and
highly regarded league and I am eager to learn from and assist
Coach Thomaskutty."
While in Chapel Hill, N.C., Jabbour assisted with the UNC
Basketball Camps, three-weeks of sessions that 4,500 high school
students attended. During the summer of 2002, she founded and
directed the "Shoot for the Stars" Basketball Camp in Silver
Spring, Md. Jabbour welcomed 22 underprivileged youth, ages 8-10,
after securing funding from 12 corporations and enlisting the help
of 15 volunteers.
Jabbour spent 2006-07 as an assistant coach for Bethesda-Chevy
Chase High School near Washington, D.C. Her primary duties included
scouting for a team that won the 3A/2A/1A Montgomery County
Division Championship for the first time in three decades.

(Feb. 22) - The Emory women's basketball team saw a late surge fall
short Sunday afternoon as No. 19 New York University topped the
Eagles. NYU raised its overall record to 20-4, 9-4 in the
University Athletic Association following a 71-60 triumph over the
Eagles who fell to 12-12, 3-10.
Junior LeShonda Lillard paced the Emory scoring attack with 13
points and dished out five assists. Senior Jenny Kraus
totaled 12 points while senior Lora Turner rounded out the team's
double-digit point producers with 10 points as well as pulling down
a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Violets used a hot shooting first-half to take a 42-32 edge at
halftime. NYU knocked down 61.9 percent of its field goal
opportunities (13-of-21) during the opening 20 minutes of play
while Emory converted 34.5 percent (10-of-29). NYU opened the
second half with a 12-6 scoring run to increase its margin to 54-38
with 15:02 remaining in the game. Emory responded with a 13-5
burst, with five different players scoring, to creep back to within
a 59-51 margin with 4:41 on the clock. After a NYU bucket by
Grace Carmen, Lillard answered with a score with 3:53 remaining to
keep the Eagles within eight points. NYU parlayed an Emory
turnover into a subsequent layup to lay claim to an 11-point
cushion with 1:45 left. Emory then made another comeback bid
as a basket by Turner and three-pointer by Kraus cut the deficit to
six points, 66-60, with 1:03 on the clock. However, that
would be as close as the Eagles would get as NYU scored its
remaining points from the foul line.
NYU ended the game shooting 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the floor
compared to Emory's 36.5 percent (23-of-63). The Violets
enjoyed a decided edge at the foul line, knocking down 22-of-32
tries while the Eagles hit on eight-of-13.
Emory closes out the season next Saturday, Feb. 28, when it
entertains Case Western Reserve University.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS ROAD GAME AT BRANDEIS
(Feb. 20) - The Emory tandem of senior Lora Turner and junior
LeShonda Lillard combined for 34 points but it wasn't enough as the
Brandeis women's basketball team fought off the Eagles Friday
evening. Brandeis raised its overall record to 16-6 overall,
6-6 in the University Athletic Association following a 67-57
decision over Emory who saw its overall mark fall to 12-11, 3-9 in
the conference.
Turner hit six-of-11 from the floor and five-of nine from the foul
line while Lillard recorded six field goals including three
three-point field goals. Turner led all players with 10
rebounds, her second straight double-double and third of the
season. Senior Jenny Kraus chipped in nine points for
Emory.
Brandeis stretched a five-point halftime lead into an 11-point
cushion, 33-22, with 15:31 remaining in the game before the Eagles
staged numerous comebacks. Emory started with a 12-3 spurt, keyed
by a pair of treys from Kraus, to creep to within two points at
36-34, with 12:06 left. A three-point by play by Turner drew
the Eagles even closer, at 40-39 with 10:52 on the clock. The
Judges responded with seven straight points to assume an
eight-point lead but the Eagles answered with six unanswered points
to trail by a 47-45 margin with 6:20 left. Brandeis held a
slim 56-53 edge before a key three-pointer by Diana Cincotta gave
the home team a six-point advantage with 2:14 remaining.
Following a pair of Emory misses from the foul line, the Judges
scored their remaining eight points from the foul line in securing
the win.
For the game, Emory shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the floor
while Brandeis checked in with an effort of 41.5 percent
(22-of-53). The Judges converted 19-of-28 from the charity
stripe compared to the Eagles' 12-of-19. Jessica Chapin led
the winners with 15 points and eight boards.
Emory was hampered by a slow start, sinking just two of its first
11 field goal opportunities and turning the ball over on eight
occasions in falling behind by an 18-5 margin midway through the
first half. However, the Eagles regrouped and closed out the
opening stanza with a 16-8 run to trail by a 26-21 count at
halftime. Lillard sparked the attack by scoring all eight of
her opening-half points in that stretch. Turner also chipped in
eight points during the first 20 minutes of action. Both
squads endured cold-shooting first halves with Emory hitting just
27.7 percent (8-of-29) from the field compared to the Judges'
effort of 30 percent (9-of-30).
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 22) when it plays at New
York University.

LILLARD A FORCE AT BOTH ENDS OF THE COURT -
After seeing her steals streak snapped at 19 consecutive
games following the Wash U. contest, junior LeShonda
Lillard registered four thefts against Chicago, her 19th
performance of two or more steals this season. In the process, she
moved into second place on the school's seasonal list with 65
steals, behind only Amy Carter's standard of 78 set during the
1994-95 campaign.
Career-wise, Lillard ranks prominently on Emory's career ladder in
steals with her mark of 122 placing her seventh. She is three
shy from tying Christie Howard (1996-200) for the sixth spot.
Among UAA cagers, Lillard is second in steals in overall play (3.1
spg) and second in league contests (2.9 spg).
On the offensive end of the floor, her 11.0 points per game average
is good for the No. 2 spot on the club and 11th among UAA
players. She has scored in double figures on 10 occasions
this year and has 24 career contests of 10 or more points to her
credit.
TURNER TALES - After being held to a season-low
five points in the Washington University game, senior Lora
Turner bounced back with a season-high 25 points along
with 10 rebounds against the University of Chicago, her second
double-double of the year. Turner sank 11-of-17 from the
floor (her third game of 10 or more field goals this year) and
three-of-four from the charity stripe en route to her 20th
double-figure scoring effort of the year and ninth of 20 or more
points. Scoring in double digits is nothing new to the
5-foot-11 Turner as she has totaled 10 or more points in 71 of 96
career contests.
Heading into the weekend, Turner holds down the top spot on the
team with a 16.5 points per-game average, good for the No. 2 spot
on the UAA chart. In conference games, she is tossing in 16.3
points, also good for second place. Lora has converted 50
percent or better from the field in 16 games and her 59.1 percent
mark from the floor paces both the club and the UAA.
Turner, the owner of 17 performances of 20 or more points during
her Emory tenure, has produced a career total of 1,256 points
heading into this weekend, good for fourth place on the school's
all-time list. In addition, her 587 career rebounds is good
for the No. 9 spot on the Eagles' all-time chart.
NOTES - Senior Kerry
Madison totaled a career-high 18 points in the Wash U.
game, her first double-figure scoring effort of the season and
third of her career ... Madison sank six-of-seven from the
floor, including both of her three-point attempts, and all four of
her free throw opportunities against the Bears ... The Eagles have
13 games of double-digit steals this season and rank No. 2 among
UAA teams in that department (10.6 spg) ... Emory has a team total
of 233 steals this season, the eighth-highest mark in school
history ... Senior Kendall Boyd resides in 10th
place on Emory's career ladder with 67 three-point field goals ...
Emory has outshot 10 opponents from the floor and are 9-1 in those
affairs ... The Eagles stand 10-4 when turning the ball over on
fewer occasions than their opponents ... Junior Whitney
Martin is averaging a team-high 6.5 rebounds per contest,
good for sixth place among UAA players ... Martin has snatched six
or more rebounds in 14 contests this year and has either led or
shared for team honors in that department on 10 occasions in '08-09
... Freshman Melissa Koike registered 12 minutes
of action, her second-longest outing of the year, and came up with
a season-high six points in the Chicago contest ... Emory has
outrebounded foes in seven games this season and owns a 7-0 mark in
those contests ...The Eagles are 13-0 during Thomaskutty's tenure
as head coach when scoring 80 or more points ... In overall games,
Emory is No. 2 in the UAA in scoring offense (71.1 ppg) No. 3 in

