Athletes of the Week

Offense

(Oct. 30) Emory University's Whitney Briggs helped the Eagles defeat conference-rival Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory.  Briggs' goal, her fifth of the season, came in the 15th minute of the match.  The junior forward has scored a team-high three goals in conference play this season, including two game-winning goals.  Briggs has five goals and one assist for 11 points in her first season on the team.  Emory University is 9-5-2 this season.

Defense

(Oct. 30) Emory University goalkeeper Amy Franciscovich picked up her 48th career win in a 1-0 victory over Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), setting a new school record for career victories.  Franciscovich recorded her sixth shutout of the season in the game, lowering her goals against average to 0.90 and improving her record to 8-5-2 this season.  The senior moves past former Eagle Andrea Pawliczek ('01C) for the most victories in school history, and has recorded 11 more shutouts over her career than any other Emory goalkeeper.  She also became the first Eagle to surpass the 6000 minutes-played mark during a match against the University of Rochester (N.Y.).  With the shutout win, Franciscovich helped the Eagles improve to 9-5-2 this season.


Offense
(Oct. 23) Emory University midfielder Kerri Lydon scored two goals and recorded three assists, helping the Eagles to a 12-0 victory over Mary Baldwin College (Va.).  Lydon struck early, scoring the Eagles' first goal in the fourth minute of the game.  The sophomore added one more goal and two assists in the first half, before recording her final assist of the day in the second half.  Lydon's three assists are the second-highest single-game total in school history.  Lydon helped Emory University improve to 3-0-2 over its last five games, and 8-4-2 overall this season.

(Oct. 23) Emory University defender Leanna Racine was part of an Emory defense that did not allow a shot to Mary Baldwin College (Va.) in a 12-0 victory.  Racine helped the Eagles record their fifth-straight shutout, while out-shooting Mary Baldwin 59-0.  The Emory defense has not allowed a goal in the last 525 minutes of play.  The sophomore was active on the offensive side of the ball as well, scoring her first goal of the season and second of her career.  Racine helped the Eagles improve to 8-4-2 on the 2006 campaign.


Offense

(Oct. 16) Emory University midfielder Alexa Wahr scored the first game-winning goal of her career, helping Emory to a victory last week.  Wahr's game winner came in the 69th minute against conference-rival New York University, leading the Eagles to a 2-0 victory over the Violets.  The sophomore almost struck again in the 79th minute of a scoreless game against Brandeis University (Mass.), taking a shot on goal that was deflected at the last second by a midfielder for the judges.  Wahr has two goals for four points this year.  The Eagles improved to 7-4-1 overall this season, and are tied for second in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a 2-1-1 conference record.

(Oct. 16) Emory University goalkeeper Amy Franciscovich recorded two shutouts in conference games last week, helping the Eagles to a 1-0-1 record in two games.  Franciscovich picked up the 46th win of her career, one shy of tying the school record, in a 2-0 defeat over New York University on Friday, converting two saves in the game.  The senior co-captain continued her solid play on Sunday, making eight saves and holding Brandeis University (Mass.) scoreless through 110 minutes.  Franciscovich has four consecutive shutouts for Emory, and has not allowed a goal in her last 435 minutes of play.  She has compiled a 0.92 goals against average this season, making 56 saves through 13 games.  The Eagles are second in the University Athletic Association (UAA) this season with a 2-1-1 conference record.


Offense

(Oct. 9) Emory University's Whitney Briggs scored her first goal as an Eagle, helping the team to its first conference win of the season.  Briggs scored the game-winning goal for Emory in a 1-0 victory over University Athletic Association opponent University of Chicago (Ill.).  The junior took five shots during two games for the Eagles last week.  Briggs has one goal and one assist for Emory this year for three points.  The Eagles are 6-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play this season.

