The No. 3 ranked Emory University women's golf team is one shot back of the lead following the first day of the MCC Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.
The Eagles fired a 291 as a team and stand one stroke behind Carnegie Mellon which entered the clubhouse with a first-round total of 290. Washington & Lee University rounds out the top-three team finishers as the Generals sit at +11 with 299.
Freshman Derica Chiu headlined the Eagles on Sunday, shooting a four-under 68 to lead the field of 75 golfers. Junior Heejo Hyun shined in her return to the lineup, carding a one-under 71 to end the day in fifth place.
Junior Sharon Mun turned in a score of 75 and stands in a tie for 17th while freshman Esther Jung ended round one in a tie for 26th after shooting 77 over 18 holes. Junior Ellen Dong rounded out the Eagles in action on Sunday, shooting 79 and will enter Monday in a tie for 36th.
Emory will look to overtake its fellow UAA competitors on Monday when play resumes at 8:30 AM CT at the Montgomery Country Club.
