The Emory University Women's Soccer team completed one of the
best seasons in the program's history in 2007, recording the
second-highest win total in the program's history, and advancing to
the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since
2000. The Eagles finished the season ranked 14th in the
nation, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA).
The Eagles finished the 2007 season with a 16-2-2 record, second
only to Emory's 17-1-1 campaign during the 2001 season. The
Eagles' play was marked by one of the strongest defenses in the
nation, as Emory finished the year ranked 12th in the nation in
goals against average (0.48), 19th in the nation in shutout
percentage (0.65), and 45th in the nation in team save percentage
(0.848). Emory balanced their defense with a solid offense as
well, recording 14-different goal scorers on the campaign, and
outscoring opponents 47-10 on the season.
During the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, the
Eagles matched a program best by advancing to the sectional round
of competition. Emory was one of 60 teams selected to the
NCAA Tournament, and one of just four teams in the field to receive
a first-round bye. In its second-round match, Emory defeated
Hardin-Simmons University (Texas) 1-0, on a goal by freshman
Meghan McMahon, and a shutout by the Emory
defense, which matching an NCAA championship record by not allowing
a shot on goal. In the team's next match, Emory battled host
institution Lynchburg College (Va.), as a Jamie
English goal sent the game into overtime. However,
the Eagles allowed a ‘golden goal' in the second overtime
period, ending their tournament run.
Emory registered a 4-1-2 record in University Athletic Association
(UAA) competition, finishing the season tied for second place in
the conference, and just one point shy of the UAA title. The
season marked the 11th time the Eagles have finished second or
better in the conference, since UAA competition began in 1987.
During the season, Emory went 3-0 against teams ranked by the NSCAA
when the Eagles faced them. On September 15th, Emory defeated
Rhodes College (Tenn.), then ranked 17th in the nation, 3-2, in
large part due to a two-goal match for Jamie English. English
scored another pair of goals, including the ‘golden goal'
during Emory's 3-2 double-overtime win over then-fourth ranked
Washington University (Mo.). The Eagles' win over
Hardin-Simmons came when the Cowgirls were the 13th-ranked team in
the country.
A number of Eagles had a spectacular season in 2007. Senior
forward Jamie English led the team with 11 goals and 27 points,
later being named to the all-UAA first team. Senior
goalkeeper Emily Fedeles set a school record and
finished the season ranked eighth in the nation in goals against
average (0.33), and 10th in the nation in save percentage (0.894),
and was also named to the all-UAA first team. Junior
third-team all-America defender Grace Lam anchored
Emory's stalwart defense, and rounded out the trio of Eagles to
receive a nod to the all-UAA first team. Junior forward
Joyce Lam recorded 11 assists during the season,
setting matching the school record set by Carrie Eckenhoff in 2001,
and finished the year ranked 34th in the nation in assists per game
(0.58).
