Emory Women's Basketball Posts Home Win Over Case Western

Junior Ashley Oldshue totaled a team-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in leading the Emory women's basketball squad to a Friday evening home win over Case Western Reserve.  The Eagles snapped a four-game losing skid and raised their overall record 14-9, 5-7 in the University Athletic Association following a 79-67 decision over the Spartans who slipped to 13-10 in overall play, in the league.

Oldshue ended the evening sinking eight-of-15 from the floor and five-of-five from the stripe in notching her 20th straight and 22nd overall double-digit performance of the campaign. Senior Kaniut contributed 16 points while classmate Fran Sweeney rounded out the Eagles' double-digit scorers with 11 points.  Freshman Allison Chernow doled out a season-high tying nine assists.

Holding a five-point lead after three frames, Emory scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, ignited by a triple by Sweeney, to bolt to a 59-47 bulge with 9:07 left. The Spartans drew to within eight points with 8:09 on the clock, but Kaniut tallied six points during an 11-3 blitz that extended the Eagles' cushion to 16 points, 70-54, with just under six minutes remaining. The Spartans managed to cut the gap to 10 points with 3:10 left, but a three-point play by Oldshue started a 7-0 spurt that boosted Emory to its biggest lead of the evening, 79-62 with 2:08 left.

Emory connected on 44.6 percent (33 of 74) from the floor, including a 57.1 percent showing (20 of 35) over the last two quarters.  Case ended the night with a 39.7 percent effort (25 of 63) from the floor. The Eagles enjoyed a big 46-31 margin on the glass, 17-9 on the offensive end of the floor, with Oldshue grabbing six o-boards.  It was the 11th time this year that Emory finished a game with a double-figure advantage in rebounding.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 19) when it hosts Carnegie Mellon in a 2:00 pm tip.
