Emory Women's Golf Sixth After First Round Of Jekyll Island Collegiate

The Emory University women's golf team made its first appearance in a competitive round in over a year today at the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate. The 54-hole tournament is being played on the 5,801-yard, par-72 Indian Mound Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.

The Eagles stand in sixth place out of 16 teams after turning in a program-best score of 319. No. 2-ranked Methodist is first after the opening 18 holes of action with a mark of 306.  No. 10 Mary Hardin-Baylor is second, six shots off the pace at 312 while Carnegie Mellon, ranked fourth nationally, is third with a 315.

A trio of rookies, Rebecca Schiffman, Jessica Lan and Mariana Chong, were the pacesetters for the Eagles, with all three carding a seven-over par 79, good for a 16th-place tie in the 82-player field. Schiffman made three birdies on the day while Lan and Chong each had a pair. Closing out the team's scoring was sophomore Ksheera Jalakam with an 82.  Sophomore Lillian Knetter shot a 90.

Paige Church of Methodist shot the top score of the day with a one-over 73.

The second round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate will take place on Saturday.
