Women's Basketball Bounces Back, Upsets #10 UChicago 78-67

The Emory University women's basketball team bounced back in a big way Friday night, upsetting No. 10 ranked University of Chicago 78-67 at the Ratner Athletics Center in Chicago.

Senior Claire Brock led all scorers, scoring 20 of her 24 points in the second half as the Eagles opened the second half of the UAA schedule with a statement win, improving to 4-4 in conference play and 13-5 overall. Sophia North paced the Maroons with 20 points as UChicago dropped its second straight, falling to 5-3 in UAA action and 16-3 on the season.

The Eagles were impressive in the win, outscoring the Maroons in three of the four quarters including a 30-15 mark in the fourth. Emory shot 48.1% from the field and 9-for-20 from three in the upset bid. Brock was one of four Emory players in double figures with sophomore Daniella Aronsky going for 13 points on four threes, sophomore Morgan Laudick posting 12 points and junior Izzy Munson leading the reserves with 11 points, including six in the final frame.

Trailing 52-48 through three quarters, the Eagles scored the first five points to open the fourth with a three-pointer by Aronsky followed by a Brock floater gave Emory the lead with 9:05 remaining. The teams traded baskets from there and saw the Maroons in front by two at 62-60 with 5:13 to play.

From there the Eagles locked down on defense and made clutch shots, going on an 11-0 run across the next 3:42 to put the game out of reach. Brock converted an and-one opportunity to give Emory the lead at 63-62 before following with a driving layup. With the lead 67-62 after a Laudick jumper, Brock sealed the win, knocking down all three free throw attempts as she fouled with the shot clock expiring at 2:02. Across the game's remaining minutes, Munson led the team with five points as she came through on the defensive end and knocked down three of her four free throw trips.

The Eagles take on UAA leader WashU on Sunday to round out the first of two consecutive road trips. Tip off from St. Louis is set for 3:00 PM EST.
