The Emory women's basketball team battled No. 3-ranked Washington University on even terms for close to 30 minutes Sunday afternoon before the Bears pulled away to earn a win at the Woodruff PE Center. Wash U raised its overall record to 16-2, 6-1 in the University Athletic Association, following a 70-60 decision over the Eagles who fell to 9-9 overall, 2-5, in the conference.

Both teams ended the game shooting nearly identical from the floor with the Bears posting a 43.8 percent mark (28-of-64) while Emory checked in at 43.4 percent (23-of-53).   Wash U. hit on 50 percent of its field goal tries in the decisive second half (15-of-30) while Emory sank 32.1 percent (9-of-28).

Sophomore Becca Feldman and freshman Danielle Landry each tied for Emory scoring honors with 10 points apiece with Landry pacing the club with six boards.  Senior Whitney Martin, junior Courtney Von Stein and sophomore Melissa Koike all finished with eight points.  Wash U's Zoe Unruh led all players with 25 points while grabbing 10 boards.

Emory led for the majority of the first half and used a 13-2 run over a four-minute stretch that increased a two-point advantage into a 13-point lead at 26-13 with 8:38 remaining.  Four different players scored for the Eagles in the run with Feldman, Koike and senior Keenan Whitesides all knocking down three-point field goals.  Emory was up by eight points, 32-24, with 5:20 left in the half before the visitors closed out the stanza with a 13-5 sprint that knotted the affair at 37-37 at halftime.

A basketball by Unruh with 14:57 left in the game gave the Bears a 46-42 lead. Emory responded with an 8-0 charge that included three pointers by Feldman and Von Stein that enabled it to surge ahead by a 50-46 count with 12:49 on the clock.  From there, Emory went ice cold from the floor, hitting just one of its next 13 field goal tries while seeing Wash U post a 24-3 scoring run to go ahead, 70-53, with 2:56 left in the game.  The Eagles closed out the afternoon by scoring the game's final seven points to account for the final score.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 5) when it plays at the University of Chicago.
