The Emory University senior class of Jamie
English, Emily Fedeles, and Julia
Sanders helped the Eagles to a 51-17-6 record and three
trips to the NCAA Tournament over the last four years, including a
16-2-2 record and a ‘Sweet-16' finish in 2007.
Jamie English scored the lone goal for the Eagles
in their 2-1 loss to Lynchburg College (Va.) during the NCAA
Tournament. English deflected the ball into the corner of the
net in the 68th minute to knot the game at one goal apiece.
The goal was the senior's 11th of the season, the 13th-best single
season total in school history. English finishes her Emory
career with 21 goals (the eighth-best mark in Emory history) and 58
points. She was named to the all-UAA first team for her
performance this season.
Emily Fedeles compiled one of the best single
seasons for an Emory goalkeeper, setting a school record with a
0.33 goals against average. The all-UAA first team member
recorded an 11-2-2 record during the year, shutting out nine
opponents.
Julia Sanders played in 62 career games for Emory,
the most out of anyone in this year's senior class. She
finished the season with a goal and an assist, and her defensive
contributions helped the Eagles to a 0.48 goals against average
this season.
Offense:
(Nov. 12) 11th-ranked Emory University's Meghan
McMahon scored the game-winning goal during the Eagles'
1-0 victory over 13th-ranked Hardin-Simmons University (Texas) in
the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The freshman scored
the match's lone goal in the 73rd minute, just 46 second after she
entered the game. After taking a cross inside the box, she
was able to shoot the ball past the Cowgirls' All-American
goalkeeper and into the net for her second game winner of the
season. It was McMahon's third goal of the campaign, allowing
Emory to advance to the round of 16 for the sixth time in school
history and the first time since 2000.
Defense:
(Nov. 12) Defender Grace Lam led 11th-ranked Emory
University to a record-setting 1-0 victory in the Eagles' NCAA
Tournament second round match against 13th-ranked Hardin-Simmons
University (Texas). Lam helped the Eagles defense match an
NCAA Championship record by holding the Cowgirls, who entered the
match with the 22nd-ranked scoring offense in the nation, without a
shot on goal throughout the contest, and to just one shot
overall. With 11 minutes remaining, the junior All-University
Athletic Association first team honoreemade a game-saving play,
blocking the Cowgirls' only shot of the match with a slide tackle,
while the Eagles' goalkeeper was out of position. Had Lam not
made the stop, the game would have likely been headed to
overtime. She has led an Eagles defense that has recorded 13
shutouts this season and a 0.41 goals against average, the
11th-lowest mark in the Nation.
Offense:
(Nov. 5) Forward Joyce Lam matched an Emory
University single-season record with her 11th assist of the season
during the Eagles' 1-0 win over Carnegie Mellon University
(Pa.). Lam assisted on the only goal of the match, her fourth
game-winning assist of the season. The junior finishes the
regular season with five goals and 11 assists for 21 points, all
career bests, and her three assists in University Athletic
Association (UAA) games tie her for the Association lead. Lam
has led the Eagles, ranked 11th in the Nation, to a 15-1-2 record
this season and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Defense:
(Nov. 5) Emory University's Emily Fedeles recorded
a season-best six saves during the Eagles' 1-0 shutout win over
Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.). The shutout was Fedeles'
eighth of the season and third in University Athletic Association
(UAA) matches, as the senior improved to 10-1-2 in 2007. She
lowered her school-record goals against average to 0.23, the
fifth-lowest mark in the Nation this season. Earlier in the
week, Fedeles was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first
team, and will be placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America
ballot. The Eagles finished the 2007 regular season with a
15-1-2 record and have received a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Offense:
(Oct. 29) Maya Vankineni scored the game-winning
goals in both of Emory University's wins last week, helping the
Eagles to a 2-0-1 record over three games. Vankineni scored
the game-winner in the 63rd minute against Maryville College
(Tenn.), the fifth-ranked team in the South Region, leading Emory
to a 2-0 victory. She then broke a 1-1 tie with Brandeis
University (Mass.), scoring the eventual game-winner in the 68th
minute of the match. In a scoreless tie against New York
University, the junior led all players with two shots on goal,
despite playing a woman short for the majority of the game.
Vankineni led the Eagles with eight shots during the week, each of
which was on goal. She is second on the squad this season
with five goals and third with six assists, good for 16
points. Vankineni has helped the Eagles to a 14-1-2 record
this year.
Defense:
(Oct. 29) Emory University defenders Whitney
Briggs and Leanna Racine helped the
Eagles hold opponents to just one goal over three games last
week. The duo's most impressive performance came during the
Eagles' scoreless tie with New York University, when the Eagles
were forced to play a defender short due to a red card.
