WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSISTANT COACH JASON LOWE TAKES POSITION AT ALABAMA

(June 4) - Jason Lowe, an assistant coach with the Emory women's soccer team the past two seasons, has resigned his position at the school to take an assistant coaching post at the University of Alabama.

During his two campaigns with the Eagles, Lowe helped the program to an impressive 32-6-3 won-lost mark that included a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament.  In 2008, Emory also shared for the University Athletic Association championship, the Eagles first conference crown since 2004.

Serving as Emory's goalkeeper coach, Lowe guided first-year starter Sarah Wilkinson to a NSCAA/ ADIDAS All-South Region selection in 2008. Wilkerson's 0.544 overall GAA was the 23rd-lowest in Division III in 2008, and the eighth-lowest single season average in school history. She finished with a record of 16-4-1 overall and earned a berth on the All-UAA Team.
During his first season with the Eagles, he helped then-senior goalkeeper Emily Fedeles to First Team All-UAA honors, an eighth-ranking nationally in goals against average (0.33) and a tenth-national ranking in save percentage (0.894).

"While we are sorry to see Jason leave, we are excited for this opportunity for him to advance his career," said Emory head coach Sue Patberg.  Jason did a great job in all aspects of the program for us and I know that he is going to make many outstanding contributions at Alabama."

EMORY'S LAM, WAHR, BRIGGS AND WILKERSON EARN SPOTS ON THE NSCAA/ ADIDAS ALL-SOUTH REGION SQUAD

(Dec. 12) For the third-consecutive year, the 22nd-ranked Emory University placed four players on the NSCAA/ adidas NCAA Division III Women's Soccer All-South Region Teams, as seniors Grace Lam, Alexa Wahr, and Whitney Briggs were named to the First Team, and Sarah Wilkerson earned a spot on the Second Team.

It marks the fourth time in the team's history that the squad has produced three All-Region First Team selections, a program record.  It is also the second-consecutive year the Eagles have placed three players on the First Team, the second time the program has achieved the feat (Emory also had three All-South First Team selections in 2000 and 2001).

Grace Lam anchored an Emory backline that allowed the Eagles outshoot opponents 375-135, and held opposing teams to a .0553 goals-against average, the 23rd-lowest in Division III.  In addition, she added four goals during the season for eight points.  Lam was one of four players to start all 21 games for Emory in 2008.  Earlier, Lam became the fourth member in the history of the Emory Women's Soccer program to be a two-time all-American, as the senior was named to NSCAA/ Adidas All-America Third Team for the second-straight season and also earned all-University Athletic Association (UAA) First Team honors for the second-consecutive season.  This is the second-consecutive year that Lam has been named to the all-region first team.

Alexa Wahr, a midfielder, finished the season with four goals and two assists for 10 points, tied for the fifth-best total on the team.  Both of Wahr's assists came on game-winning goals in UAA contests.  She recorded a two-goal game during Emory's 3-0 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  Wahr was also named to the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) First Team.  This is her second-consecutive all-region first team honor.

Earlier in the year, Whitney Briggs became the third player in the history of the Emory Women's Soccer Team to be named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year.  She scored six goals and two assists for 14 points during the campaign, the second-best total on the team, including a team-best four game-winning goals.  Defensively, the co-captain helped lead an Emory backfield that allowed the Eagles outshoot opponents 375-135, and held opposing teams to a .0553 goals-against average, the 23rd-lowest in Division III.  Briggs' season was highlighted by her ‘golden goal' in the second overtime period of Emory's season finale against Carnegie Mellon University, which lifted the Eagles to a share of their fifth UAA Championship.  Briggs finished her three-year Emory career with 13 goals and six assists for 32 points.  This is her first all-Region honor.

In her first season as the Eagles' full-time starting goalkeeper, Sarah Wilkerson started all 21 games in goal for Emory, and played all but 135 minutes at the position.  Wilkerson's 0.544 overall GAA was the 23rd-lowest in Division III in 2008, and the eighth-lowest single season average in school history.  Her 16 wins (16-4-1 overall record) are the second highest single season total in school history, and Wilkerson's nine shutouts during the campaign are the third-most.  Earlier, Wilkerson was named to the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) First Team.  This is her first all-region selection.

Emory finished the 2008 season with a 16-4-1 record, after winning the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

EMORY'S GRACE LAM NAMED TO THE NSCAA/ ADIDAS WOMEN'S SOCCER ALL-AMERICA TEAM

(Dec. 8) Emory University's Grace Lam became the fourth two-time all-American in the history of the Women's Soccer Program, as the senior was named to the NSCAA/ Adidas NCAA Division III All-America Third Team for the second consecutive year.

Lam joins former Eagles Diana Spock (1993, 1995), Annie Schenck (2000, 2001), and Andrea Pawliczek (2000, 2001) as Emory's two-time all-America honorees.  She is one of 12 honorees on this year's  all-America team to have been honored in a previous year.

Lam anchored an Emory University defense that allowed a 0.553 goals-against average during the season, the 23rd-lowest total in Division III in 2008.  She started all 21 of Emory's games during the season, scoring four goals during the season for eight points.

Earlier in the season, Lam was named to the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) first team for the second-consecutive year, and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team for her performances both in the classroom and on the pitch.

The Eagles finished the 2008 season with a 16-4-1, including a UAA Championship and a trip to the round of 32 in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER ELIMINATED FROM THE NCAA TOURNAMENT WITH 1-0 LOSS TO LYNCHBURG

(Nov. 16) Emory University's run in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament ended on Sunday, as the Eagles suffered a 1-0 loss to third-ranked Lynchburg College (Va.).