After missing the Rochester game with an injury, junior
LeShonda Lillard made her presence felt in the
Carnegie Mellon game as she came off the bench to score 17 points,
tying her second highest total of the season, while racking
up a personal high of seven steals, her 18th outing of two or more
thefts in 19 games this year. Her seven steals tied for the
fourth highest single-game mark in school history and upped her
season total to 61, good for the No. 4 spot on the Eagles' seasonal
ladder.
Lillard ranks prominently on Emory's career ladder in that
department with her 118 steals placing her eighth. She is two
from tying Allison Reopel (1999-01, 02-03) for seventh place and
seven from tying Christie Howard (1996-200) for the sixth spot.
Among UAA cagers, Lillard is second in steals in overall play (3.2
spg) and third in league contests (3.1 spg).
On the offensive end of the floor, her 11.2 points per game average
is good for the No. 2 spot on the club and 11th among UAA
players. She has scored in double figures on 10 occasions

5-foot-11 Turner sank 20-of-26 from the floor (.769) and in the
process raised her field goal shooting to 59.1 percent, tops among
UAA cagers. Turner has been a model of consistency all
season, posting double-figure scoring in 19 outings and racking up
eight efforts of 20 or more points. During her career,
she has double-digit point production in 70 of 94 contests.
Turner holds down the top spot on the team with a 16.7 points
per-game average, good for the No. 2 spot on the UAA chart.
In conference games, she is tossing in 16.6 points, also good for
second place. Lora has converted 50 percent or better from
the field in 15 games and is knocking down 61.1 percent (33-of-54)
of her attempts in the last four contests.
Turner, the owner of 16 performances of 20 or more points during
her Emory tenure, has produced a career total of 1,226 points
heading into this weekend, good for fourth place on the school 's
all-time list. NOTES - Emory's 80-65 win over Carnegie Mellon
raised Coach Thomaskutty's record to 13-0 when scoring 80 or more
points in a game (6-0 in '08-09) ... Junior Keenan
Whitesides gave the team a boost off the bench against
Rochester with 12 points, her second-highest career total, three
boards and two blocked shots in 15 minutes of play ... Whitesides
has scored in 15 of 19 appearances this season ... Emory finished
the Carnegie Mellon contest with 19 steals, tying the school's

against Carnegie Mellon, her second performance of double-figure
scoring this season ... Junior Whitney Martin
averaged 6.0 rebounds in the two games over the weekend and still
stands first on the club with a 6.7 per-game mark, good for sixth
place among UAA players ... Martin has snatched six or more
rebounds in 14 contests this year ... Emory has turned the ball
over more than the opposition in just five games (0-5) this season
... The Eagles stand 10-3 when turning the ball over on fewer
occasions than their opponents ... Emory has outshot 10 opponents
from the floor and are 9-1 in those affairs ... Emory has
outrebounded foes in seven games this season and owns a 7-0 mark in
those contests ... The Eagles are tossing in 79.1 points and
shooting 45.0 percent from the field in their 12 wins while
averaging 62.4 points and 39.0 percent from the floor in the eight

