2022-23 Women’s Basketball Season Recap

The Emory University women's basketball team completed another successful season ending with a trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament, the first appearance in the tournament since the 2018-19 season.

The Eagles finished the season with a 17-8 record under the leadership of Head Coach Misha Jackson and held an 8-6 record in the conference to finish fourth in the UAA. This season marked the seventh consecutive season the Eagles held a winning record at seasons end.

For the second season in a row, the strong defensive principals around the three-point arc allowed the Eagles' squad to finish first in the conference and 17th in the nation in three-point percentage allowed (23.4%), down 0.5% from last season. Emory also showed their offensive strength this season finishing just outside of the top-50 (58) in field-goal percentage making 671 out of 1628 attempts (41.2%). The Eagles also finished 36th in the nation with a three-point shooting percentage of 32.4%.

The duo of a senior and sophomore showed one breakout performance after another each season long finishing in the top 25 in multiple national statistics. Senior Claire Brock recorded yet another breakout season and became an offensive force around the court. She led the team with 407 points placing her sixth in the conference and in the top-150 in the nation and averaged 16.3 points per game. Brock became the best free-throw shooter on the team making 81 free throws out of 94 attempts to finish the season with an 86.2 free-throw percentage. The numbers placed her second in the conference and 21st in the nation. She posted a career-high 34 points against LaGrange at the beginning of the season after scoring 33 against Colorado College the day before. She also recorded two double doubles early in the season, both against LaGrange.

Another breakout season came from sophomore Daniella Aronsky playing and starting in all 25 games for the Eagles. She finished behind Brock with 266 points averaging 10.6 per game finishing 17th in the conference in points and 15th in points per game. Aronsky became a leader on the court registering 163 assists on the year finishing seventh in the nation, setting a new program record, while also recording 6.5 assists per game, good for the Division III statistical champion. Aronsky was able to establish herself as a three-point contender leading the team with 63 three pointers and placing 46th in the nation, also leading the country in three-point percentage while smashing the team record at 46.7%. She posted a career-high 14 assists against Agnes Scott and marked her first double-double against Asbury in January.

The Eagles jumped to a hot start at the beginning of the season taking the first four games of the season. The team took a tight loss against Mary Hardin-Baylor before taking the next two games to go 6-1 in the month of November. Once again, Emory took the next two games to hold an 8-1 record going into a stacked conference schedule. The Eagles started conference play with a loss to Rochester but followed with a thriller against Carnegie Mellon. In one of the most dramatic finishes, senior Mariana Auza made a buzzer-beater layup to win the game with 0.4 seconds remaining. The Eagles went 3-3 during the rest of January before continuing conference play. Emory would continue to alternate wins and losses in league play but was able to pick up a win against Chicago who finished the season 12th overall on d3hoops.com, and Rochester to end the regular season.

The Eagles earned a bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament and fought hard in the first round but were bested by Millikin to end the season.