The loss marks the second-consecutive year that Lynchburg has taken advantage of a home match to eliminate the Eagles from National Title contention.  Last season, the Hornets defeated the Eagles 2-1 in two overtime periods during the NCAA's round of 16.

After a scoreless first half, Lynchburg's Katie Santos scored the eventual game-winning goal, after Betsy Kwiatowski beat the Emory defender to the end line, and subsequently fed Santos for the score.

Emory finished the match holding a 14-11 advantage in shots, and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.  However, the Eagles were unable to take advantage of the opportunities throughout the match.

Emory will end its 2008 season with a 16-4-1 overall record, while Lynchburg remained undefeated, improving to 21-0-3.  The Hornets will advance to the round of 16, where they will face Ithaca College.

EMORY ADVANCES IN NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT WITH A 3-0 WIN OVER ST. MARY'S

(Nov. 15) The Emory University Women's Soccer team was forced to battle both a tough St. Mary's College of Maryland squad and bad weather during its NCAA Tournament First Round match on in Lynchburg, VA on Saturday, but the Eagles came out the other side with a 3-0 victory over the Seahawks.

The Eagles did not let a steady rainfall early in the match slow them down, as the team struck with two quick goals.  Emory's first score came in the fifth minute of the game, as Talia Dweck was able to recover a rebound off her own shot, and return a shot to give the Eagles' a 1-0 lead at the 4:17 mark.  The goal was the second of the year for Dweck.

Just under two minutes later, a Seahawks foul in their own box resulted in an Alexa Wahr penalty kick for Emory.  Wahr put a left-footed shot into the left corner of the net, while the St. Mary's goalkeeper dove to the right, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead on her third score of the campaign.

Although Emory would not score for the rest of the first half, the team continued to play dominate soccer throughout, outshooting the Seahawks 10-1 and taking six corner kicks to St. Mary's one.  The Eagles had a chance to extend the lead in the 36th minute, as Olivia Lezanski found St. Mary's goalkeeper out of position, but her ensuing shot hit the post.

After the rain subsided as the first half went on, it would pick up again at about the 55th minute of the match.  The Emory defense, however, would remain consistent throughout the second frame of the match.  The Eagles' backline held St. Mary's to just one shot in the second half, providing the opportunity for the Emory offense to register nine shots, en route to the squad's 11th shutout of the season.

Wahr would add on her second goal of the match in the final minute of play, her fourth of the year, off an assist from UAA Player of the Year Whitney Briggs, to secure the victory for Emory.

Emory goalkeeper Sarah Wilkerson played the entirety of the match in goal, recording her ninth individual shutout of the campaign.  The senior and all-UAA first team honoree did not need to make a save to earn the victory.

With the win, Emory, the 2008 UAA Champions, improved to 16-3-1 on the season and to 6-8-3 all time in NCAA Tournament play.  St. Mary's, which made its first NCAA Tournament appearance this season, will end its year with a 12-3-3 overall record.

The victory sets up a chance for redemption for the Eagles, who will advance to face host school Lynchburg College (Va.) in the second round of the tournament.  Lynchburg, 20-0-3 this season and ranked third in Division III, eliminated Emory from the 2007 NCAA Tournament in the round of 16 with a 2-1 double overtime win last season.

Lynchburg advanced earlier in the day with a 3-0 victory over Maryville College (Tenn.).  The Eagles and the Hornets will play for the right to move on to the round of 16 at 2:00 PM on Sunday (please note the time change from earlier) .

BRIGGS NAMED UAA WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

(Nov. 14) Emory University's Whitney Briggs highlighted a group Eagles earning all-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors, as the senior was named the UAA Women's Soccer Player of the Year.  In addition to Briggs, Grace Lam, Alexa Wahr, and Sarah Wilkerson earned spots on the all-UAA first team, while Talia Dweck and Kerri Lydon earned honorable mentions.

This season marks just the fourth time in the program's history, and the first time since the 2000 season, that four or more players have been selected to the all-UAA first team.

Briggs became the third player in the history of the Emory Women's Soccer Team to be named the UAA Player of the Year, joining Andrea Pawliczek (2000) and Diana Spock (1994).  The senior was one of the most versatile players in the UAA during the season, playing aggressively on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.  She finished the season leading all UAA players with three game-winning goals in conference play, in addition to ranking second in the conference with four UAA goals and third with nine points.  Overall, Briggs scored six goals and two assists for 14 points during the campaign, the second-best total on the team, including a team-best four game-winning goals, while helping Emory record a 0.56 goals-against average.

Briggs' season was highlighted by her ‘golden goal' in the second overtime period of Emory's season finale against Carnegie Mellon University, which lifted the Eagles to a share of their fifth UAA Championship.  She also earned a spot on the all-UAA first team, marking the second conference honor of her career, following her selection to the second team in 2007.

Lam earned her third all-UAA honor in as many seasons with the Eagles, and her second-straight first team selection.  The senior defender was a key part of the Emory defense, which recorded a 0.56 goals-against average and 10 shutouts during the season.  In UAA matches, Lam scored two goals, while helping the Eagles outscore their UAA foes 14-6 and outshoot them, 107-70.