EMORY'S LORA TURNER NAMED UAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF
THE WEEK
(Feb. 9) - Emory University senior Lora
Turner (Florence, AL) has been selected by the University
Athletic Association as Women's Basketball Player of the Week
following her efforts in a pair of road games. It marks
the first time this season and second time in her career that she
has won the award.
The 5-foot-11 Turner averaged 22.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in
contests at No. 3 Rochester and Carnegie Mellon. In an 80-72
setback to Rochester, she totaled a team-best 21 points, hitting
10-of-13 from the field and her only free throw attempt. In
addition, she paced the team with nine boards. In Sunday's
80-65 decision over Carnegie Mellon, she notched a season-high 24
points, again sinking 10-of-13 from the floor and four-of-six from
the charity stripe while snaring nine caroms. In the two
games, she converted 76.9 percent from the floor (20-of-26) and
71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the foul line.
Her back-to-back efforts of 20 or more points give her 19
double-figure scoring performances this season and eight of 20 or
more points. Turner is averaging a team-high 16.7 points per
outing, good for the No. 2 spot among UAA players, and her 6.1
per-game effort in rebounding ranks her second on the squad.
She has either led or shared for team scoring honors on 15
occasions this season and has paced the club in rebounding in nine
contests.
Emory, 12-8 overall and 3-6 in conference outings, hosts Washington
University on Friday (Feb. 13) and the University of Chicago on
Sunday (Feb. 15).
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM CAPTURES ROAD WIN AT CARNEGIE
MELLON
(Feb. 8) - Senior Lora Turner tallied a season-high 24 points
in sparking the Emory women's basketball team to a win at Carnegie
Mellon. The Eagles increased their overall record to 12-8,
3-6 in the University Athletic Association, following an 80-65 win
over the Tartans who fell to 5-15 in overall play, 0-8 in the
league.
Turner was dominant throughout the afternoon, sinking 10-of-13 from
the floor and four-of-six from the free throw line in
notching her 19th double-figure scoring performance of the year and
eighth of 20 or more points. Turner had plenty of help in the
win with junior LeShonda Lillard picking up 17 points along with a
career-high seven steals, tying for the fourth-highest single-game
mark in school history. Sophomore Courtney Von Stein rounded
out the team's double-figure scorers with a career-high 12
points.
Emory finished the contest shooting 44.4 percent from the floor
(28-of-63) while the Tartans posted a 46.4 percent (26-of-56)
mark. The Eagles converted 17-of-24 from the charity stripe
compared to CMU's 10-of-19. Though Emory was outrebounded by
a 39-34 margin, it offset that statistic by turning 28 Tartan
turnovers into 45 points.
With Turner and Lillard scoring 14 and eight points, respectively,
in the first half, the Eagles enjoyed a 41-34 lead at
intermission. Emory built a pair of 17-point leads during the
opening 20 minutes of play before CMU battled back to within seven
at the break.
After a basket by Jacki Cortese of CMU cut Emory's lead to three
points early in the second half, the Eagles responded with a 9-0
spurt, keyed by a pair of buckets by Turner along with a
three-point field goal by senior Kendall Boyd, to reclaim control
of the game, 54-42, with 13:34 left. From there, the closest
Carnegie Mellon would get was seven points.
Emory returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13, when it hosts
Washington University in a 6:00 p.m. start.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS SHORT AT NO. 3 ROCHESTER
(Feb. 6) - Emory senior Lora Turner scored a team-high 21 points
and grabbed nine rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Eagles
dropped an intense battle to No. 3 Rochester Friday evening.
Emory saw its overall record fall to 11-8 in overall action, 2-6 in
the University Athletic Association following an 80-72 setback to
the Yellowjackets who upped their overall slate to 18-1, 7-1 in the
league.
Rochester had its hands full with a determined visiting Emory squad
and had to rally from a nine-point deficit in the second half in
securing the victory. The Yellowjackets used a 10-2 scoring
run over the final two minutes of the contest in finally putting
some distance between themselves and the scrappy Eagles.
Turner sank 10-of-13 from the field in registering her 18th
double-figure scoring effort of the season for the Eagles and
seventh of 20 or more points. Sophomore Keenan Whitesides
came off the bench and contributed 12 points, her second-highest
total of the year.
After battling to a 37-32 lead at halftime, the Eagles moved ahead
by a 41-32 margin early in the second half following baskets by
Turner and senior Kerry Madison. Emory still held a
five-point edge with 14:38 remaining following a score by freshman
Sally Peterson, only to see UR rattle off a 13-3 charge, keyed by
back-to-back three-point field goals by Melissa Alwardt, to lay
claim to a 55-50 lead with 10:52 on the clock. The Eagles
regained momentum and a trey by Whitesides, her first of the year,
culminated a 10-2 spurt that put the visitors ahead by a 60-57
count with 6:53 remaining. A three-pointer by Madison with
3:50 on the clock kept Emory in front, 67-65, with 3:50 left.
Rochester came back to take a 70-67 lead before a three-point play
by Turner with 2:03 left knotted the affair. However, a
bucket by Alwardt with 1:45 left put the Yellowjackets ahead for
good. Alex Porter led UR with 17 points and 16 rebounds while
Alwardt totaled 14 points.
Emory hit 45 percent from the floor (31-of-69) compared to
Rochester's 42 percent (27-of-64). The Yellowjackets finished
with a 42-37 edge in rebounding
The Eagles, playing without the services of starting point guard
LeShonda Lillard, turned in a solid first half, holding the
Yellowjackets to 39 percent from the floor (13-of-33) while
converting 43 percent of their attempts (16-of-37). Emory got
out of the blocks quickly, scoring the game's first six points, but
Rochester regrouped and held a 26-20 edge with 5:36 left.
However, the Eagles came through with a 17-6 flurry over the
remainder of the stanza to lay claim to a five-point advantage at
intermission. Turner accounted for 12 first-half points and
six rebounds to pace Emory's attack while junior Mary Smith chipped
in seven points. It represented just the third time this
season that the Yellowjackets faced a deficit after the opening
half of action.Emory returns to action on Sunday when it plays at
Carnegie Mellon University. EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FACE ROAD TESTS

Rochester never trailed in the game and lead by as many as 11
points in the first half before taking a 31-24 lead into the locker
room at halftime. Turner helped keep the Eagles within
striking distance by scoring 11 points during the opening 20
minutes of action.
The Yellowjackets got out of gate quickly in the early stages of
the second half with Porter and Jessica Mastronardi each scoring
five points in a 10-0 run that stretched the visitor's lead to
41-24 with 16:51 remaining. UR eventually built a 20-point
cushion shortly thereafter and the closest the Eagles would get
would be 13 points on four occasions.
Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 6) when it plays at
Rochester in a 6:00 p.m. start.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS CARNEGIE MELLON
(Jan. 30) - Lora Turner totaled a game-high 19
points and junior Whitney Martin added a season-high 14
points along with a game-best nine rebounds in sparking the Emory
women's basketball team to a win over Carnegie Mellon Friday
evening. The Eagles increased their record to 11-6 overall,
2-4 in the University Athletic Association with a 78-73 decision
over the Tartans who slumped to 5-12 in overall action, 0-6 in the
league.
Turner sank eight-of-15 from the floor and all three of her free
throw opportunities en route to her 15th double-figure scoring
performance of the campaign. Martin was successful on
five-of-eight from the field and converted all four of her
opportunities from the charity stripe in registering her third
outing of 10 or more points. Junior LeShonda Lillard rounded
out Emory's double-figure scorers with 12 points while chipping in
four assists and two steals.
CMU actually outshot Emory from the floor, hitting 46.9 percent
(30-of-64), to 46.8 percent (29-of-62). However, the Eagles
enjoyed a decided advantage at the foul line with 16 makes in 23
attempts compared to visitor's showing of 9-of-13.
Behind 11 points by Martin and 10 by Turner, Emory raced out to a
44-33 lead at halftime. Both squads shot the ball well during
the opening 20 minutes of action with the Eagles sinking 51.4
percent (18-of-35) from the field and CMU 50 percent
(15-of-30). Emory held a 22-14 edge with 11:22 left in the
opening stanza before staging a 12-0 spurt, keyed by Martin's six
points, to take a 34-14 advantage with 7:28 remaining. The
Tartans stayed within striking distance thanks to a 6-0 run over
the last 1:05 of the stanza.
In the second half, Emory held 18-point leads on three occasions,
the last coming with 6:54 on the clock following a basket by
Lillard. A pair of foul shots by Turner with 1:00 left gave
the Eagles a 13-point edge, 74-61. The Tartans then closed
out the game against Emory reserves with a 12-5 charge that
accounted for the game's final margin.
Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 1) when it hosts No.
5-ranked Rochester in a 2:00 p.m. start.

