Emory Women's Basketball Loses At No. 2 Washington University

Emory Women's Basketball Loses At No. 2 Washington University

The No. 19-ranked Emory women's basketball team closed out a weekend of University Athletic Association play Sunday afternoon with a loss at No. 2 Washington University.  The Eagles saw their overall record slip to 15-5 overall, 4-5 in league action, following a 91-55 setback to the Bears who raised their overall record to 18-2, 8-1 in league outings.

Freshman Shellie Kaniut led the Emory scoring effort with 12 points, her seventh double-figure scoring performance of the year.  Seniors Marissa Resnick and Selena Castillo each totaled nine points with Resnick sinking a career-high tying three three-point field goals in four attempts. Castillo totaled three steals, her 14th effort of the year with two or more thefts, and she moved into the No. 4 spot on the school's seasonal list with 66 steals.

The Bears, coming off a Friday loss to Rochester, shot 48.3 (29-of-60) percent from the floor compared to Emory's season-low 28.8 percent (19-of-66).   WU enjoyed a decided edge at the charity stripe, converting 26 of its 32 attempts while the Eagles were successful on 10-of-14.

Emory stayed on even terms with the Bears early on, building a 17-12 advantage with 10:36 left in the first half after Resnick hit a triple.  However, the Bears took control of the game with a 21-2 barrage that put them up by a 33-19 count with 6:12 remaining.  WU started on a 9-0 run to go ahead by a 21-17 margin before a bucket by Castillo cut the home team's edge to two points.   The Bears then scored 12 unanswered points, taking advantage of Emory missing four field goal tries along with one turnover, in claiming the 14-point cushion.   A three-point by senior Savannah Morgan stemmed the tide, cutting the gap to 11 points, but WU would go into halftime with a 47-31 lead.

WU stymied any hopes of an Emory comeback bid, opening the second half with a 16-5 run that stretched its lead to 63-36 with 13:34 left in the contest.   Junior Maddy Scheppers led the Bears' scoring attack with 19 points while classmate Melissa Gilkey posted a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 14) evening when it plays at Carnegie Mellon University.