Wahr paced the Eagles from the midfield position during UAA play, scoring all of her points during the season, two goals and two assists, in UAA matches.  She earned her third all-UAA honor, after being named to the second team in 2007, and an honorable mention in 2006.

In her first season as the Eagles' full-time starter in goal, Wilkerson started all 19 Emory games and recorded a UAA-low 0.55 goals-against average, while leading the conference with eight shutouts during the season.  In UAA matches, she was 6-1-0 with two shutouts and a 0.82 goals-against average.  This was the first postseason honor of Wilkerson's Emory career.

Dweck finished the regular season leading all Emory players with seven assists.  Her four assists in UAA matches tied her for the lead among all players in the conference.  Dweck has scored a total of nine points during the season.  This was the first postseason honor of her career.

Lydon started all 19 games during the season for Emory, scoring two goals and five assists for nine points, the fourth-best total on the team.  In UAA play, the senior scored one assist, and helped the squad on the defensive side of the ball as well.  This is the first postseason honor of Lydon's career.

The Eagles won the fifth UAA Championship in school history during the 2008 season, and the first since the 2004 season.  Emory, which finished the regular season with a 15-3-1 record, will take on St. Mary's College of Maryland in their NCAA Tournament first round match on Saturday at 1:30 PM.

EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER HEADS TO LYNCHBURG, VA FOR THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

(Nov. 13) The Emory University Women's Soccer team will begin its postseason play on Saturday, as the Eagles will travel to Lynchburg, VA to face St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks at 1:30 PM in a first-round matchup.

Also on Saturday, Maryville College (17-3-1) will face third-ranked Lynchburg College (19-0-3) at 11:00 AM in a first-round match.  The winners of the two matches will face each other on Sunday at 1:00 PM, for the right to advance to the round of 16.

Emory will enter the weekend with a 15-3-1 overall record, and a 6-3-1 record in matches away from the Woodruff Physical Education Center.  The Eagles received votes in the last NSCAA National poll, and were ranked fifth in the South Region poll.  Emory is 5-8-3 all time in NCAA Tournament matches, advancing on a shootout in one of the three ties.  The Eagles have won at least one game in each of their last five appearances in the tournament, advancing as far as the round of 16 three times.

St. Mary's College of Maryland earned a ‘Pool A' berth into the NCAA Tournament as the winners of the Capital Athletic Conference title, and will be making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  The Seahawks are 12-2-3 this season, including a 5-1-2 mark away from home.  St. Mary's is ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region poll.  The two teams have never played before.

Admission to the NCAA Tournament matches in Lynchburg, VA will be $6 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and $2 for children ages 3-12.

EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER CROWNED THE CO-UAA CHAMPION WITH WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

(Nov. 8) With Washington University's (Mo.) 1-0 loss to the University of Chicago (Ill.), the Emory University Women's Soccer team has earned its fifth University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in the history of the program.

The Eagles finished tied with Washington in conference play, each with identical 6-1-0 records.  According to the UAA tiebreaking procedures, the two teams will be crowned co-champions, although the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament will be awarded to the Bears, based on their win over the Eagles earlier in the season.

Emory entered the final day of the regular season needing a win over Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.), combined with a Washington University loss to Chicago, in order to create a tie at the top of the UAA standings.  After the Eagles won 1-0 in double overtime, Chicago scored a goal late in the second-half to help Emory to a share of the title.

This season marks the fifth time the Eagles have won the UAA Championship since conference play began during the 1987 season, and the first time the Eagles have won the conference since 2004.  It is also the first conference title for the squad under head coach Sue Patberg.

It also marked the first time since 2004 that the conference has had co-champions, when, similar to this season, Washington and Emory finished with identical 6-1-0 records.

The Emory women's soccer team will join the men's team as UAA Soccer Champions, just the second time in school history that both have won the conference championship in the same season (1998).

The Eagles will now await the announcement of the ‘Pool C' bids to the NCAA Tournament, awarded to teams that did not receive an automatic bid from their conference.  The bids and tournament bracket will be announced on Monday, November 10th at noon, with a selection show on NCAA.com.

BRIGGS NOTCHES THE ‘GOLDEN GOAL' IN EMORY'S 1-0 DOUBLE-OVERTIME VICTORY OVER CARNEGIE MELLON

(Nov. 8) Emory University's Whitney Briggs broke a scoreless tie in double overtime with her sixth goal of the season, as the Eagles kept their hopes alive for a share of the University Athletic Association (UAA) title with a thrilling 1-0 win over Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.

The victory sets up a day of scoreboard watching for the Eagles, who will now wait to see the results from the Washington University (Mo.) - University of Chicago (Ill.) match currently underway.  Should Chicago win, the Eagles will finish the year as co-UAA Champions along with Washington.  However, Emory cannot win the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which Washington University will earn either way based on a tiebreaking head-to-head win over Eagles earlier in the season.

Briggs scored the goal unassisted with just 4:41 left to play before the match would officially end in a tie.  The senior co-captain, who will finish the season second on the team in goals scored, has now scored four goals over the last four Emory games, and leads the team with four goals in UAA matches this season.  Briggs also took sole possession of first in the conference with three game-winning goals in UAA contests.

It was a hard fought contest, but the Eagles had their opportunities to score throughout the match.  Emory registered a total of 16 shots during the game, including five in the two overtime periods.

Meanwhile, the Emory defense turned in one of its best performances of the season in the shutout.  The Tartans were able to take just five shots in the match, only two of which were on goal.  In addition, Emory's backline held the Tartans without a shot in either of the overtimes, and withstood six corner kicks during the course of the match.