HOME SWEET HOME - The Eagles start the weekend
with a 8-1 home record and average 77.3 points per game at the
Woodruff PE Center while holding opponents to 59.0 points.
The Eagles have converted 43.8 percent of their field goal
opportunities compared to 34.6 percent for the
opposition.
LILLARD KEEPS STEALS STREAK INTACT - Junior
LeShoda Lillard finished the Brandeis game with
one steal, snapping her streak of registering two or more thefts at
15 games. Despite seeing that streak come to an end, Lillard
still ranks as the team's top performer in that category and is
tied for the No. 2 spot among UAA players with a 3.1 per-game
average. Her 49 steals ties for 10th place on Emory's
seasonal ladder. Career-wise, Lillard has picked the pocket
of opponents 106 times, good for a 10th-place tie with Mekisha
Parks (1998-2002) on Emory's career chart.
TURNER BACK ON SCORING TRACK - After seeing a
13-game double-figure scoring snapped at Washington University
(Jan. 18), senior Lora Turner responded with a
team-high 20 points at New York University before tallying 14
against Brandeis. Turner has chalked up double-digit point
production on 15 occasions this season and in 66 of 90 career
outings.
Turner holds down the top spot on the team with a 16.0 points
per-game average, good for the No. 2 spot on the UAA chart.
The 5-foot-11 Turner stands second among UAA players with a keen
58.6 percent (106-of-181) showing from the floor. She has
converted 50 percent or better from the field in 12 games and is
knocking down 64.3 percent (18-of-20) of her attempts in the last
three games.
Lora has chalked up six performances of 20 or more points this
season (14 during her career). In the Maryville game on Dec.
6, she became the seventh player in school history to reach 1,000
career points and takes 1,149 points into the Carnegie Mellon
game, fifth on Emory's all-time list.
NOTES - Lillard's 14 free throws in the Brandeis
represented the second-high individual game total in school history
behind only Lora Turner's standard of 15 ... Junior Whitney
Martin tied Turner for team honors with eight rebounds
against NYU before snatching a team-best eight boards in the
Brandeis contest ... Martin is averaging a club-leading 6.5
rebounds per game, good for the No. 7 spot on the UAA ladder, and
has either led or shared for the team's lead in that department in
eight games this season ... Brandeis shot 29.9 percent (20-of-67)
from the floor against Emory, the fourth time this year that the
Eagles limited an opponent to less than 30 percent from the field
... It also represented the lowest field goal percentage mark by an
UAA opponent since Feb. 17, 2006 when Carnegie hit just 27.4
percent ... Sophomore Courtney Von Stein's
21-minute stint against Brandeis was the fifth time this season
where she logged 20 or minutes of playing time ... In the Brandeis
game, the Eagles shot 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from three-point range
compared to the Judges' effort of 23.5 percent, snapping a
five-game streak where the opposition had outshot Emory from beyond
the arc ... Lillard ranks as the team leader and stands second
among UAA players in assists (4.1 apg), and has led for shared for
squad honors in that statistic in 11 contests this year ... The
Eagles are tossing in 79.1 points and shooting 44.9 percent from
the field in their 10 wins while averaging 63.0 points and 38.8
percent from the floor in the six setbacks ... Emory has 10 games
of 10 or more steals this year and stands tied for the No. 2
position in the UAA in that department (10.8 spg) ... The Eagles
have outshot nine opponents from the floor and are 9-0 those
affairs ... Emory has outrebounded foes in seven games this season
and owns a 7-0 mark in those contests.

EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM UPENDS NO. 12 BRANDEIS
(Jan. 25) - Emory University LeShonda Lillard
recorded a career-high 26 points and sparked the team's eighth win
at home in nine outings this afternoon as the Eagles defeated No.
12-ranked Brandeis University. Emory boosted its record to
10-6 (1-4 in the University Athletic Association) following a 69-56
win over the Judges who slipped to 12-3 overall, 2-3 in the
league.
Emory never trailed in the contest and wound up shooting 46.0
percent from the floor (23-of-50) while holding the Judges to 29.9
percent (20-of-67). The Eagles hit 36.8 percent (7-of-19)
from three-point range compared to 23.5 percent (4-of-17) for
Brandeis.
Emory held a 20-14 lead with 9:14 remaining in the first half
before churning out a 9-2 run over the next five minutes that put
it ahead by 29-16 count. Eventually, the Eagles went into the
locker room with a 33-24 advantage at halftime, thanks in part to
some keen shooting that saw them nail 55.6 percent of their field
goal tries (15-of-27).
Brandeis scored the first five points of the second half to draw to
33-29, but Emory rattled off a 12-0 burst on the strength of a pair
of three-point field goals by junior Mary Smith, along treys by
junior Whitney Martin and freshman Courtney Von Stein, to bolt out
to a 45-29 bulge with 13:56 left. From that point Lillard
scored 16 of the team's final 24 points, sinking 14-of-15 from the
charity stripe in that stretch. Brandeis crept back into the
game with 4:02 remaining when a pair of free throws by Jessica
Chapin narrowed Emory's lead to 55-49. But four free throws
by Lillard, sandwiched by a basket by senior Lora Turner, pushed
the Eagles lead back to 12 points with 1:49 left. Turner
finished the afternoon with 14 points, her 15th double-figure
scoring performance of the year.
Juniors Kasey Gieschen and Jessica Chapin shared for Brandeis
scoring honors with 10 points apiece.
Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 30) when it entertains
Carnegie Mellon in a 6:00 p.m. start.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SQUAD COMES UP SHORT AGAINST NO.
11 NYU
(Jan. 23) - The Emory women's basketball team
staged a determined rally from a 16-point second-half deficit but
fell short in its bid to upend No. 11-ranked New York University of
Friday. The Eagles saw their overall record fall to 9-6 (0-4
University Athletic Association) following a 66-59 setback to the
Violets who boosted their overall mark to 14-1, 3-1 in the UAA.
Emory finished the game shooting 33.3 percent from the floor while
NYU finished with a mark of 37.9 percent (22-of-58). The
Eagles struggled from three-point territory, sinking just 1-of-21
opportunities compared to NYU's showing of 5-of-15. The
Violets concluded the contest with a 48-42 edge in rebounding.
Facing a 42-26 obstacle in the second half, Emory staged an 11-4
rally, keyed by four points from senior Lora Turner and a
three-pointer by freshman Sally Peterson, that drew it to within
nine points with 13:31 remaining in the contest. After
falling behind by 14 points, Emory battled back to within eight
following a basket by Turner with 8:14 on the clock. The
Violets kept Emory at arm's length and held an 11-point cushion
with 2:02 left before the Eagles made one last run with a 6-0
charge that cut the gap to five points, 64-59, with 53 ticks
remaining. However, that was as close as Emory would get as it
suffered its first home setback in eight outings.
Senior Lora Turner paced the Emory scoring attack with 20 points,
her 14th double-figure effort of the season and sixth of 20 or more
points. Turner sank eight-of-12 from the floor and
four-of-six from the free throw line. Junior LeShonda Lillard
was the other Eagle to notch double digits in scoring with 10
points. Turner, along with junior Whitney Martin tied for
team honors with eight rebounds.
Senior Jessica McEntee led all players with 26 points and snagged
nine boards. Junior Grace Carmen chipped in 11 points and
senior Megan Fox aided in the win with 12 rebounds.
NYU held a 37-22 lead after the opening 20 minutes of action as it
used a 17-3 sprint that turned a 14-14 game into a 31-17 advantage
with 3:24 left in the opening stanza. Emory connected on just
24.2 percent in the first half of play and was hampered by 12
turnovers that NYU turned into 18 points.
Emory returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 25, when it hosts No. 12
Brandeis starting at 2:00 p.m. EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM RETURNS HOME TO

