Women's Basketball Falls on the Road 78-61 to the WashU Bears

After a big win over No. 10 Chicago on Friday night, the Emory University women's basketball team fell to WashU in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon as a result of an offensive onslaught from the Bears in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles record in the UAA moves to 4-5 after the loss as they hold a 13-6 record overall for the season while the Bears further cement their lead atop the conference with an 8-1 record in UAA play.

Senior Claire Brock led the Eagles in scoring for the 13th time this season as she recorded 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field including an impressive 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Sophomore Daniella Aronsky also had a 4-for-7 shooting day from deep as she finished with 16 points while also contributing four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Erin Martin was the only other Eagle to cross the double digit scoring threshold as she poured in ten points while also showing off her defensive skill set with two steals and a block. For the Bears, forward Maya Arnott registered a double-double as she led all players with 26 points and 12 rebounds as she was instrumental in the WashU victory.

The Bears were incredibly efficient from the floor all day as they shot 54.5% from the field and they compounded that issue for the Eagles with nine offensive rebounds which led to ten second chance points. WashU put on a passing clinic to go along with their efficient shooting day as they notched 21 assists to Emory's nine. The Eagles were able to stay competitive for the bulk of the game by winning the turnover battle as they forced the Bears into 20 turnovers while losing the ball just 15 times themselves.

The Eagles found themselves in a miniature 8-2 hole early but were able to dig themselves out of it with a 12-2 scoring run highlighted by the shot making abilities of Brock. The second quarter was a battle with the Eagles trailing by three late in the period but a steal from senior Mariane Auza led to a fast break triple from Brock which saw the score knotted at 34 apiece at halftime.

The third quarter began with a layup late in the shot clock from sophomore Morgan Laudick to give the Eagles their first lead of the game. The Bears would respond in kind taking a four point lead into the final frame of the game. WashU came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth quarter, as they opened the period on a 9-2 run to take a 63-52 lead. Another 11-3 run from the Bears put the game out of reach for the Eagles as WashU took the 78-61 victory.

The Eagles stay on the road next weekend as they travel to Pittsburgh, PA on Friday for a matchup with Carnegie Mellon at 5:30 PM before making the trek to Cleveland, OH on Sunday at 1:00 PM to take on Case Western Reserve.