The Eagles have had a knack for the dramatic this season, particularly in overtime.  With Saturday's win, Emory improved to 3-0-1 in overtime, and all three of the victories have been 1-0 wins in the second overtime period.  Briggs joins teammates Grace Lam and Shayna Bryan as Eagles to score ‘golden goals' this season.

Emory senior goalkeeper Sarah Wilkerson played the entirety of the match between the pipes, turning away both shots on goal for her eighth complete-game shutout of the season.  It was the 10th shutout overall for Emory this season.

With Saturday's win, the Eagles conclude the regular season with a 15-3-1 overall record (6-1-0 UAA), while Carnegie Mellon dropped to 8-6-3 (2-4-1 UAA).  Emory will now wait for the announcement of the ‘Pool C' at large bids to the NCAA Tournament, which are awarded teams that did not receive an automatic bid from their conference.

EAGLES LOOK FOR A WIN OVER CARNEGIE MELLON AND SOME OUTSIDE HELP FOR A SHARE OF THE UAA CHAMPIONSHIP

(Nov. 5) Emory University Women's Soccer will try to keep its hope alive for a share of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, as the Eagles will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to face Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday at 11:00 AM.

Although the Eagles are out of the running for the automatic bid issued to the UAA winner based on a tiebreaker loss to Washington University (Mo.), with an Emory win on Saturday and a Washington loss to the University of Chicago (Ill.), the Eagles will earn a share of the UAA Championship with the Bears.

Emory will enter Saturday's match with a 14-3-1 overall record, including a 5-3-1 record in matches away from the Woodruff P.E. Center.  Emory, which received votes in the latest NSCAA Division III National poll, is coming off a pair of weekend wins over Brandeis University and New York University

Carnegie Mellon will enter the meeting with an 8-5-3 record, and in fourth-place in the UAA with a 2-3-1 record in conference matches.  Emory is 13-3-0 all time against the Tartans, including a 1-0 win last season.  Whitney Briggs has a career goal against Carnegie Mellon, and Joyce Lam and Alexa Wahr have each recorded a pair of assists over their careers against the Tartans.

Emory Notes
The Eagles are ranked 32nd in Division III in team goals-against average (0.593) and 33rd in won-lost-tied percentage (0.806)... Emory goalkeeper Sarah Wilkerson is ranked 33rd in the Nation with a 0.587 goals-against average... The Eagles are trying to make the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive year and the fourth time in the last five seasons... Emory will have to wait for the NCAA to award the Pool C bids, which will take place on Monday, November 10th.

EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS NYU, BUT LOSES OUT ON AUTOMATIC NCAA BID

(Nov. 2) The Emory University Women's Soccer Team extended its University Athletic Association (UAA) winning streak to four matches, as the Eagles defeated New York University 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The win keeps the Eagles alive for a UAA Championship, but with a Washington University (Mo.) victory over Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) earlier in the day, the Eagles have lost out on the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament awarded to the UAA winner, based on tiebreakers.  Emory could still advanced to the NCAA Tournament with an at large bid, awarded at the completion of the season.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first half, when an Emory free kick in the 13th minute lead to a misplay by NYU, forcing an ‘own goal.'  The goal would be the only one of the first half for either team.

Despite only notching the ‘own goal' in the first half, the Eagles dominated play during the frame.  Emory took 13 first half shots, compared to just three for the Violets, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Emory would not wait long in the second half to lengthen its lead.  Junior midfielder Olivia Lezanski scored her second goal as an Eagle off an assist from Talia Dweck in the 57th minute, extending the Emory lead to 2-0.  The assist was Dweck's team-leading seventh of the season, and her third in Emory's last three UAA matches.

The Eagles would tack on a pair of insurance goals, as Joyce Lam scored her fifth of the season off an assist from Alyssa Perez in the 69th minute, and, in the 81st minute, senior Alexa Wahr recorded her second score of the season on a free kick from Kerri Lydon.  NYU's Filiz Kipcakli would scored in the 87th minute to pull the game to within three goals, but it was too little too late for the Violets.

Emory's Sarah Wilkerson played the entirety of the match in goal, allowing one goal and converting two saves.

With the win, Emory improved to 14-3-1 overall (5-1-0 UAA), while NYU dropped to 10-7-0 (2-4-0 UAA) with the loss.  The Eagles clinched at least a share of second-place in the UAA, marking the second-consecutive year that Emory has finished second or better in the conference.  Should the Eagles win their final game of the season next Saturday at Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.), and Washington University loses to the University of Chicago (Ill.), the Eagles and the Bears will be crowned co-UAA Champions.

BRIGGS' TWO-GOAL DAY PACES EMORY IN 3-1 WIN OVER BRANDEIS

(Oct. 31) Emory University's Whitney Briggs scored two goals, as the Eagles defeated University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Brandeis University (Mass.) 3-1 in Waltham, MA.

The Eagles were forced to come from behind in the match, after Brandeis took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Melissa Gorenkoff from 35 yards out in the 22nd minute.  The score would remain 1-0 heading into the half.

The Eagles, however, would dominate the second half.  Emory defender Grace Lam would even the match, heading in a Talia Dweck corner for her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at a goal apiece in the 64th minute.

The assist for Dweck was her team-leading sixth of the season.

Less than three minutes later, Briggs would strike with her first of two scores, turning on a pass from Alexa Wahr putting the shot in the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.  In the 72nd minute, Briggs would notch her second goal of the day, scoring on a left-footed shot from just outside the box, on a pass from Olivia Lezanski.