KRAUS SHINES IN CHICAGO GAME - Senior
Jenny Kraus turned in a big effort at Chicago,
leading the club in scoring with a career-high 23 points.
Kraus hit six-of-10 from the floor, including four three-point
field goals, and seven free throw opportunities en route to her
first performance of 20 or more points. It was the second
time this year that she finished as the team's top scorer with her
14 points at Piedmont representing the other occasion. She
has chalked up seven games of double-figure scoring during the
2008-09 campaign.
LILLARD KEEPS STEALS STREAK INTACT - Junior
LeShoda Lillard recorded five steals against
Chicago before registering pair of thefts at Washington
University. Lillard has two or more steals in all 14 games
this year and her team-high total of 46 ranks her second among UAA
players (3.3 spg). Lillard reached the 100 career-steals mark
in the UC affair and checks into this weekend's action in 12th
place on the school's all-time chart with 103. She is one shy
of tying Ashley Gordon's (1991-93, '94-95) 11th-place mark of 104
and three shy of tying Mekisha Parks' (1998-2002) for 10th
place.
TURNER SEES DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORING STREAK END -
Senior Lora Turner finished the Wash U., game with
eight points, snapping her double-figure scoring streak at 13
games. Despite being saddled with single-digit scoring for
the first time this year, Turner still holds down the top spot on
the team with a 15.9 points per-game average, good for the No. 2
spot on the UAA chart. The 5-foot-11 Turner also ranks as the
league leader with a glittering 57.5 percent (92-of-160) showing
from the floor. She has converted 50 percent or better from
the field in 10 games.
Lora has chalked up five performances of 20 or more points this
season (13 during her career) and has notched 10 or more points in
64 of 88 career contests.
In the Maryville game on Dec. 6, she became the seventh player in
school history to reach 1,000 career points and takes 1,115 points
into the NYU game, sixth on Emory's all-time list and just two
points shy of tying Beth Bergmann (2003-07) for fifth place.
NOTES - Lillard paces the team and ranks
second among UAA cagers in assists (4.2 apg) ... Lillard has led or
shared for team honors in that category in 10 contests this year
... The Eagles are tossing in 80.2 points and shooting 44.8 percent
from the field in their nine wins while averaging 63.8 points and
40.1 percent from the floor in the five setbacks ... Emory has 10
games of 10 or more steals this year and stands as the No. 1 team
in the UAA in that department (11.5 spg) ... The Eagles have
outshot eight opponents from the floor and are 8-0 those affairs
... Emory has outrebounded foes in seven games this season and owns
a 7-0 mark in those contests ... Junior Whitney
Martin stands eighth among UAA players in rebounding (6.3

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
(Jan. 18) - The Emory University women's basketball team fell
victim to a torrid second-half shooting performance by Washington
University Sunday as the Bears pulled away for a 77-50 triumph in
Saint Louis. The loss dropped Emory's overall record to 9-5
(0-3 UAA) while the 20th-ranked Wash U. squad boosted its overall
slate to 11-3 (3-0 UAA).
Emory shot 33.3 percent from the floor (21-of-63) while the hosts
posted a 48.6 percent showing (34-of-70) including a 57.5 percent

Emory while seniors Lora Turner and Kendall Boyd each contributed
eight points. Turner, along with sophomore Keenan Whitesides,

After trailing by a 36-26 margin at halftime, the Eagles drew to

three-point field goal by senior Kerry Madison. However, Wash
U. countered with a decisive 15-3 run over the next minutes to
extend its lead to 57-37. The closest Emory would get from
that point was 13 points with 7:44 left in the game.
In a fast-paced first half, the Bears had nine players score en
route to its halftime lead. Emory shot 34.4 percent (11-of-32) from
the floor during the opening 20 minutes of action and was led by

and senior Alex Leach with 14 points.
The Eagles ended the game shooting 36.1 percent from the floor
(22-of-61) while the host Maroons were successful on 50.9 percent

the foul line where it could only sink 15-of-31 opportunities.
Despite shooting just 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from the floor while
seeing the Maroons connect at a 48.3 percent clip, and holding a
27-12 edge in rebounding, the Eagles trailed by just a 36-30 margin
at halftime. Kraus kept Emory within striking distance with 12
points, hitting four-of-six from the floor, including three-of-five
from beyond the arc. Chicago built its largest lead during
the opening 20 minutes at 35-22 with 2:48 remaining in the stanza
before the Eagles closed out the half with an 8-1 spurt, keyed by