(Oct. 9) Emory University goalkeeper Amy Franciscovich did not allow a goal in her last two games, holding opponents scoreless for 200 minutes last week.  Franciscovich shut out conference-rival University of Chicago (Ill.), converting on five saves during the game.  The senior co-captain completed her second shut out in as many days against Rhodes College (TN), making six saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie.  Franciscovich holds a 5-4-1 record this season, with a 1.13 goals against average, 46 saves and three shutouts.  She currently holds the school record for career shutouts with 29 and is second in school history with 45 career wins.  The Eagles are 6-4-1 overall this season, with a 1-1-0 conference record.


Offense

(Sept. 25) Joyce Lam scored two goals and added two assists during a pair of Emory University wins last week.  Against the University of the South (Tenn.), Lam scored two goals and added an assist, while taking nine shots, six of which were on goal.  Lam picked up an assist in a game against Oglethorpe University (Ga.) as well, giving her six points during the week.  The sophomore leads the team with four assists and second on the team with three goals and 10 points.  Emory has won four consecutive games, and has improved its record to 5-2-0 this season.

Defense
(Sept. 25) Grace Lam was part of an Emory University defense that allowed one goal during two games last week.  Lam helped hold the Eagles' opponents without a shot for 144:26 minutes, a streak which lasted over parts of three games.  In two Emory games last week, Lam's defense held opponents to eight shots and one goal, while picking up a shutout against Oglethorpe University (Ga.).  This season, the Eagles defense has helped Emory outshoot its opponents 154-47.  With the two wins this week, the Eagles improved to 5-2-0 this season.


Offense

(Sept. 18) Emory University forward Jamie English scored two goals and added one assist in two games for the Eagles last week.  Against Reinhardt College (Ga.) English picked up her first assist of the season, helping the Eagles to a 7-1 win.  The junior continued her good play against Greensboro College (NC), when she scored the only two goals of the game within three and a half minutes, in a 2-0 Emory win.  Over the course of the two games, English took six shots, four of which were on goal.  With the two wins, the Eagles improved to 3-2-0 this season.

Emory University forward Ali Sullivan scored three goals and added one assist in two Eagles wins last week.  Sullivan scored the first Emory hat trick in almost three years, when she scored three goals and added an assist against Reinhardt College (Ga.).  The junior added an assist in the game as well.  She took eight shots, five of which were on goal, during two games last week.  Sullivan's five goals and 11 points are both team bests this season.

(Sept. 18) Emory University's Laurel O'Neal helped the Eagles defense not allow a shot to Greensboro College (NC), and only seven shots to Reinhardt College (Ga.), during two wins last week.  O'Neal and the rest of the Emory defense tied a school record by not allowing a shot to Greensboro, as the team picked up its second shutout win of the season. Earlier in the week, O'Neal helped hold Reinhardt, who entered the match averaging five goals per game, to only one score during a 7-1 rout.  For the season, the Eagles defense has out-shot its opponents 104-35. Emory improved its record to 3-2-0 with the two victories.


Defense
(Sept. 11) Defender Laurel O'Neal helped Emory University outshoot their opponents 26-21 over two games at the Guilford College Classic.  Against Guilford College, the senior co-captain helped to keep the Eagles in the game, despite competing with one less player on defense due to a red card.   O'Neal added three shots during the tournament, including one shot on goal.  The Eagles are 1-2-0 this season.


Offense
(Sept. 5) Emory University forward Joyce Lam recorded her first assist of the season in a 3-0 victory against the Savannah College of Art & Design this week. The sophomore assisted on a goal in the 84th minute, the final goal in the Eagles' shutout win. The assist was the fourth of Lam's career. The forward took three shots in the game, two of which were on goal.

Defense
(Sept. 5) Midfielder Jessie Dean helped the Eagles to a three-goal victory this week over the Savannah College of Art & Design. Dean's defensive contributions allowed the Eagles to record a shutout in their opening game of the season. The senior added a goal in the 82nd minute of the game to clinch the contest for Emory. The senior co-captain now has six career goals.