Three of Briggs' five goals this season have come in conference play, and the senior co-captain has now scored in two-straight games for Emory.  Her five goals during the year are one shy of her personal best, set in 2006.  The game-winning goal was the third of the season for Briggs, and her second in UAA play.

The win brings Emory's UAA winning streak to three games, as the Eagles improved to 4-1-0 in conference play.  Emory remains one game behind Washington University (5-0-0 UAA) in the UAA standings, as the Bears could clinch the conference title with a win on Sunday, when they play at Case Western Reserve University.

Emory, 13-3-1 overall this season, will travel to New York University on Sunday, to face the Violets at 11:00 AM.

GRACE LAM AND SARAH WILKERSON NAMED TO THE ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM

(Oct. 30) Two members of the Emory University Women's Soccer Team were recognized for their performances both on the pitch and in the classroom, as Sarah Wilkerson and Grace Lam each earned spots on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team.

This is the first Academic All-District honor for Sarah Wilkerson, who took over as the Eagles' full-time starting goalkeeper for the first time this season.  Wilkerson has started every game in goal for Emory, recording a 0.53 goals-against average and a 0.860 save percentage with seven shutouts, helping the Eagles to a 12-3-1 record.  The senior has recorded a 3.52 grade point average while majoring in anthropology and human biology.

This marks the second-straight year that senior defender Grace Lam has earned an Academic All-District honor, after earning a spot on the first team in 2007.  She has led an Emory defense that has compiled a 0.54 goals-against average this season, on pace for one of the lowest in school history.  Lam has also contributed with three goals on the offensive end this season.  She has compiled a 3.58 cumulative grade point average as a business and economics major.

Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Emory nominees represent the "college division" in District 3 which is composed of NCAA Division II and III, and NAIA schools in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER LOOKS TO STAY ALIVE IN THE UAA CHAMPIONSHIP RACE

(Oct. 29) The Emory University Women's Soccer Team will look to make up ground in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings, as the Eagles will take on Brandeis University on Friday, and New York University on Sunday.

The Eagles are currently in second-place in the UAA with a 3-1-0 conference record, trailing only Washington University (4-0-0), which holds the tiebreaker over Emory.  The University of Rochester, New York University, the University of Chicago, and Brandeis University are all tied for third in the conference with a 2-2-0 record, followed by Carnegie Mellon University (1-3-0) and Case Western Reserve University (0-4-0).

Emory will begin the weekend with a 12-3-1 record this season, and will look to recover from a 2-1 loss to the University of the South (Tenn.) last Saturday.  The Eagles, currently ranked fifth in the South Region, are 3-3-1 in matches away from the Woodruff P.E. Center this season.

Brandeis will enter Friday's match with a 9-6-1 record, including a 5-3-0 mark at home this season.  The Eagles are 13-5-3 all time against the Judges, including a 2-1 win last season.  Emory's Joyce Lam is the only active Emory player to have scored a goal against Brandeis.  The match will begin at 5:00 PM on Friday.

NYU will open the weekend with a 10-5-0 record, including a perfect 4-0-0 mark in home games, and will face Carnegie Mellon University on Friday before facing the Eagles.  Emory is 9-0-4 all time against the Violets, including a scoreless tie last season.   Alexa Wahr and Whitney Briggs have each scored goals for the Eagles over their careers against NYU.  Sunday's match is slated to start at 11:00 AM.

Emory Notes
Emory's Whitney Briggs has scored three goals in the last six matches for the Eagles... She is currently fourth on the team with eight points this season... Junior Shayna Bryan leads all Emory scorers with eight goals and 19 points... Bryan has also scored four game-winning goals, which leads the squad... Emory is ranked 26th in Division III with a 0.544 team goals-against average.

EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS 2-1 LOSS TO SEWANEE

(Oct. 25) The Emory University Women's Soccer team, ranked 18th in Division III, suffered its third loss of the season, falling 2-1 to the University of the South (Tenn.) on Saturday.

After the Eagles' fell behind in the first half on a Sewanee goal in the 29th minute, Emory's Whitney Briggs tied the match with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute.  The Tigers, however, would strike back, scoring in the 81st minute with what would eventually be the game-winning goal.

Briggs' goal was her third of the season.  Each of the senior's three goals have either tied or won the game for Emory.

The Emory loss did not come from a lack of opportunities for the Eagles.  Emory dominated Sewanee in most of the match's statistics, including a 20-6 advantage in shots, an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, and an 11-1 tilt in corner kicks.  However, despite the Eagles were unable to capitalize on their chances throughout the match, leading to the Tiger's victory.

Although the Eagles have excelled at home this season, going 9-0-0 at the Woodruff P.E. Center, Emory's fortunes have not been the same on the road.  The team has now lost three-consecutive road matches, and is just 3-3-1 in games away from home this season.

The Eagles will look to reverse that trend next weekend, as the team will continue its UAA schedule in Boston, MA, against Brandeis University on Friday, and at New York University on Sunday.

BRYAN SCORES THE ‘GOLDEN GOAL' IN 23rd-RANKED EMORY'S DOUBLE-OVERTIME WIN OVER ROCHESTER

(Oct. 19) Emory University's Shayna Bryan broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 106th minute of play, giving the 23rd-ranked Eagles a 1-0, double-overtime upset victory over the 18th-ranked University of Rochester (N.Y.).