No. 25 EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS AGNES
SCOTT
(Jan.5) - Emory senior Lora Turner scored a game-high 21 points,
her 10th straight double-figure scoring effort, and the Eagles
turned in a solid defensive effort in recording a win at home
Monday evening against Agnes Scott College. Emory ran its
record to 8-2 following an 85-45 triumph over the Scotties who
slumped to 4-5.
Turner hit nine-of-15 from the floor and three-of-four from the
line in helping the Eagles raise their home mark to 6-0 this
season. Senior Jenny Kraus aided in the win by totaling 12 points
along with a season-high tying seven rebounds. Senior Kerry
Madison added nine points and a season-best 10 boards that paced
all players in the game.
Emory concluded the game shooting 45.1 percent (32-of-71) compared
to Agnes Scott's mark of 22.7 percent (10-of-44). The Eagles
knocked down 50 percent from three-point range (9-of-18) and were
led by Madison's three treys. Emory posted a 45-31 edge in
rebounding. A swarming Eagles' defense forced 32 ASC miscues which
the Eagles generated into 26 points.
Emory scored 12 of the game's first 13 points and held the Scotties
to without a field goal for the first 6:15 of the game. Holding a
16-6 edge with 11:16 remaining in the stanza, the Eagles put a
stranglehold on the contest with a 16-4 burst that gave them a
32-10 cushion with 5:53 remaining. Emory held ASC to just
four field goals during the opening 20 minutes of play in claiming
a 45-23 advantage at halftime.
Emory kept the pressure up in the second half, using a 20-6 attack
in the first 6:17 to lay claim to a 64-29 lead. The Eagles
spread the scoring around in the lethal spurt with six players
finding their way into the scoring column. By the time the
evening had ended, all 15 Emory players saw action with 12
registering points.
Emory returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 10) when it opens
University Athletic Association action at Case Western.
No. 25 EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL RACES BY HUNTINGDON
COLLEGE
(Jan. 3) - Emory senior Lora Turner scored 14 points to lead three
double-figure scorers and the Eagles used a big second half in
registering a win against Huntingdon College Saturday
afternoon. Emory snapped a two-game losing streak and raised
its record to 7-2 following an 86-53 triumph over the Hawks who saw
their won-lost ledger slip to 3-5.
Turner's 14 points represented her eighth double-digit scoring
effort of the season and she was complimented by junior LeShonda
Lillard and senior Kendall Boyd who chipped in 12 and 10 points,
respectively. Emory shot 42.9 percent from the floor
(33-of-77) while holding Huntingdon to 33.3 percent (18-of-54), the
second-lowest effort by an opponent this year. The Eagles
finished with a 47-40 edge in rebounding and were paced in the
category by Turner's nine boards. Emory used a swarming
defense throughout the afternoon that forced 34 Huntingdon
turnovers which the Eagles generated into 33 points.
Emory never trailed in the contest and bolted to 34-17 lead with
5:07 left in the first half before the Hawks closed out the stanza
with an 8-3 run that narrowed the gap 37-25 at halftime.
After the visitors scored the first point of the second half, the
Eagles blew the game wide open with a 19-2 charge that put them up
by a 56-28 margin with 14:28 on the clock. Boyd nailed three
three-pointers in the barrage en route to picking up 10 points
while four other players scored in that stretch. Emory
eventually built a 37-point advantage on two occasions during the
waning minutes of the game as it ran its home record to 5-0 this
year. The Eagles outscored the Hawks by a 49-28 margin during
the final 20 minutes of play.
Emory returns to action on Monday (Jan. 5) when it plays host to
Agnes Scott in a 6:00 p.m. tip.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT BIRMINGHAM
SOUTHERN
(Dec. 30) - The Emory women's basketball team ran into a
hot-shooting Birmingham Southern squad on Tuesday afternoon and
closed out the 2008 portion of its season with a loss on the
Panthers' home court. Emory saw its record slip to 6-2
following the 93-76 to BSC which notched its fifth straight victory
in upping its won-lost slate to 8-2.
Both teams shot the ball well from the floor with the Panthers
finishing with a slight edge in that department, 49.2 percent
(29-of-59) to 48.3 percent (29-of-60). The Eagles and Panthers were
solid from three-point range as well with Emory knocking down 45.0
percent (9-of-20) from distance while BSC converted 47.8 percent
(11-of-23). The Panthers made the most of their free throw
attempts, draining 24-of-27 compared to the Eagles'
nine-of-14. Birmingham Southern also concluded the contest
with a 40-27 advantage in the rebounding department.
The first half was a game of spurts for both clubs. Emory
held an 18-11 margin before BSC countered with a 10-0 streak that
put it up by three points with 9:44 remaining. The Eagles
fought back and when Kendall Boyd nailed a jumper with 7:58 on the
clock, the Eagles went back ahead, 25-23. However, the
Panthers answered with a 17-3 sprint that enabled it to assume a
40-28 margin with 2:27 left on the clock. Undaunted, the
Eagles bounced back with an 8-0 charge that was capped when another
bucket by Boyd narrowed the gap to 40-36. The Panthers
stemmed the Emory charge when a three-pointer by Erin Jackson at
the buzzer gave the hosts a 43-36 lead at halftime. Boyd
paced the team's scoring attack during the opening 20 minutes with
11 points while junior Keenan Whitesides came off the bench to
contribute six. Emory was successful on 50 percent of its
field goal attempts (13-of-26) in the half but was outrebounded by
a 22-14 margin with the Panthers grabbing 11 offensive boards that
led to 13 second-chance points.
In the final half of action, Emory had to battle back from
double-digit deficits for the majority of the stanza. A
three-pointer by Jackson gave the Panthers their biggest lead at
that stage of the contest, 64-49 with 13:15 left, before a couple
of baskets by senior Lora Turner and a bucket by classmate Jenny
Kraus trimmed the gap to 64-55. BSC went ahead by 13 points
on four occasions before back-to-back three-pointers by Boyd and
Kraus gave the Eagles new life, down seven points (76-69) with 3:49
on the clock. But the rally would end there as the Panthers
hit 11-of-12 from the foul line over the next three minutes to fend
off the Eagles.
Turner, despite being hampered by foul trouble and logging just 19
minutes of action, led a trio of Emory double-figure scorers with
16 points, dropping in seven-of-eight from the floor and both of
her charity tosses. Boyd came through with her third
double-digit contest of the season with 14 points while Kraus
picked up all 11 of her points in the second half.
Emory returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 3) when it plays host to
Huntingdon College.

EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM RANKED 23rd IN
D3HOOPS.COM POLL
(Dec. 9) - The Emory women's basketball team holds down the No. 23
position in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. It marks the
first time that program has been ranked among the nation's top 25
Division III squads by that poll since it began during the
1999-2000 season.
Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty and the Eagles stand 6-1 through
seven contests. Last week, Emory defeated No. 2-ranked
Oglethorpe, 85-84, at home before suffering its initial defeat of
the season, 65-60, at Maryville last Saturday.
Emory is off until Dec. 30 when it will play at Birmingham Southern
in a 2:00 p.m. (CST) start.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FALLS AT MARYVILLE -
TURNER REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINT MARK
(Dec. 6) - Emory senior Lora Turner scored 15 points and grabbed
eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Eagles suffered their
first defeat of the season after dropping a road game to Maryville
College. Emory saw its record slip to 6-1 following a 65-60
setback to the Lady Scots who upped their mark to 3-4.
Turner hit seven-of-12 from the floor en route to her sixth
double-figure scoring effort of the campaign. Junior LeShonda
Lillard chipped in 13 points and two steals while junior Mary Smith
totaled eight points. The Eagles finished the game sinking
42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor while Maryville posted a
52.3 percent mark (23-of-44). The Scots held a slight 29-26
edge on the boards and hit 12-of-16 from the free throw line
compared to three-of-four for Emory.
With Lillard and Smith each scoring eight points, the Eagles
trailed by a 34-33 margin after the opening half of action.
In the second stanza, Emory hit just two of its first nine shots
from the floor and turned the ball over on four occasions as
Maryville ran off an 18-4 run to put it in front by a 52-37 count
with 13 minutes remaining. The Lady Scots hit all six of
their field goal attempts in that stretch including three
three-point field goals.
Maryville enjoyed a 57-46 cushion with 6:51 left on the clock
before the Eagles responded with a 14-4 burst that culminating with
a basket by senior Jenny Kraus with 55 seconds remaining that drew
them to within 61-60. Following a pair of charity tosses by
Maryville, Emory looked to tie the game but was stymied after it
turned the ball over with 19 seconds left. The Scots closed
the game's scoring with two more free throws six seconds later.
A highlight for Emory came in the second half when Turner became
the seventh player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a
career. Turner entered the contest with 991 points and her
production today moved her to 1,006 points.
Emory returns to action on Dec. 30 when it plays at Birmingham
Southern.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM UPENDS NO. 2-RANKED
OGLETHORPE - RUNS RECORD TO 6-0
(Dec. 2) - The Emory women's basketball team came
away with a win against the highest-ranked opponent during head
Coach Christy Thomaskutty's six-year tenure on Tuesday evening as
it topped No. 2-ranked Oglethorpe University. The Eagles ran
their season record to 6-0 following a thrilling 85-84 win over the
Petrels who suffered their first setback in five outings.
Senior Lora Turner totaled a team-high 20 points to lead five Emory
double-figure scorers, hitting six-of-11 from the floor and
eight-of-10 from the charity stripe in chalking up her third
20-point contest of the season. Junior Mary Smith turned in a
big performance with a season-best 17 points while tying classmate
Whitney Martin for team honors with seven rebounds. Junior
guard LeShonda Lillard scored all of her 12 points during the
second half of play while Martin (11 pts.) and senior Jenny Kraus
(10 pts.) rounded out the club's double-digit scorers.
Emory shot 47.5 percent from the field (29-of-61) while Oglethorpe
connected at a 43.1 percent clip (25-of-58). While the
Petrels enjoyed the edge in three-point shooting, knocking down
seven-of-19 compared to Emory's three-of-16, the Eagles countered
with keen shooting from the charity stripe, converting a
season-best 85.7 percent (24-of-28) of their opportunities.
Oglethorpe led for the majority of the opening half including a
35-29 edge with 4:05 remaining in the stanza before the Eagles cut
the gap to 37-36 heading into the intermission. Smith scored
nine points to lead the offensive attack while Turner contributed
seven.
Emory scored the game's first eight points of the second half, with
Turner picking up a couple of baskets and Lillard and Smith scoring
two points apiece, to go up by a 44-37 count with 17:47
remaining. Emory led, 49-43, following a pair of free throws
by Lillard with 15:38 left, but Oglethorpe responded with a 9-0 run
to assume a 54-51 advantage with 12:05 on the clock. A
three-pointer by Kendall Boyd knotted the game up but the visiting
Oglethorpe squad posted another six-point lead with 9:38 left
following a pair of free throws by Anna Findley.
Martin scored six straight points for Emory in a 1:15 span with her
last two in that stretch tying the see-saw game at 66-66. A free
throw by Smith tied contest for the 10th time at 70-70 with 5:25
remaining. A basket by Lillard following her steal enabled
Emory to reclaim the lead at 72-70 but Oglethorpe managed to fight
back to take a 77-74 edge with 3:45 left. The Eagles then
made the most of three Petrel miscues and used a key 8-0 run (four
points apiece by Turner and Lillard) over a two-minute span to lay
claim to 82-77 margin. Boyd calmly sank a pair of free throws
with seven ticks left to push Emory's lead to 85-81.
Following a three-pointer by OU's Katie Kulavic with 1.5 seconds
left, the Eagles survived a last-ditch effort by Oglethorpe and
emerge with the win.
Emory returns to action on Saturday, December 6, when it plays at
Maryville College in a 2:00 p.m. start.

Eagles' reserves totaled 30 points and 18 rebounds before posting
27 points and 11 boards at LaGrange. Senior Jenny Kraus has

the second half, knocking down four-of-six from the field,
including three-of-five from beyond the arc, over the final 20
minutes of play.
TURNER MOVES UP THE SCORING CHART - Lora Turner's
20-point evening at LaGrange enabled her to move into seventh place
on the school's all-time scoring ladder. Turner now has 925
points to her credit and moved ahead of Cathy Goodgame's (1988-91)
total of 922 points. She now has scored in double figures in
53 of 76 career contests and has produced nine contests of 20 or
more points.
MARTIN NOTCHES FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE - Junior
forward Whitney Martin recorded her first double-double against
Sewanee with a 10-point, career-high 11 rebound performance in the
71-46 win. Martin sank four-of-six from the floor and
two-of-three from the charity stripe en route to her sixth career

