2013-14 Emory Women's Basketball Season Recap

2013-14 Emory Women's Basketball Season Recap

The 2013-14 Emory women's basketball team posted the program's third consecutive winning season, finishing with an overall record 16-9.

The Eagles, led by a six-member senior class, used their trademark  of a relentless and swarming defense in  and generated the second-highest number of steals in the history of the program while ranking among the top 10 in Division III in that category.  Emory's commitment to creating havoc in the opposition's offensive attack was certainly productive, resulting in the Eagles generating a total of 626 points (25.04 ppg) off opponent miscues.

On the offensive end of the floor, Emory employed the three-point shot as a main component of its arsenal, and in the process set a school record for most treys in a campaign.

After winning its opening 14 games of the year, an injury to senior standout Hannah Lilly played a key role in a tough stretch for Emory that saw it win just one of its final eight outings, putting a roadblock in its attempt for a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Some of the noteworthy accomplishments turned in by the squad included the following:

** Registering the program's first-ever 14-0 start, while at the same time establishing a school record for consecutive victories.  Included in that stretch were home triumphs over eventual NCAA Tournament teams, Salem (69-60) and Maryville College (68-67), a victory at the Woodruff PE Center against Johns Hopkins, who finished the season with an 18-8 slate, along with a win on the road at Piedmont College who finished with a 17-9 record.   Emory's 72-67 decision over Johns Hopkins (Jan. 4) boosted the team's record to 11-0 and bettered the program's previous mark of 10 straight victories that had been accomplished on two occasions.

** Ranked 13th in the preseason, Emory vaulted to as high as No. 7 in both the WBCA and D3Hoops.com Polls, the highest-ever rankings afforded the program by those two entities.

** Leading the UAA and ranking 10th among all D-III programs in steals per game (13.6 spg).  Emory's 340 steals and its per-game average represented the second-highest seasonal marks in program annals.  The Eagles finished with 20 contests of 10 or more thefts including a 24-steals performance against Sewanee that tied for the No. 3 position on the Eagles' single-game chart.

** Leading the UAA and placing second nationally in turnover margin (+12.32).

** Holding down the No. 2 position in the league and No. 9 in the D-III ranks in assist/turnover ratio.

** Establishing a school seasonal record with 178 three-point field goals.  The Eagles averaged 7.1 triples per game, good for second place in the UAA and 25th nationally.

** Standing second in the UAA and 14th in Division III in fewest turnovers per game (13.8 tpg).

** Won its opening eight home games of the year that ran its Woodpec consecutive victory streak to 16 games.

Senior Savannah Morgan closed out an outstanding four-year run at the point-guard position, earning First Team All-UAA honors for the second straight season while finishing as the program's all-time leader in assists.  Tabbed to the All-South Region Third Team by D3Hoops.com, Morgan doled out a conference-leading 5.4 assists per game with that mark ranking 24th among all Division III players.  Her 135 assists ranked as the fourth-highest individual total in school history, and capped off her career as the owner of three of the top four seasonal marks in that category.  Her total of 526 assists placed her atop the school's all-time ladder, and she moved into the No.  1 spot became when she dished out a dozen (tying the program's second-highest game total) in a 92-61 win vs. LaGrange (Nov. 26).  The 5-foot-7 Morgan also topped the conference and placed seventh in the D-III ranks in assist/turnover ratio (2.5).  Scoring-wise, she produced a team-high average of 15.0 points per contest, good for the No. 3 spot in the UAA and 13th on the program's seasonal chart.  She scored in double figures on 20 occasions and paced the team's scoring attack in 10 contests.

Hannah Lilly saw her senior season come to an untimely end when she suffered a knee injury in the second half of the Washington University game on Feb. 2.  Despite missing Emory's last seven contests of the campaign, she still garnered Second Team All-UAA honors after averaging 13.5 points per outing, good for the No. 2 spot on the club, and knocking down a team-high 46 three-point field goals.  Her 46 treys ranked eighth on the school's seasonal chart while her 42.6 percent mark (46-of-108) from distance was the third-best showing in school history.  A double-figure scorer in 15 of 17 outings, she was the Eagles' top scorer on four occasions.  On the Emory all-time charts, she finished fourth in scoring (1,302 pts.), third in scoring average (13.9 ppg), sixth in field goals (489) and second in three-point field goals (221).

Senior Selena Castillo continued to be the catalyst of the Emory press, setting Emory career and seasonal records in steals.  A starter in 23 of 25 games, the 5-foot-6 Castillo led the UAA and ranked 17th nationally with a school-season mark of 3.32 steals per game.  Her 83 thefts bettered her previous No. 1 standard of 80 set during the 2012-13 campaign, and she finished out her Emory tenure with a total of 229 steals, one better than Amy Carter (1993-97).  Castillo took on more of an offensive role as well, averaging a career-high 12.2 points per game that saw her chalk up 16 double-figure scoring performances, five of which consisted of 20 or more points.

Four-year vet Gabi Whitmer made the most of her playing opportunities, logging 13 starts over the squad's 25 games.  The 5-foot-11 Whitmer stood fifth on the Eagles' score sheet with a 6.6 points-per-game average while her 4.8 per-game showing in rebounding was second.  Whitmer shined in UAA play, pacing the squad and ranking 12th on the league ladder in rebounding (5.5 rpg) while tying for the top spot in offensive rebounds per contests (3.5 orpg).

The 2013-14 campaign also closed out the careers of seniors Marissa Resnick and Lauren Ball. Resnick appeared as a reserve in 46 games during her two years with the program and gave the Eagles a boost with her outside shooting ability.  Ball saw action off the bench in 25 contests, and made her mark away from the court as well, capturing the Bobby Jones Scholarship.
