Emory Women's Basketball Drops Season Finale At No. 14 Rochester

The Emory women's basketball team closed out its 2015-16 season with a loss on the road to the University of Rochester.  The No. 14 Yellowjackets raised their overall record to 20-5, 10-4 in the University Athletic Association, following a 66-49 triumph over the Eagles, who wrapped up the year with an overall slate of 13-12, 4-10 in the conference.

Senior Ilene Tsao was the only Emory performer to register double-figure scoring, totaling 10 points on three-of-five field goal shooting while sinking all four of her free throw attempts.  It represented her eighth double-figure scoring effort of the season.  Junior Shellie Kaniut was next up on the team's score sheet, posting nine points.

Trailing by a 30-21 margin entering the third quarter, Emory saw the Yellowjackets score the first 11 points of the stanza, putting the hosts up by a 41-21 count with 6:01 left.  Emory did manage to cut the deficit to 15 points late in the frame, but a three pointer by Cass McCambridge put UR ahead, 49-31, heading into the final 10 minutes of play.  In the last quarter, the closest Emory would get would be 14 points with 5:27 on the clock.

The Eagles finished with a 31.3 percent mark (19 of 61) from the floor compared to UR's effort of 36.9 percent (24 of 65).  Neither team shot well from beyond the arc, with Emory converting two of 12 while the Yellowjackets were successful on four in 22 tries.  Rochester enjoyed a 50-39 advantage in rebounding, partly resulting in a 15-2 bulge in the second-chance-points category.

In the second quarter, a foul shot by freshman Paris Wagner drew Emory to within 19-15, but the Eagles went scoreless for over four minutes while the Yellowjackets scored eight straight points to take a 27-15 lead with 2:21 left.  After a basket by sophomore Lauren Weems snapped the Eagles' scoring drought, UR used a three pointer by Kayla Kibling to take its biggest lead of the opening half.  Emory did reduce its deficit to nine points heading into halftime after Tsao hit a pair of free throws and then scored a bucket with 18 seconds left.

In addition to Tsao, the game closed out the Emory careers of senior Khadijah Sayyid and Sarah Arington.