The two evenly-matched University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents played scoreless soccer through the first 90 minutes of regulation, the 10 minutes of the first overtime, and the first five minutes of the second overtime, before Bryan was able to break through for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

The goal came off a pass into the box by Talia Dweck, giving the junior her team-leading fifth assist of the campaign.

The contest was back and forth throughout, with the Yellowjackets holding a slight 10-9 advantage in shots at the end of regulation.  Emory's defense, however, would hold Rochester without a shot in either overtime frame, while the Eagles were able to muster two of their own, including the game-winning shot by Bryan.

Emory goalkeeper Sarah Wilkerson played the entire came between the pipes, recording her seventh complete game shutout of the season, and lowering her goals against goals-against average to 0.43 this season.  Wilkerson has been a factor in every Emory decision this season.

The win also came on the Eagles' ‘Senior Day' as the nine graduating seniors on the squad were honored prior to the start of the match.

With the win, Emory remains in second-place in the conference with a 3-1-0 record, and a 12-2-1 record overall, while Rochester dropped to 2-2-0 in UAA matches, and to 9-3-2 overall.  The match was the final regular-season home contest of the year for Emory.

RAIN DOESN'T STOP 23rd-RANKED EAGLES IN 3-1 VICTORY OVER UAA RIVAL CASE WESTERN RESERVE

(Oct. 17) The Emory University Women's Soccer team picked up its second University Athletic Association (UAA) win of the campaign, as the 23-ranked Eagles defeated the Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) Spartans 3-1 at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The Eagles and the Spartans were forced to battle through a rainy first half, particularly the first 15 minutes of the frame when the rain coming down the hardest.

The precipitation did not serve to bring down Emory's play, however, as the Eagles dominated through much of the first half.  After threatening to score throughout the period, the Eagles finally broke through in the 22nd minute, as Alexa Wahr scored her first goal of the season, off an assist from Claire Rubel, to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  Emory would carry the lead into halftime.

The first half belonged to Emory, which controlled the ball for most of the half.  The Eagles were able to take 10 shots in the first frame, compared to just a pair for the Spartans.

As the rain slowed at the start of the second half, the offensive play for both sides picked up.  Emory would strike again, as Shayna Bryan scored her team-leading seventh goal of the campaign, off Lauren Smith's second assist of the year, to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Case Western Reserve would make it a one-goal game again, as Ana Arruda notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 75th minute, off a free kick from five yards outside the box to bring the score to 2-1.  The goal, however, would be the Spartans' only shot of the second half, as the Eagles defense continued their lock-down play.

However, Emory would secure the victory in the 84th minute of play, as a Joyce Lam corner kick found the feet of her twin sister Grace Lam, who, standing in front of the goal, finished the play for her third goal of the season, capping off a 3-1 victory.

Senior Sarah Wilkerson earned her 11th victory in goal for the Eagles this season, making a pair of first half saves during the match.

Emory improved to 2-1-0 in UAA play with the victory over Case Western Reserve, and to 11-2-1 overall during the season.  The Spartans fell to 7-7-0 overall, including a 0-3-0 mark in conference play.  Emory will be back in action on Sunday for the final home game of the season, as the Eagles will celebrate ‘Senior Day' against the University of Rochester (N.Y.).

The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the match, as Shayna Bryan scored the game's opening goal off a throw in from Talia Dweck that was redirected by Whitney Briggs.  However, the Maroons would strike back on a Claire Gill goal in the 31st minute to even the score at a goal apiece heading into the half.

The second half, however, would belong to Briggs, who gave the Eagles the advantage with a breakaway goal in the 52nd minute, with assists from Bryan and Alexa Wahr.  The goal was the first of the season for the senior, who played both forward and on the backline for Emory during the game.

LAM AND BRIGGS TAKE HOME UAA WOMEN'S SOCCER ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS

(Oct. 1) After a pair of shutout victories last week, the 12th-ranked Eagles had two of its own named Athletes of the Week by the University Athletic Association (UAA), as senior forward Joyce Lam was named the offensive player of the week, while Whitney Briggs garnered defensive player of the week honors.

Lam scored the game-winning goal in each of the Eagles' two wins last week.  On Tuesday, Lam notched her second goal of the season to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead over Brewton Parker College, en route to a 6-1 victory.  The forward drove the Eagles to a 1-0 double-overtime victory with a goal against ninth-ranked Berry College, scoring in the 104th minute of the match.  Lam has scored three goals this season for six points, third-best on the team.

Briggs played over 148 scoreless minutes in the backfield last week to secure the two Emory shutouts.  Briggs played all 103:21 minutes of the Eagles' double-overtime victory over Berry College, holding the ninth-ranked Vikings to just four shots on goal.  Briggs also played the first half of the Eagles' win over Brewton Parker College, holding the Barons without a shot.  With Briggs on the field last week, the Emory defense allowed opponents just five shots, four of which were on goal.

Lam and Briggs join Grace Lam and Sarah Wilkerson as other Emory players to earn UAA Athlete of the Week honors this season.

19th-RANKED EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS BERRY IN SECOND OVERTIME PERIOD

(Sep. 28) In a defensive battle between two teams each highly ranked in their respective divisions,  Emory University's Joyce Lam notched a ‘golden goal' three and a half minutes into the second overtime period, as the Eagles, ranked 19th in Division III, defeated Berry College (Ga.), ranked ninth in the NAIA, 1-0.

