Under the leadership of third-year head coach, Misha Jackson, and led by a strong veteran presence, the 2019-20 Emory University women's basketball squad posted its second consecutive 19-win campaign as well as its fifth straight season with a winning record.
The Eagles ended the year with a 19-7 record and finished second in the University Athletic Association, recording the team's fifth-ever double-digit win total in conference play with its second straight 10-4 win-loss ledger.
Strong defense and the ability to not turn the ball over proved to be pillars of the 2019-20 team as Emory finished second in the UAA and 17th in Division III with 13.4 turnovers per game while holding opponents to a UAA-leading 56.9 PPG (70th in DIII).
Offensively, the Eagles saw four players: seniors Erin Lindahl, Allison Chernow, junior Blair Ripley and sophomore Tori Huggins average in double figures as the team poured in 68.3 points per contest and shot the third best from the floor in the conference at 41.9-percent.
In addition, Ripley and company helped the Eagles to 4.3 blocks per game, a figure that represented the second-best mark in the UAA and 54th in the country. Ripley set single-season records for her defensive prowess, finishing her junior campaign with 56 total blocks and 2.2 blocks per game.
The Jackson-guided Eagles got off to one of their better starts in program history, opening the year with 14 wins over their first 16 times taking the court which included the third-longest winning streak ever as the team won nine in a row from December 7th through January 31st. The streak included a five-game winning streak to open the UAA conference slate, the best-ever opening stretch to the league schedule in program history.
A tough five-game stretch against Chicago, Washington and New York University between Jan. 31 and February 14th halted the hot streak before Emory regrouped over the home stretch of the season.
The 1-4 record during the stretch put added importance on the final four games if the Eagles were to make a return trip to the postseason. Emory was up to the task, closing out the regular season with a four-game winning streak against Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western Reserve and Rochester. However, in the end it was not enough as the Eagles were denied an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Emory saw three players honored with All-UAA acclaim with Ripley earning a First Team while Lindahl and Chernow secured Second Team berths. Ripley led the team with 11.7 points per game to go along with her 6.6 rebounds per contests. Lindahl and Chernow each turned in 11.0 PPG averages with Lindahl tying Ripley for the team-lead with 15 outings with 10 points or more. Of those 15 outings, Lindahl produced 16 points during a February 9th affair with WashU to become the 11th member of the program's 1,000-point club.
Furthermore, Huggins and junior Molly Weiss contributed with stellar seasons with Huggins chiming in with 10.2 PPG and a team-leading 8.5 rebounds per game which ranked 162nd among Division III leader. Weiss put forth a junior campaign where she became one of the top three-point shooters in the conference, topping the team with 54 treys (5th most in a single-season) and finished 41st nationally with her 39.7 three-point FG-percentage.
In addition to Chernow and Lindahl, the Eagles will see the departures of fellow seniors Lindsey Tse, Hazel Carmona, Benna Ames and Safiya Dzotsi. All four players saw action in over 40 career games while Tse finished second all-time in program history with 474 assists and highlighted the team with her selection to the Emory 100 Senior Honorary.
