(Nov. 17) Emory University's Alexa Wahr
scored two goals during the Eagles' two NCAA Tournament matches
last weekend. Both of Wahr's scores came during Emory's 3-0
victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland, as the senior scored
on a penalty kick in the seventh minute, and added a late goal in
the 90th minute. She added two shots, one of which was on
goal, during the Eagles' 1-0 loss to Lynchburg College on
Sunday. Wahr, an all-UAA First Team selection, finished her
2008 season with four goals and two assists for 10 points, helping
Emory to a 16-4-1 record during the campaign.
Defense
(Nov. 17) Emory defender Grace Lam played
all 180 minutes of the Eagles' two NCAA Tournament matches last
weekend. Lam held Emory's opponents to one goal on 13 shots
over the two games, including just three shots on goal. The
senior all-UAA First Team selection helped hold St. Mary's College
of Maryland to just two shots, none on goal, during the Eagles' 3-0
first round victory on Saturday, the team's 11th shutout of the
season. Lam has paced an Emory defense that has recorded an
0.55 goals-against average this season, helping the squad to a
16-4-1 record for the 2008 campaign.
Offense
(Nov. 10) Emory University's Whitney
Briggs scored the ‘golden goal' in the Eagles'
University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship-clinching win
over Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.). With her team needing
a victory to keep their hopes for a UAA Championship alive, Briggs
scored her sixth goal of the season with 4:41 remaining in the
second overtime period, giving the Eagles a 1-0 victory. The
‘golden goal' was the first of her Emory career (the third by
an Eagle this season), and the senior's fourth game-winning goal of
the campaign. Briggs leads all UAA scorers with three
game-winning goals in conference play this season. Her play
helped the Eagles to their fifth UAA Championship in the history of
the program.
Defense
(Nov. 10) Emory University goalkeeper Sarah
Wilkerson played over 105 minutes of shutout soccer
against Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.), guiding the Eagles to a
1-0 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship clinching
victory. Wilkerson faced five shots during the match,
converting saves on the Tartans' two shots on goal, and
withstanding six Carnegie Mellon corner kicks. She finished
the regular season leading all UAA goalkeepers with a 0.55
goals-against average, and eight shutouts. Wilkerson's play
has helped the Eagles to a 15-3-1 overall record, and their first
UAA Championship since the 2004 season.
Offense
(Nov. 3) Emory University's Olivia
Lezanski recorded a game-winning goal and an assist during
the Eagles two victories over University Athletic Association (UAA)
opponents last weekend. Against Brandeis University on
Friday, Lezanski notched her third assist of the season on a goal
in the 72nd minute, securing the Eagles' 3-1 victory. On
Sunday against New York University, the junior midfielder recorded
her first game-winning goal as an Eagle, scoring in the 57th minute
to lift the Eagles to a 4-1 win. Lezanski has scored two
goals and three assists this season for seven points, helping the
Eagles to a 14-3-1 (5-1-0 UAA) record this season.
(Nov. 3) Emory University senior Whitney Briggs scored two goals, including the game-winner, during the Eagles' 3-1 victory over Brandeis University on Friday. Briggs notched her first goal of the match, the eventual game-winning goal, in the 67th minute off a pass from Alexa Wahr. Less than six minutes later, the forward secured the victory with her second goal of the game, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Briggs is second on the team with five goals, 12 points and three game-winning goals this season, and is third in the UAA with three goals and seven points in conference play. Her play has helped the Eagles to a 14-3-1 (5-1-0 UAA) record this season.
Defense
(Nov. 3) Emory University's Claire Rubel
led the Eagles' backline during a pair of University Athletic
Association (UAA) victories last weekend. Rubel played the
entire second half of the Eagles' 3-1 win over Brandeis University
on Friday, holding the Judges scoreless while she was in the match
and allowing Emory to come from behind for the victory. The
freshman also played the entirety of the Eagles' 4-1 win over New
York University on Sunday. For the 135 minutes that Rubel
played over the weekend, the Emory defense allowed just one goal on
14 shots. Rubel's play helped the Eagles secure second-place
in the UAA, and improve to 14-3-1 overall this season.
Offense
(Oct. 20) Emory University's Shayna Bryan
scored three goals, including two game-winning goals, during three
Eagles' victories last week. Bryan scored the ‘golden
goal' in the Eagles 1-0 double overtime victory over the
18th-ranked University of Rochester on Sunday. The junior
also scored the game-winning goal in Emory's match against
UAA-opponent Case Western Reserve University, leading her team to a
3-1 victory. Bryan added a goal earlier in the week, scoring
in the 14th minute during the Eagles 6-0 win over Oglethorpe
University. The forward leads the squad with eight goals and
19 points this season, and is second among all UAA players with
three goals and seven points in conference play. Bryan has
helped the 23rd-ranked Eagles to a 3-1-0 record in UAA matches,
good for second-place in the conference.