Lam's goal came off a corner kick from senior Kerri Lydon, breaking a scoreless tie with just over six and a half minutes left to play.  The goal was the third of the season, and the first game-winner this year, for Lam.  Lydon earned her third assist of the year with the corner kick.

While the offense was the story at the end of the game for the Eagles, the Emory defense was once again the catalyst for victory.  Emory's backfield allowed the Lady Vikings to take just five shots, none of which came in either of the two overtime periods.  The Eagles' senior goalkeeper, Sarah Wilkerson, was able to clean up the four shots on goal, converting four saves for her sixth shutout of the season.

Wilkerson lowered her season goals against average to 0.21, and is on pace to set a new school record in the category.  As a team, Emory has recorded a 0.29 goals against average this season.

Emory's offense was able to muster 19 shots during the match, 13 of which were on goal, putting pressure on Berry goalkeeper Vanessa Zimmermann, who made 12 saves during the match.  The Eagles once again dominated the corner kick category, taking seven during the match, and have now taken 53 corner kicks this season, while allowing just 13 to opponents.

The Eagles continued their dominance at the Woodruff P.E. Center, improving to 6-0-0 at home this season.  Emory has won 18-consecutive home matches, dating back to the 2006 season, and is now 22-1-2 over its last 25 home games.

The win vaults Emory's record to 8-1-1 this season, while Berry dropped to 6-3 on the campaign.  The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, October 4th, hosting the University of Chicago (Ill.) for the opening match of University Athletic Association play for the Eagles.

The Eagles took a commanding five-goal lead heading into half time, as Shayna Bryan, Joyce Lam, Kerri Lydon, Olivia Lezanski, and Lauren Smith each scored goals.  Bryan and Smith's  goals were the fourth of the season for each player, good for a tie for the team lead in the category.

The Eagles played solid defense for most of the second half, playing a ball-control game throughout most of the frame.  The Lady Barons got on the board late with a goal in the 86th minute, but Emory would answer back a minute later, as freshman Liz Harlan would notch her first career goal.  Freshman Kelly Short recorded her second assist of the game on the play.

The Eagles outshot the Lady Barons by a 28-2 mark in the match, including an 18-0 mark in the first half.  Emory also took 13 corner kicks to Brewton-Parker's two.

NO. 9 WOMEN'S SOCCER SPLITS WEEKEND MATCHES WITH WIN OVER MISSISSIPPI, LOSS TO RHODES

(Sep. 15) The Emory University Women's Soccer Team suffered its first setback of the 2008 season, a 1-0 last-minute loss to Rhodes College (Tenn.), just one day after a 2-1 win over Mississippi College.

On Saturday, Emory forward Shayna Bryan stole the show for the Eagles, playing a role in both of the Emory goals during the win over Mississippi.  Bryan scored the first goal of the match in the 54th-minute of play, off an assist from Melanie Levy, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

After Mississippi evened the match at 1-1 with just over 13 minutes left to play, Bryan assisted on Lauren Smith's game-winning goal in the 84th-minute, to all but wrap up the win for the Eagles.

Once again, Emory outshot its opponent by a wide margin, holding Mississippi to nine shots while the Eagles took 18 of their own.  Goalkeeper Sarah Wilkerson earned the win, making six saves during the match.  The goal scored by the Choctaws ended a six-match shutout streak for the Eagles, the second-longest in school history.

On Sunday, the Eagles' fortunes would not be as favorable.  After playing 89 minutes of scoreless soccer with Rhodes College (Tenn.), Emory was the victim of an own-goal, taking a late 1-0 loss to the Lynx.

The loss comes despite the fact that the Eagles once again controlled the ball for the majority of the game.  Emory held Rhodes to just one shot during the day, and no shots on goal.  Meanwhile, the Eagles were able to take 11 shots, seven of which were on goal, but were unable to notch a score during the match.

Sunday's match ended a five-game road trip for the Eagles and a grueling streak of six matches over a 12-day period.  Emory will now get a long rest period, before the team returns to action on Tuesday, September 23rd, against Brewton Parker College (Ga.).

The 1-1-0 weekend brings the Eagles, ranked ninth in the Nation, to 6-1-1 overall this season.

NINTH-RANKED EMORY WINS 1-0 OVER MARYVILLE COLLEGE

(Sep. 10) It was the same story on a different day for the Emory University Women's Soccer Team, as an impenetrable defense and timely scoring marked a 1-0 win over Maryville College (Tenn.) on Tuesday night.

Making her first start of the season, senior Joyce Lam notched her first goal of the season on a header during the 68th-minute of the match.  Sophomore Melanie Levy was credited with the assist on the play, her first of the season.

As in each of the previous six contests this season, one goal was all the Emory defense would need.  The Eagles' backfield would hold Maryville to nine shots during the match, just five of which were on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Sarah Wilkerson would turn away each shot on target, making five saves for her fifth shutout of the season.

Emory would go on to outshoot Maryville 14-9 during the contest, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.  The Eagles' stingy defense has allowed 28 shots to opponents over the first six games of the season, an average of 4.67 shots per game.  Meanwhile, Emory's offense has mustered 113 shots during the same stretch for an average of 18.83 shots per game.

Emory's six-game shutout streak is one shy of school-record for the longest such stretch at the beginning of a season.  The Eagles opened the 2005 season with seven-consecutive shutouts (matching a school record for consecutive shutouts at any time during a season), en route to finishing the season with 13, the third-best total in school history.  Emory also recorded 13 shutouts last season.

