Emory Women's Basketball Held Off By NYU

Emory Women's Basketball Held Off By NYU

A stirring rally by the Emory women's basketball team over the final 10 minutes of action that saw it slice a 17-point third-quarter deficit to just two points, came up short as the Eagles dropped a Sunday afternoon road game to New York University.  The Eagles slipped to 13-7, 4-5 in the University Athletic Association, after coming out on the wrong end of a 67-61 verdict to the Violets who upped their overall slate to 12-8, 2-7 in the league.

Senior Shellie Kaniut led all players in scoring with a career-high 27 points, hitting 10-of-21 field goal attempts, including three treys in six opportunities, and four free throws.  It represented her 14th double-figure scoring performance of the season and fourth of 20 or more points.  Sophomore Ashley Oldshue finished with 19 points, her 19th double-digit outing of the campaign, converting eight-of-14 from the floor and three-of-four from the stripe.

Trailing by a 58-41 count late in the third quarter, the Eagles faced a 59-43 deficit heading into the final stanza.  Undaunted, Emory scored the opening eight points of the frame that led to a 16-2 barrage, cutting the Violets' lead to two points, 61-59 with 2:32 left.  Oldshue scored eight points and Kaniut totaled six during the furious rally.  After a pair of free throws by NYU, Kaniut sank a pair from the stripe that kept the Eagles to within two points with 51 ticks on the clock.  A jumper by NYU's Lauren Brown just as the shot clock was winding down stretched its lead to 65-61 with 22 seconds remaining.  Emory could not score on its next possession, which led to a pair of free throws by the Violets Amy Harioka, her 22nd and 23rd points of the day, with seven seconds left that closed out the game's scoring.

Emory was successful on 34.8 percent (23 of 66) of its field goal attempts, including 33.3 percent (5 of 15) from three-point range.  The Eagles sank 10 free throws in 15 attempts.  NYU shot 49.1 percent (26 of 53) from the floor and hit six-of-13 three-point attempts.  Each team finished with 37 boards.

The first half ended up a shootout between Kaniut and the Violets' Harioka, with Kaniut tallying 17 points and Harioka 20.  Kaniut sank six-of-10 from the floor, including three triples, while Harioka was successful on seven field goals in nine tries, including six-of-nine from three-point range.  Emory built a 23-20 lead after the first 10 minutes of action before NYU outscored the Eagles by a 22-10 margin in the second stanza to take a 42-33 edge into the break. A three-pointer by Emory's Lindsey Tse cut NYU's advantage to 31-27 with 6:25 on the clock, but five straight points by the Violets, started by a Harioka triple, pushed them to a 36-27 cushion with 5:46  left. A Kaniut jumper with 1:44 remaining drew Emory to within six points, but a Harioka three pointer with 1:17 left closed out the scoring for the half.  NYU shot 47.2 percent (17 of 36) from the floor, including 58.3 percent (7 of 12) from distance.  The Eagles converted 35.3 percent (12 of 34) of their field goal tries, including 45.5 percent (5 of 11) from beyond the arc.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 10) when it plays at Washington University in a scheduled 6:00 pm (CST) start.
