Emory Women's Basketball Comes Up Short At Case Western

Emory Women's Basketball Comes Up Short At Case Western

The Emory women's basketball team attempted to grab its second straight road win on Sunday afternoon but fell short in that bid as it dropped a tough decision to Case Western Reserve University.  The Eagles saw their overall record slip to 16-6 in overall play, 5-6 in the UAA, following a 67-62 setback to the Spartans who upped their overall slate to 9-13, 3-8 in the conference.

Emory finished the contest with a 36.8 percent (28-of-76) showing from the floor compared to the host Spartans' effort of 45.1 percent (23-of-51).   The Eagles did not make any free throws, attempting just two from the stripe, while Case connected on 18-of-29.  CWRU finished with a 48-37 advantage in rebounding which helped negate their 29 miscues.

Seniors Gabi Whitmer and Marissa Resnick tied for team scoring honors with 10 points apiece with Whitmer hitting five-of-10 from the floor and Resnick connecting on four field goals, including a pair of three-point field goals.  Whitmer also grabbed seven boards, second high on the team behind senior Savannah Morgan's nine caroms.

Case led for the majority of the game and held a 40-33 lead with 13:28 remaining in the contest following a 7-0 spurt that snapped a 33-33 deadlock.   Emory battled back to three points on a number of occasions, the final time with 6:14 on the clock after senior Selena Castillo hit a jumper.  The Spartans' Laura Mummey then proceeded to score four points in a 5-0 stretch that stretched their lead to 53-45 with just 3:06 on the clock.  Mummey would lead all players with 19 points, hitting six-of-12 from the floor and seven free throws in 11 attempts.   A put-back by Whitmer drew Emory to within a 55-50 deficit with 2:06 remaining but the Spartans hit five-of-six free throws to take a 60-50 lead with 1:25 remaining.   A three pointer by sophomore Ilene Tsao with 54 ticks on the clock cut Emory's gap to 61-55 but a bucket by CWRU's Brooke Orcutt, who totaled 18 points on the day, followed by a free throw by Mummey extended the Spartans margin to 64-55 with 32 seconds left.

Case Western held a 29-26 lead at halftime, hitting 43.3 percent (13-of-30) from the floor while the Eagles connected on 35.3 percent (12-of-34) of their attempts.  A layup by Whitmer gave the Eagles a 10-9 lead, but the Spartans responded with a 9-2 spurt, with Orcutt scoring four points in that run, to claim an 18-12 edge.  Emory battled back by scoring eight of the game's next 11 points, with Selena Castillo scoring four points, to creep to within 21-20.  CWRU then countered with a 6-0 run to go up by seven points before a pair of Sweeney triples sliced Emory's deficit to one point with30 seconds remaining.   Sweeney led Emory in scoring with eight points while Orcutt picked up eight points for the Spartans.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 21) evening when it hosts New York University.
