Emory Women's Basketball Drops Home Decision To Carnegie Mellon

The Emory women's basketball team closed out a home weekend of University Athletic Association play with a Sunday afternoon setback to Carnegie Mellon University.  The Tartans raised their overall record to 17-7, 6-7 in the UAA, following an 82-60 verdict over the Eagles who slipped to 14-10 in overall action, 5-8 in the conference.

CMU ended the afternoon connecting on 57.9 percent (33 of 57) from the floor compared to Emory's 33.8 percent (23 of 68).  The Tartans' effort from the field marked an opponent season high against the Eagles.  Neither team was efficient from three-point range with Carnegie Mellon recording a 29.4 (5 of 17) percent performance while Emory checked in at 28.6 percent (6 of 21).  CMU finished with a 42-34 edge in rebounding.

Sophomore Ashley Oldshue led Emory in scoring with 15 points, her 23rd double-figure scoring outing of the season, hitting six-of-14 field goals and three-of-five free throws.  Oldshue also topped the squad with seven boards.  Senior Shellie Kaniut was the Eagles' other double-figure scorer with 13 points on six-of-11 field goal shooting while making one from the stripe.  Her output today enabled her to move into 11th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 903 points. Senior Fran Sweeney chipped in nine points, sinking three triples in eight attempts.

Holding a 22-21 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play, the Eagles maintained a 29-28 advantage with 5:22 left in the second stanza after freshman Allison Chernow knocked down a three pointer. However, the Tartans closed out the half on an 11-4 spurt to claim a 39-33 heading into the break.  CMU shot a blazing 63 percent (17 of 27) over the opening 20 minutes to Emory's 38.2 percent (13 of 34), but the Eagles converted five treys from beyond the arc in keeping the game within reach.

CMU took control of the contest early in the third quarter, ending the frame with a 32-10 scoring advantage that put it ahead by a 71-43 count heading into the final 10 minutes of action. The Tartans scored the first nine points, extending their lead to 48-33.  After a bucket by Kaniut, CMU kept the pressure on, using eight points from Lisa Murphy during an 11-2 blitz that pushed it to a 59-37 margin with 5:40 left. Murphy closed out the game leading all players with 35 points, hitting 16-of-19 from the floor and three-of-six free throws, and 15 rebounds

Emory returns to action next Saturday (Feb. 25) when it closes out the regular season with a Senior Day battle against Rochester.
