Emory Women's Basketball Tames Tigers Of Sewanee

Emory senior Ashley Oldshue led a trio of double-figure scorers with 14 points in helping the Emory women's basketball team to a Tuesday evening win at home over The University of the South.  The Eagles raised their record to 4-2 following a 72-52 decision over the Tigers who fell to 5-3.

Oldshue was successful on six-of-10 from the floor and two-of-two from the charity stripe in notching her fifth double-digit outing of the campaign.  Sophomore Molly Weiss contributed a career-high 13 points that saw her convert five field goals in seven opportunities, including three-of-four from beyond the arc.  Junior Erin Lindahl rounded out the trio with a season-high 12 points.

The Eagles closed out the first stanza with a 15-5 lead, thanks to an 11-0 burst over the final 4:46 of the frame, with Weiss accounting for five of those points.  The Tigers misfired on their final six field goal attempts during that stretch while turning the ball over on five occasions.  Holding a 19-7 advantage early in the second quarter, the Eagles rattled off seven straight points, highlighted by a Lindahl trey, to take command of the contest at 26-7 with 5:29 left in the half.  Sewanee got to within 14 points, but a pair of makes from the charity stripe by Lindahl, her eighth and ninth points of the opening half, with two seconds left, propelled Emory to a 38-16 cushion heading into the break.

Emory extended its lead to 28 points, 50-22, with 4:37 left in the third quarter following an 11-2 spurt that saw Weiss and junior Allison Chernow drain triples. Sewanee cut its gap to 21 points by the time the frame had ended, but with Oldshue scoring eight of the team's 11-2 barrage to open the final stanza, the Eagles registered their first of two 30-point leads of the contest at 65-35.

Emory ended the contest shooting 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the field compared to Sewanee's 32.1 percent (17-of-53).  The Tigers were efficient from beyond the arc, connecting on 45 percent (9-of-20) while Emory checked in at 38.9 percent (7-of-18).   With Chernow grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds, Emory held a 42-28 bulge on the glass.  Chernow also totaled game highs with four assists and four steals.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Nov. 30) when it plays at Berry College in a 7:00 p.m. tip.
