The 2010-11 Emory women’s basketball team was a youthful unit
that met all challenges with an enthusiasm and passion that bode
well for upcoming seasons. For the majority of the year, head
coach Christy Thomaskutty started a lineup that included two
freshmen, two sophomores, one of who was a first-year member of the
program, and one senior while relying on a number of underclassmen
to battle the rigors of the always competitive University Athletic
Association as well as a tough non-conference array of
games.
Considering the young makeup of the team, the Eagles made a fine
showing, posting an overall won-lost slate of 11-14 (4-10
UAA). Throughout the year Emory saw both the club and some
individuals turn in some noteworthy accomplishments including the
following:
** Rank No. 2 in the UAA and 26th nationally in scoring
with a 73.0 points per-game average, the third-highest mark in
school history.
** Rank No. 3 in the UAA and 91st on the national scene
with 6.0 three-point field goals per game.
** Hold down the No. 1 spot in the UAA and No. 45th
position among D-III programs in steals per game (12.2 spg).
The Eagles established a school seasonal mark with 305 total thefts
during the year and registered 16 contests of 10 or more
steals.
** Sink a total of 694 field goals, third highest on the
school’s seasonal ladder.
** Top the UAA and rank 18th nationally in turnover
margin (+6.28).
** Tie the school’s second-highest effort with 82 blocked
shots.
** Stand 37th among D-III programs in assists per game
(16.2 apg).
** Knock down 149 three-point field goals, the second-highest total
in school annals.

victory over Sewanee (Nov. 19).
** Set a school game records with 56 field, goals, 39 assists and a
63.6 field goal percentage mark vs. Sewanee (Nov. 19).
Emory got out of the gates quickly with wins in its first two games
of the year, both of which were played at the Woodruff PE Center,
using a potent and overwhelming offensive attack to record a 94-74
verdict against Oglethorpe and 129-82 triumph over Sewanee. The
Eagles then dropped three straight contests to considerably more
experienced squads, all of whom would go on to have fine seasons
– The College of St. Benedict (20-7), LaGrange College (20-5)
and Birmingham Southern (15-10).
The Eagles then rattled off four straight victories to boost their
overall slate to 7-3. Included in the win streak was another
win against Sewanee, a two-point decision on the road against
Piedmont and triumphs at home against Spelman College and Agnes
Scott. A tight 76-69 setback at Maryville, who closed out the
year with a 21-5 record, left Emory’s record at 7-4 heading
into the UAA portion of the schedule. After coming out on the
short end of six of their first seven league encounters, the squad
managed to regroup and notch wins in three of its final seven
contests including an impressive 72-55 home decision against
Brandeis and road outcomes against Case Western and Carnegie
Mellon.
Freshman guard Hannah Lilly came through with a
banner rookie season, earning Second Team All-UAA honors as well as
the conference’s Rookie of the Year award, just the second
Emory player to claim that distinction. A starter in 22 of 25
contests, she paced the team and ranked 12th among UAA
cagers in scoring with an 11.6 per-game average. Named to the
D3hoops.com All-South Region Second Team, she posted 14
double-figure scoring contests and either led or shared for team
scoring honors on seven occasions. She chalked up up team's top-two
individual scoring performances of the season, 22 points in games
vs. Piedmont (Dec. 4) and Sewanee (Nov. 19), and tied the school's
single-game record for field goal percentage (.909), hitting
10-of-11 from the floor in the Sewanee affair.
Sophomore center Misha Jackson was another
standout first-year player for the Eagles, landing Second Team
All-UAA recognition after seeing action in all 25 games, 21 in a
starting capacity. The 5-foot-11 Jackson held down the No. 2
spot on the team and was 15th on the UAA chart in
scoring with a 10.6 per-game showing. In addition to her
scoring totals, her 6.7 per-game mark in rebounding was good for
the No. 4 spot on the league ladder. Sinking a team-high 48.0
percent of her attempts from the floor, she registered 11
double-figure scoring performances and was the club’s top
point producer on 10 occasions. She led all Eagles in both
scoring (11.2 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg) in conference
outings.
Sophomore frontliner Danielle Landry continued her
improvement and ended up leading the club and ranking third among
UAA players with a 7.3 per-game showing in rebounding, good for a
15th-place tie on Emory’s seasonal list. A
starter in 22 of 23 contests, the 6-foot Landry led or shared for
team rebounding honors in 14 affairs and registered six games of 10
or more boards. Her career-high 15 rebounds against
Spelman stood as the high-water mark by an Emory player during the
season and tied for 13th place on the school’s
single-game chart. She also tied for second place on the team
with 40 steals and her 1.7 thefts per game was good for the No. 8
spot on the UAA list.
Freshman Savannah Morgan showed plenty of promise
as she handled the bulk of the duties at the point guard
position. A starter in 23 games, she led the squad and stood
sixth among UAA players in assists (4.2 apg) while ranking among
the conference’s top 25 performers with an 8.4 per-game
scoring average. She concluded the campaign with a No. 36
national ranking in assist/turnover ratio (1.8).
Courtney Von Stein closed out a four-year career
as the lone member of the team to start all 25 games, averaging
25.0 minutes and 6.4 points per stint. During her playing
days as an Eagle, she saw action in 83 contests, 44 as a starter,
and wound up fifth on the school’s all-time ladder with a
32.7 percent mark from three-point range and 11th with 56
three-point field goals.