Briggs and Racine played the entirety of the match, making a number
of plays to preserve the shutout and helped Emory hold a 5-1 shot
advantage during the overtime frames. Briggs played all 290
minutes of Emory soccer during the week, leading the Eagles to a
shutout win over Maryville College (Tenn.) and a 2-1 win over
Brandeis University (Mass.). Despite missing the Maryville
game, Racine played over 180 minutes of soccer in the Emory
backfield during the week. The pair held opponents to just 10
shots on goal, as the Eagles combined for a 0.31 goals against
average during the three matches.
Offense:
(Oct. 22) Emory University's Maya Vankineni scored
the lone goal in a 1-0 Eagles' win over Birmingham Southern College
(Ala.). Vankineni scored in the 58th minute of the match,
giving Emory a lead it would hold for the remainder of the
game. The junior had scored three goals and six assists this
season for 12 points, the fourth-best total on the team this
year. The goal also marked the first game-winner of
Vankineni's career. The midfielder had helped the Eagles,
ranked 11th in the Nation, to a 12-1-1 record this season.
Defense:
(Oct. 22) Goalkeeper Emily Fedeles recorded her
fifth shutout of the season for 11th-ranked Emory University,
leading the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Birmingham Southern
College (Ala.) last week. Fedeles played all 90 minutes of
the game in goal, converting four saves, including one in the final
second of the match to secure the victory for Emory. The
senior began the week ranked fifth in the Nation in goals against
average, and since has lowered it to a University Athletic
Association leading 0.23 this season. Fedeles has led the
Eagles to a 12-1-1 record during the 2007 campaign.
Offense:
(Oct. 15) Freshman Meghan McMahon of Emory
University recorded the game-winning goal for the Eagles against
Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), helping the Eagles to a 2-0
victory. McMahon gave the Eagles an early lead, scoring in
the eighth minute of the game. The goal was the midfielder's
second in the last three Emory games. McMahon also took one
of the four Emory shots on goal during a 1-0 loss to the University
of Rochester (N.Y.). The Eagles, ranked seventh in the
Nation, are 11-1-1 during the 2007 campaign.
Defense:
(Oct. 15) Emory University's Leanna Racine played
the majority of two University Athletic Association (UAA) matches
this weekend, helping the Emory defense hold opponents to one goal
in 180 minutes. Against Case Western Reserve University
(Ohio), Racine played over 65 minutes of shutout soccer, holding
the Spartans to four shots on goal in a 2-0 Emory win. The
junior returned on Sunday to play the entirety of a 1-0 loss to the
University of Rochester (N.Y.), helping to hold the Spartans to
five shots on goal. Racine has started all 13 games this
season, helping the Eagles to a 0.52 team goals against average and
a 11-1-1 record.
Offense:
(Oct. 8) Jamie English, forward for the
eighth-ranked Emory University women's soccer team, scored the
‘golden goal' in a 3-2 double overtime upset victory over
fourth-ranked Washington University (Mo.). With just four
minutes remaining in the match, English broke away from the Bears'
defense after a pass from Alexa Wahr, advancing unimpeded into the
Washington box and launching a shot past the goalkeeper to give
Emory the victory. The goal was the senior's second of the
day, as she scored in the sixth minute of the match as well.
English is the University Athletic Association (UAA) leader with 10
goals and 22 points this season, both career bests. She has
led the Eagles to a 10-0-1 record this season, including a 1-0-1
record in UAA games, good for second-place in the Association.
Defense:
(Oct. 8) Emory University defender Grace Lam
helped the Eagles to a 2-0-0 record last week, including a 7-0
shutout win over Agnes Scott College (Ga.) and a 3-2 double
overtime victory over fourth-ranked University Athletic Association
(UAA) rival Washington University (Mo.). Lam played over 61
shutout minutes against Agnes Scott, scoring two goals during the
game as well. The junior played all 105:53 minutes against
Washington University, making a number of dynamic defensive plays
to help the Eagles to their first Association victory of the
season. Lam has scored four goals for Emory this season, and
helped the Eagles to a 0.52 team goals against average, the
second-lowest in the UAA. The Eagles are 10-0-1 this season
and 1-0-1 in UAA games, good for second-place in the Association.
Offense:
(Oct. 1) Emory University's Joyce Lam took two of
the Eagles' ten shots in a 0-0 scoreless tie against University
Athletic Association rival University of Chicago (Ill.). This
season, Lam leads all Eagles with seven assists, and is second on
the team with four goals and 15 points. The junior has helped
Emory outscore its opponents 34-4, and 24-1 over the last five
games. The Eagles hold a 9-0-1 record, the best start in the
program's history.
