Emory Women's Basketball Defeated By Chicago

The Emory women's basketball team closed out a weekend of UAA road action with a Sunday afternoon setback to the University of Chicago.  The Eagles saw their overall record fall to 13-9, 4-6 in the conference, following a 77-56 defeat to the Maroons who improved to 16-6 in overall affairs while maintaining a first-place tie in the conference at 9-2.

Playing without senior Shellie Kaniut, the team's second-leading scorer, Emory ended the contest shooting 41.5 percent (22 of 53) while the host Maroons finished at 46.8 percent (29 of 62).  Three-point shooting played a key role in the final outcome with Chicago knowing down 45.5 percent (10 of 22) from distance compared to the Eagles' 28.6 percent (4 of 14).  UC held a 37-31 advantage in rebounding.

Freshman Allison Chernow paced the Emory scoring effort with 14 points, her second-highest total and sixth double-figure effort of the season.  Sophomore Ashley Oldshue contributed 13 points, converting five-of-eight field goal attempts along with all three of her free opportunities, en route to posting her 19th consecutive and 21st double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Oldshue has registered 359 points this year, good for the No. 14 spot on the program's seasonal chart. Oldshue also topped the club with eight rebounds.  Freshman Erin Lindahl chipped in nine points, hitting four-of-eight from the floor.

Chicago scored the first eight points of the third quarter as part of an 18-7 run that stretched a nine-point lead at the start of the frame to a 20-point bulge, 57-37, with 3:46 left in the stanza.  Mia Farrell scored five points for the home squad in that stretch, ending the day with a team-high 14 points.  The Eagles scrapped back with a 12-4 spurt over the final 3:07 of the quarter, with Oldshue scoring five points and Chernow coming through with a three-point play, to narrow the deficit to 61-49 entering the final 10 minutes of action.  A pair of free throws by Oldshue drew Emory to within 11 points with 6:37 left, but it was able to put just three more points up on the board for the remainder of the games as the Maroons gradually pulled away to secure the win.

Emory got off to a good start, opening up a 15-7 lead with 3:22 left in the first quarter following a bucket by Oldshue.  However, the Maroons closed out the final 2:32 of the stanza on a strong note, outscoring the Eagles by an 11-2 margin to take an 18-17 lead.  UC scored eight of the first 10 points of the second stanza to move to a 26-19 advantage with 5:43 left in the second stanza.  However, back-to-back buckets by Michelle Bevan cut the gap to three points with 4:07 left.  A pair of free throws by Chernow kept Emory to within three points with 3:17 left. The Eagles kept on the Maroons' heels, eventually drawing to within three points after Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod made a pair of free throws with 1:12 remaining, but UC used a three pointer by Farrell, followed by a three-point play by Stephanie Anderson to take a 39-33 edge into halftime.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 17) when it hosts Case Western Reserve.
