Emory Women's Basketball Falls To Case Western Reserve

Emory Women's Basketball Falls To Case Western Reserve

Junior Shellie Kaniut and freshman Ashley Oldshue each scored 11 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball team dropped a Sunday afternoon home game to Case Western Reserve.  The Spartans raised their overall record to 6-10, 1-4 in the University Athletic Association following a 76-62 triumph over the Eagles who fell to 10-6 overall, 1-4 in the conference.

It was a tale of two halves with Emory building a 32-25 halftime lead and stretching its advantage to 13 points early in the third quarter, only to see Case Western roar back with 51 points over the final two stanzas of action.

Back-to-back three pointers by senior Khadijah Sayyid and junior Fran Sweeney bumped Emory into a 38-25 lead with 9:29 left in the third period, but the Eagles went cold from the field, going scoreless for five minutes, missing seven straight field goal attempts, while CWRU went on a 14-0 run, with Kara Hageman accounting for eight points, to take the lead at 39-38.  Emory trailed by a point before a three pointer by Hageman, followed by a bucket by Hillary Hellman, upped the Spartans' advantage to 46-40 with 2:30 left in the quarter.  A basket by Sayyid with 39 ticks on the clock cut the Case Western lead to four points heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Case enjoyed a six-point lead with 8:31 remaining but an 8-2 Emory burst that saw four players score, and that was capped by a Sweeney bucket, knotted the score at 55-55 with 5:38 remaining.  However, the Eagles hit another cold patch, converting just one of their following nine field goal attempts while Case posted an 11-2 scoring blitz to lay claim to a 66-57 lead with 1:13 on the clock.  Emory to get to within seven points after a Lauren Weems basket but the Spartans went 10-of-10 from the stripe over the final 1:06 to nail down the victory.  CWRU's final 13 points of the game came from the foul line, with the Spartans winding up the day 23-of-27 at the stripe.

CWRU shot 38.3 percent (23 of 60) from the field, 46.9 percent (15 of 32) over the final two quarters.  Emory checked in at 30.8 percent (24 of 78) on the day, but just 27.9 percent (12 of 43) over the final 20 minutes.  The Spartans held a 49-39 advantage in the rebounding department with junior Michelle Bevan pacing the Eagles with six boards.   Emory did force Case Western into 20 turnovers, totaling 14 steals in the process, with Bevan and Kaniut each registering four thefts.

With Oldshue and Kaniut scoring eight and seven points, respectively, and the Eagles limiting the Spartans to just 28.6 percent (8 of 28) from the field, Emory went into the break with its seven point advantage.  After a Laura Mummey jumped tied the score at 19-19, Emory closed out the final 4:10 of the second quarter on a 13-6 run, which saw six different players score.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Jan. 29) when it plays at the University of Chicago.
