Defense Lifts #12 Eagles to Win at Sewanee

The Emory University Women's Basketball team capitalized on its best defensive effort of the young season on Tuesday night, as the 12th-ranked Eagles rolled to a 63-42 win over the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

With the win, the Eagles' remained perfect on the season with a 5-0 record, marking the second-straight season and sixth time in the program's history that Emory has won each of its first five games.  Sewanee dropped to 4-3 for the season with the loss.

Emory's defense forced a season-high 35 turnovers, led by a career-high eight steals from sophomore Kadijah Sayyid, the second-most in a single game in the program's history.  The 42 points allowed by the Eagles were the fewest given up by the team in a game this year.

After Sewanee took an early 4-3 lead, the Eagles held the Tigers scoreless for the next 11 minutes and 58 seconds, going on a 20- run to build a 23-4 advantage with just over five minutes left in the first half.  Sewanee would convert just two more field goals in the frame, and four total in the first half, as the Eagles took a 28-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Senior Savannah Morgan paced the Eagles' first half attack with 12 points on a five-for-seven effort from the floor, while Sayyid came off the bench to record five first-half steals, helping Emory turn over the Tigers 22 times during the first 20 minutes of play.

Both offenses would pick up the pace in the second half, but the Eagles would maintain their lead throughout.  Senior Hannah Lilly scored all of her game-high 13 points in the second frame, pacing Emory with a five-for-six shooting effort for the half.

Senior Selena Castillo added a double-digit scoring effort with 11 points, while also collecting six steals, six rebounds and a game-high four assists.

Emory will return to action on Saturday, December 7th, continuing its six-game road swing at Berry College at 2:00 PM.
