Records Fall In Emory Women's Basketball Win Over LaGrange

On a night where senior Savannah Morgan become the program's all-time leader in assists, classmate Hannah Lilly set a school single-game mark for most three-point field goals in sparking the No. 13-ranked Emory women's basketball team to a win at home over LaGrange College.  The Eagles raised their record to 3-0 following a 92-61 decision over the Panthers who saw their record even out at 2-2.

Morgan dished out 12 assists, tying the second-highest game mark in school annals, and in the process upped to career total to 412, which surpassed the previous mark of 408 held by Amy Carter (1993-97).  Morgan, who entered the game with 400 total assists, had tied the mark at halftime and then broke it with 17:37 left in the game when she picked up an assist on a Lilly triple. Morgan finished the contest with 13 points and tied senior Selena Castillo for game honors with three steals.

After going three-for-three from beyond the arc en route to an 11-point first half, Lilly exploded in the second stanza, knocking down her first six triple tries and finishing the game with a nine-for-11 showing from distance.  Lilly posted a game-high 29 points (her second-highest career effort) and concluded the evening converting 10-of-14 from the field.

With Emory holding a 41-37 advantage in the early stages of the second half, Lilly took over the game by draining three straight treys over a 93-second span that stretched Emory's lead to 13 points, with 16:04 on the clock.  A bucket by freshman Shellie Kaniut shortly after closed out an 11-0 Eagle run provided the home team with a 15-point bulge.  After a basket by LaGrange, a bucket by Morgan followed by a Lilly three pointer allowed Emory to claim a 19-point lead, 57-38 with 13:54 remaining.  The Panthers got to within 13 points but nine unanswered Emory points put the game out of reach at 67-45 with 9:42 left.

Emory ended the game hitting 45.1 (32-of-71) percent from the floor while LaGrange converted 43.5 percent (20-of-46).  Behind Lilly's output, the Eagles established a game record with 14 three pointers in 31 attempts, finishing with a 45.2 percent showing from long range, while the Panthers hit two-of-11.  Emory finished with a 39-29 advantage on the glass and was paced in the category by Kaniut's seven boards.   Also aiding Emory to its huge 60-30 scoring advantage in the second half was Castillo, who totaled 14 of her career-high 21 points over the final 20 minutes of action.  The Eagles pressured LaGrange into 25 turnovers and finished with a 42-17 advantage in the points-off-turnovers category.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Dec. 1) when it hosts Maryville College in a 3:00 pm tip.
