Women's Basketball Fends Off Chicago For 55-47 Win

The Emory University women's basketball team finished an unblemished UAA weekend Saturday evening, defeating the University of Chicago 55-47 in a tightly contested, low scoring affair at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

Three Eagles finished in double figures as Emory improved to 8-4 and 2-1 in the conference. Senior Tori Huggins and junior Claire Brock tallied 12 points each with senior Anna Arato chipping in with 10. For the Maroons, Klaire Steffens paced UC with 12 points as Chicago dropped to 7-6 and 1-1 in league play.

Following an even first quarter, the Eagles began the second with seven straight points to earn a 20-14 edge before gaining their largest lead of the half at 23-16. However, the Maroons answered with a 7-0 strike to even the score. The game remained evenly played as the teams went into the half separated only by one point with UC leading 28-27.

Emory's defense shined in the third quarter as the Eagles forced nine turnovers and limited Chicago to just six points total on 3-of-12 shooting. Freshman Daniella Aronsky scored all five of her points in the frame as Emory outscored Chicago 13-6 to head into the fourth leading 40-34.

The Eagles continued to hold sway down the stretch, leading by 12 points at 50-38. UChicago got within five points in the final minute. However, Emory closed things out from there to clinch the win.

The Eagles finished 21-for-47 from the floor and were 6-for-13 from distance. Huggins and Arato each sank two from behind the arc while Brock was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line with all four makes coming in the fourth.

Emory continues the UAA docket next Friday and Sunday with the first double weekend on the road at Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon.