Defense
(Oct. 20) Emory University's Grace Lam
led the Eagles defense to a pair of shutouts over three games this
past week. Lam and the Emory backline allowed just one goal
through three games, all victories, while recording shutouts over
Oglethorpe University and the 18th-ranked University of Rochester,
good for a 0.32 team goals-against average. The senior and
2007 all-American helped hold opponents to just 14 shots over the
three contests, only eight of which were on goal. Lam also
scored two goals of her own during the week, giving her three this
season. The senior's performance helped the 23rd-ranked
Eagles improve to 12-2-1 this season, including a 3-1-0 mark in UAA
matches.
Offense & Defense
(Oct. 6) Emory University's Whitney Briggs scored
the game-winning goal, and made two late defender saves, to lift
the 12th-ranked Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the University of
Chicago (Ill.). Briggs opened the game at forward, and
assisted on the match's opening goal in the ninth minute.
Early in the second half, the senior broke a 1-1 tie with the
eventual game-winning goal, her first of the season, in the 52nd
minute. Briggs made the shift from forward to the backline
for the final 10 minutes of play, and secured the Eagles' with two
minutes remaining, as the co-captain made a pair of defender saves
on the goal line to avert the Maroon's scoring threat.
Briggs' play led the Eagles to a win in the squad's first UAA match
of the season, as Emory improved to 9-1-1 overall this season.
Offense
(Sep. 29) Emory University's Joyce Lam scored the
game-winning goal in each of the Eagles' two wins last week.
On Tuesday, Lam notched her second goal of the season to give the
Eagles a 2-0 lead over Brewton Parker College (Ga.), en route to a
6-1 Emory win. The senior forward drove the Eagles to a 1-0,
double-overtime victory with a ‘golden goal' against Berry
College (Ga.), the ninth-ranked team in the NAIA, scoring in the
104th minute of the match. Lam has scored three goals this
season for six points, the third-best total on the team.
Emory, ranked 19th in Division III, improved to 8-1-1 this season
with the pair of wins.
Defense
(Sep. 29) Whitney Briggs played over 148 scoreless
minutes for the Emory University backfield, helping the squad to a
pair of victories during the week. Briggs played all 103:21
minutes of the Eagles' 1-0 double-overtime victory over Berry
College (Ga.), holding the NAIA's ninth-ranked Lady Vikings to just
four shots on goal. The senior also played the first half of
the Eagles 6-1 win over Brewton Parker College (Ga.), holding the
Lady Barons without a shot, before being rested for the second
half. With Briggs on the field last week, Emory's defense
allowed opponents just five shots, four of which were on
goal. The Eagles, ranked 19th in the Nation, raised their
record to 8-1-1 in 2008.
Offense
(Sep. 15) Emory University's Shayna Bryan recorded
a goal and an assist during the Eagles' 2-1 victory over
Mississippi College on Saturday. Bryan scored the first goal
of the match in 54th-minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
After Mississippi tied the match later in the half, the junior
forward would assist on the eventual game-winning goal in the
84th-minute, helping the Eagles to a victory. Bryan leads the
Eagles with three goals and two assists for eight points this
season. Emory, ranked ninth in the Nation, is 6-1-1 on the
campaign.

(Sep. 8) Emory University's Maya
Vankineni scored the game-winning goal during the Eagles'
1-0 victory over DePauw University (Ind.). Vankineni's goal,
her first of the season, came off a penalty kick during the 29th
minute of the match, giving the Eagles a lead they would hold for
the remainder of the contest. The score marked the senior's
fifth game-winning goal during the last two seasons, the most by an
Eagle during that stretch. Vankineni's contributions helped
the 12th-ranked Eagles improve to 4-0-1 on the campaign.
Defense
(Sep. 8) Emory University goalkeeper Sarah
Wilkerson played 245 shutout minutes in goal over three
games last week. On Saturday, Wilkerson converted a
season-best eight saves during a scoreless tie against
eighth-ranked Wittenberg University (Ohio). The senior
followed that performance with another shutout on Sunday, making
five saves during the Eagles' 1-0 win over DePauw University
(Ind.). Wilkerson also picked up a victory against Agnes
Scott College (Ga.), holding her opponent scoreless in her 45
minutes of play. She has not allowed a goal in 425 minutes
this season, recording 15 saves and four shutouts, for a 4-0-1
record this year. Emory, ranked 12th in the nation, is 4-0-1
this season.
Offense
(Sep. 2) Emory University's Annie Horn led the
Eagles with two goals scored over two games last weekend.
Horn scored a late goal against Guilford College (N.C.) to help
cement a 4-0 Emory win over the Quakers. The following day, during
a 2-0 Emory win over Methodist University (N.C.), the senior scored
her second goal of the season to secure the victory for
Emory. The two goals scored for Horn were the first two of
her Emory career, as she led the 14th-ranked Eagles to a 2-0-0
record during the first weekend of the 2008 season.
Defense
(Sep. 2) Emory University defender Grace Lam led
an Emory defense that held its two opponents scoreless, and to a
combined four shots, last weekend. During a 4-0 win over
Guilford College (N.C.), Lam and the Emory backfield restricted
Guilford to one shot. The 2007 all-American also scored her
first goal of the season during the game. Against Methodist
University (N.C.), Lam anchored an Eagles' defense that held
Methodist to just three shots, only one of which was on goal.
The senior played all 180 minutes of Emory soccer during the
weekend, as the 14th-ranked Eagles opened the year with a 2-0-0
record.