Tournament, the Eagles will play at Piedmont College on Tuesday,
Nov. 25 in a 6:00 p.m. start.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL POSTS WIN AT LaGRANGE
(Nov. 18) - The Emory women's basketball earned a win
first in its first road game of the season Tuesday evening at
LaGrange College, boosting its record to 2-0 following an 80-67
decision over the Panthers.
Senior Lora Turner paced four Emory double-figure scorers with 20
points, hitting nine-of-10 from the floor, while grabbing six
rebounds. Junior guard LeShonda Lillard aided in the victory,
totaling 17 points, four assists and two steals while senior Jenny
Kraus came off the bench to pick up 13 points, 11 in the second
half. Junior Mary Smith rounded out the quartet of
double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Behind Lillard's nine points and Turner's seven, the Eagles took a
37-30 lead into halftime. Early in the second half, LaGrange had
cut the deficit to 39-35 before the Eagles used a 20-4 burst, keyed
by eight points by Kraus and five from Lillard, to bolt to a 59-39
lead with 12:03 remaining. Emory shot 60.7 percent from the
floor (17-of-28) during the final 20 minutes of action and
concluded the contest by hitting on 46.2 percent
(30-of-65).
Emory finished the game with a 47-37 edge in rebounding and was led
in that department by junior Whitney Martin who grabbed seven
boards.
The Eagles return to action on Friday (Nov. 21) at 6:00 p.m. when
they meet North Carolina Wesleyan in the opening game of the Emory
Tip-Off Classic. EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS 2008-09 WITH VICTORY
OVER SEWANEE
(Nov. 16) - Emory senior Lora Turner scored a team-high 12 points
and junior Whitney Martin added 10 points along with a career-high
11 rebounds as the Eagles' women's basketball team opened the
2008-09 season with a 71-46 triumph over University of the South
Sunday evening. The game was played at the Woodruff PE
Center on the Emory campus.
The Turner/Martin tandem scored 15 of their combined 22 points
during the final 20 minutes of action in helping the Eagles to a
37-24 second-half scoring advantage over the Tigers. Turner ended
the night by hitting five-of-eight from the floor while Martin
converted four-of-six from the field.
Emory shot 42.0 percent from the floor (21-of-50) for the game,
55.0 percent in the second half. Sewanee, which was disrupted
by Emory's pressure defense, hit just 24.1 percent of its field
goal attempts (14-of-58). Emory held a 45-34 edge in
rebounding and both teams finished with 22 turnovers.
In the first half, the game was tied at 17-17 with 7:58 remaining
before the Eagles closed out the stanza with a 17-5 run.
Freshman guard Melissa Koike ignited the spurt with a three-point
field goal while junior LeShonda Lillard contributed five
points.
The Eagles got out of the blocks quickly in the second half,
scoring the first six points of the stanza to post a 40-22
lead. However, the Tigers countered with a 15-3 sprint that
drew them to within 43-37 with 11:06 on the clock. However,
the host Eagles totaled 12 unanswered points, five coming from
senior Jenny Kraus, to regain control of the game, 55-37 with 8:08
remaining. From there, the closest Sewanee would get would be
16 points.
Emory head coach Christy Thomaskutty got all 15 of her players into
the game with 12 of them finding their way into the scoring
column.
The victory represented Emory's fourth consecutive season-opening
win. The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 18, with a
road game at LaGrange College starting at 6:00 p.m. EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM OPENS 2008-09

SERIES RECORDS - In a series that started
in 1988, Emory claims an all-time record of 26-9 against
South. Last season, the Eagles ventured to Sewanee and posted
a 79-67 win. Pacing the Emory effort in that game was Lora
Turner with 20 points and eight rebounds while Whitney Martin came
off the bench to chip in 10 points and six boards. Emory sports a
13-4 record against the Tigers in games played on its home floor
and has won five of the last six meetings at the Woodruff PE
Center.
Emory holds a 6-1 edge in the all-time series against LaGrange
which started in 2001. The Eagles have captured the last four
meetings between the schools including last year's 79-44 decision
at Emory. In that contest, Emory knocked down 50
percent of its attempts from the floor while converting a
season-high 32 field goals.
EMORY AND SEASON/HOME OPENERS -- Sunday's game
against Sewanee will mark the fourth straight year that the Eagles
have opened their season at the Woodruff PE Center. Emory has
won its last three season openers and shows a record of 13-7 (4-1
under Thomaskutty) in such contests. In home openers, The
Eagles stand 16-4 (4-1 under Thomaskutty).
SMITH LOOKS FOR CONTINUED SEASON-OPENING MAGIC -
If the past two season openers are any indication, the Emory fans
will be looking for junior Mary Smith to turn in another productive
contest. The 5-foot-8 Smith has been the team's top
point producer in each of the past two season openers, averaging
19.5 points while shooting 71.4 percent from the floor
(15-of-21). In last year's 93-55 win over Spelman, Smith
converted six-of-10 from the floor including both of her
three-point opportunities. In 2006, Smith drained nine-of-11
from the field while totaling 20 points in a 72-62 decision over
Southwestern.

TURNER ON EMORY CAREER CHARTS - Lora Turner
enters her senior season ranking prominently in numerous school
categories. Turner heads into Friday's action with 893 career
points, good for the No. 8 position on the school's all-time
list. Her 50.6 percent mark from the floor holds down the No.
3 spot while her 12.1 points per game average is seventh. In
the rebounding department, she is 11th all time at Emory with 454
boards.
Turner scored in double figures on 21 occasions last year en route
to First Team All-UAA honors, the first Emory player to be afforded
such recognition since the 2001-02 season.
LILLARD BACK AT THE POINT - Junior LeShonda
Lillard, an honorable-mention pick to the All-UAA team last season,
looks to build upon a fine first year with the Eagles at her point
guard spot. The 5-foot-6 Lillard started 23 of 24 games last
season, averaging 9.8 points (third high on the team) along with a
team-high 2.9 assists per outing. In addition to her
offensive prowess, Lillard recorded a team-leading 57 steals, good
for fourth place on the school's seasonal chart.

DEFENSE DOES THE TRICK -- During Thomaskutty's
tenure at Emory, the Eagles show a 34-12 record when holding a
foe to 60 or fewer points. Last year, Emory recorded an 8-2
record in those contests.
EMORY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TO PLAY EXHIBITION AT
COLUMBUS STATE
(Nov. 5) - The 2008-09 edition of the Emory University women's
basketball team makes its debut on Saturday (Nov. 8) when it plays
an exhibition game at Columbus State University starting at 2:00
p.m.
Head Coach Christy Thomaskutty is in her fifth season at the helm
of the Emory program and will look to build upon last year's
overall mark of 14-11. She will welcome back a total of 11
letterwinners from last season, including a pair of starters in
senior forward Lora Turner (Florence, AL) and
junior point guard LeShonda Lillard (Bloomington,
IN). Turner, 5-foot-11, earned First Team All-University
Athletic Association honors last season after tossing in 14.3
points and grabbing 6.5 rebounds per outing. The 5-foot-6
Lillard landed honorable mention recognition on the All-UAA squad
last year after scoring at a 9.8 points per-game clip while dishing
a team-high 2.92 assist per contest.
Columbus State, a NCAA Division II program and member of the Peach
Belt Conference, has already played three games and stands 1-2
following its performance at the Disney Tip-Off Classic last
weekend in Florida. Last season, the Lady Cougars, coached by
Jay Sparks, finished with an overall record of 17-12.
"We're looking forward to playing in a game situation and going to
use it as an opportunity to get everybody more comfortable with our
system while learning more about each other," Thomaskutty
said. "Columbus State is long and athletic and definitely
going to pose some challenges for us. We're going to have to take
care of the ball and box out on the glass."
Emory opens the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 16, with a home game
against the University of the South in a 5:00 p.m. start.