Defense:
(Oct. 1) Emory University's Emily Fedeles recorded
110 shutout minutes in goal during the Eagles' scoreless tie with
the University of Chicago (Ill.). Fedeles played the entire
game, including both overtime periods, in goal for Emory,
converting five saves during the contest. The senior
goalkeeper has not allowed a goal in 361 minutes this year, and
holds a 3-0-1 with three shutouts. The Eagles, ranked fourth
in the nation, hold an 8-0-1 record on the 2007 campaign.
Offense:
(Sept. 24) Emory University's Alexa Wahr equaled
her season-best with four points against Reinhardt College (Ga.)
last weekend. The junior recorded the game-winning goal and
two assists against Reinhardt, helping Emory to a 4-0 victory over
the NAIA opponent. Wahr now has three goals and four assists
this season for 10 points, the third-most by an Emory player this
season. The midfielder's contributions have helped
eighth-ranked Emory to an 8-0-0 record, the second-best start in
school history.
Defense:
(Sept. 24) Emory University senior goalkeeper Emily
Fedeles picked up her third victory of the season in a
shutout win over Reinhardt College (Ga.). Fedeles played all
90 minutes in goal against Reinhardt, converting two saves in the
4-0 shutout win over the NAIA opponent. Fedeles, who has won
each of her three starts, recorded her second shutout of the
campaign and has now played over 251 minutes this season without
allowing a goal. Emory, ranked eighth in the nation, has
opened the 2007 season with an 8-0-0 record.
Offense:
(Sept. 17) Emory University's Jamie English scored
five goals and added one assist over two games to lead the Eagles
in scoring last week. English registered the first hat trick
of her career, scoring goals in the 22nd, 23rd and 62nd minute, and
assisted on another goal, as the Eagles routed the University of
the South (Tenn.) 9-0. The senior also recorded two go-ahead
goals, including the game winner, in a 3-2 Emory win over Rhodes
College (Tenn.). English leads all Emory players with six
goals and 13 points during the 2007 campaign. The forward has
helped 25th-ranked Emory to just the third 6-0-0 start in the
program's history.
Defense:
(Sept. 17) Emory University defender Whitney
Briggs helped to anchor an Eagles' defense that recorded
two wins in as many games last week, including a shutout, and a
team goals against average of 1.00. The senior led Emory to a
9-0 victory over the University of the South (Tenn.), giving the
Eagles their fourth shutout of the year. Briggs also played
the entirety of a 3-2 win over 17th-ranked Rhodes College (Tenn.)
in the backfield, helping Emory to a come-from-behind
victory. Since she made the transition from forward to
defense after the first game of the season, Emory has outshot
opponents 98-23, recorded three shutouts and registered a goals
against average of 0.59. Briggs' performance has helped the
Eagles to a 6-0-0 record in 2007.
Offense:
(Sept. 10) Emory University midfielder Alexa Wahr
scored her first two goals of the season against Guilford College
(N. Car.), including the game winner, helping the Eagles to a 3-1
win over the Quakers. Wahr scored the opening goal of the
game in the first half to give the Eagles an early lead.
After Guilford tied the game, the junior struck again, scoring the
game-winning goal in the 83rd minute. The two-goal game was
the first of Wahr's career. Her performance against the
Quakers helped the Eagles to a 4-0-0 start to the 2007
campaign.
Defense:
(Sept. 10) Emory University goalkeeper Sarah
Wilkerson allowed just one goal in two games for the
Eagles last week. Against Lynchburg College (Va.), the junior
played 95:25 minutes of shutout soccer, recording her second
shutout in as many games, and leading the Eagles to a 1-0 overtime
victory. Against Guilford College (N. Car.) the following
day, Wilkerson allowed one goal, converting on six saves and
helping Emory to a 3-1 win. She improved her record to 3-0-0
this season with two shutouts and a 0.33 goals against
average. With Wilkerson's contributions in goal, the Eagles
have opened their season with a 4-0-0 record.
Offense:
(Sept. 4) Emory University freshman Stephanie de
Souza picked up a goal and an assist over her first two
games as an Eagle, helping Emory to wins in each of the team's
first two games. Playing against Maryville University (Mo.)
at the Nike Kick-Off Classic, de Souza recorded a goal, and
assisted on another, as the Eagles soared to a 2-0 victory.
Defense:
(Sept. 4) Emory University defender Grace Lam
helped the Eagles to two shutout victories last weekend.
Against Mississippi College, Lam anchored a defense that held the
Lady Choctaws to just one shot during the game. The following
day, the junior scored a goal off a corner kick, and helped the
Eagles shut out Maryville University (Mo.). Lam's performance
helped the Eagles to a 2-0-0 start to their 2007 campaign.
