The Emory University women's basketball team pulled off a come from behind 70-59 victory over the Carnegie Mellon Tartans on Friday night in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Eagles move back to .500 in conference play with a 5-5 record against UAA opponents this season while overall they sit at 14-6 with four games left to play in the regular season. Carnegie Mellon is 2-8 in the UAA while they sit at 11-10 overall.
Sophomore Daniella Aronsky continued her stellar play this season as she led all scorers with 18 points including shooting 5-for-7 from three point land which continues to improve her nation leading three-point percentage. Junior Izzy Munson came off the bench and scored 15 points, all of which were scored in the second half, as she played a pivotal role in the Eagles comeback victory. Sophomore Morgan Laudick was the only other Eagles player to reach double figures as she notched 12 points while also pulling down eight rebounds. For the Tartans, Catherine Or recorded a double-double scoring a team-high 16 points while also ripping down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Emory continued to demonstrate excellent three point defense as the Tartans were held to just 1-for-15 shooting from three while knocking down nine triples of their own. While the two teams coughed the ball up at the same rate it was the Eagles who capitalized on the Tartans mistakes scoring 20 points off of turnovers to the Tartans eight. The Eagles bench took advantage of their opportunities as they scored a whopping 23 points while Carnegie Mellon's bench unit only mustered six.
The Eagles found themselves in an early hole, surrendering a 9-2 run to the Tartans to open the contest and another 8-0 run in the middle of the first quarter that put them behind 17-4. The Eagles cut into the lead some in the second quarter going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by an Aronsky three on a fast break, that cut the lead to six. The Tartans were able to stretch the lead back up nine as they headed into the locker room at halftime with a 36-27 lead.
Early in the third period the Eagles knocked down three straight triples, with Aronsky putting in two of them, to cut the Tartans lead down to two. Emory took their first lead of the game with 3:32 left in the third off a Munson jumper that put the Eagles up 43-42. Emory closed the third on a 7-2 run to stretch their lead out to five entering the final quarter of the game. Emory stayed hot entering in the fourth, expanding their lead to ten with Aronsky knocking down yet another three ball. Emory stayed comfortably in the lead the rest of the way with the Tartans only getting within six the rest of the way as the Eagles swept the season series with their 70-59 victory.
The Eagles are back on the road on Sunday as they travel to Cleveland, OH for a rematch against Case Western Reserve at 1:00 PM.