The win kept Emory undefeated on the season, as the Eagles rose to 5-0-1 on the year.  The loss was the first of the season for the Scots, who dropped to 2-1-0 for the campaign.

The ninth-ranked Eagles are now three games into a five-game road trip, the squad's longest in 2008.  So far, the Eagles have performed successfully on the trip, going 2-0-1 during the first three games, with the tie coming against Wittenberg University (Ohio), now the sixth-ranked team in the Nation.

Emory will look to match a school record on Saturday, as the Eagles will try for their seventh-straight shutout at Mississippi College.  On Sunday, the Eagles will conclude their road trip with a game against Rhodes College (Tenn.), which received votes in the latest NSCAA Division III poll.

EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER TO CONTINUE ROAD SWING AGAINST MARYVILLE COLLEGE

The Scots will enter the match with a 2-0-0 record this season, and ranked seventh in the South Region.  Emory is 8-1-1 all time against Maryville, including a 2-0 victory last season.  During the victory last season, Stephanie de Souza and Grace Lam each scored goals for the Eagles, while Sarah Wilkerson recorded a 90-minute, three-save shutout in goal.

EMORY'S DEFENSE CONTINUES SCORELESS STREAK WITH 1-0 WIN OVER DEPAUW

(Sep. 7) 12th-ranked Emory University held another opponent scoreless on Sunday, as the women's soccer team defeated DePauw University (Ind.) 1-0 on Sunday.

The lone goal of the game was scored on a penalty kick by senior Maya Vankineni, who notched her first score of the season.  The match-deciding penalty kick came in the 29th minute of the match.

The one goal is all the stalwart Emory defense would need, as it would register its fifth shutout in as many games this season.  The Eagles outshot DePauw 16-5 during the match, and now have outshot opponents 99-19 through the first five games of the season, while outscoring opposing teams 12-0.

Senior Sarah Wilkerson recorded her fourth shutout of the campaign, converting five saves during the match.  She has started all five matches for the Eagles this season, playing 425 scoreless minutes between the pipes.

The win raises Emory's record to 4-0-1 this season, while DePauw falls to 1-3-0 with the loss.  Emory will continue its five-game road trip on Tuesday, as the team will travel to Maryville College (Tenn.).

NO. 12 EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER AND EIGHTH-RANKED WITTENBERG BATTLE TO SCORELESS TIE

(Sep. 6) The Eagles defense continued to hold strong during its first meeting against a ranked team in 2008, as 12th-ranked Emory University played to a scoreless tie against eighth-ranked Wittenberg University (Ohio).

Emory once again outshot its opponents, as the Eagles defense held Wittenberg to just six shots, while Emory mustered 13 of its own.  The Eagles' defense has yet to allow a goal this season, holding opponents to just 12 shots through the first four games of the campaign.

Senior Sarah Wilkerson played the entire game in goal, recording eight saves during the 110 minute period.  Sophomore Melanie Levy led the team with three shots, while Shayna Bryan, Meghan McMahon, and Liz Harlan each took two.

The tie brings Emory's record to 3-0-1 on the campaign.  The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, facing DePauw University (Ind.).

Emory will look to continue its defensive dominance, after holding each of its first-three opponents of the 2008 season scoreless.  The Eagles have now allowed just three goals in their last 12 matches dating back to last season.  Offensively, Shayna Bryan, Lauren Smith, and Stephanie de Souza each have two goals and one assist for five points this year, while Talia Dweck has five points of her own with one goal and three assists.  The Eagles are ranked second in the South Region, according to the latest NSCAA poll.

Wittenberg will enter Saturday's contest ranked eighth in the nation and first in the Great Lakes Region.  The Tigers are 2-0-0 this season, and like the Eagles, are yet to allow a goal on the campaign.  This will be the first meeting between the two programs.

On Sunday, the Eagles will face off against DePauw University, the ninth-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region.  The Tigers are 1-1-0 this season.  Sunday's contest will be the first meeting between the two squads.

14th-RANKED EMORY REMAINS PERFECT WITH SHUTOUT OF AGNES SCOTT

(Sep. 2) The defense of the 14th-ranked Emory University Women's Soccer Team remained perfect on the season, as the Eagles picked up their third-consecutive shutout to begin the 2008 campaign with a 5-0 win over Agnes Scott College (GA.).

The Eagles controlled the ball for the majority of the game, taking 30 shots to the Scotties' two.  Emory has now outscored its opponents 11-0 through the first three games of the year, while outshooting its opponents 57 to four.

Emory's first goal of the evening came off the leg of Shayna Bryan, as the junior recorded her second goal of the season during the sixth minute of the game.  Exactly three minutes later, Talia Dweck notched her first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Claire Rubel.  Sophomore Stephanie de Souza would record her initial score of the season with a goal in the 31st minute off an assist from Kerri Lydon, giving Emory a 3-0 halftime lead.

Emory's first goal of the second half came from Lauren Smith, her second of the season, in the 58th minute off an assist from de Souza.  De Souza would later notch her second goal of the game off a steal in the 85th minute.

With the victory, Emory improved to 3-0-0 this season, and 15-0-1 in its last 16 home matches, a streak dating back to the 2006 season.  The Eagles will be back in action on September 6th, when Emory will take on Wittenberg University.

NO. 14 EMORY CLAIMS SECOND-STRAIGHT SHUTOUT WITH 2-0 WIN OVER METHODIST

(Aug. 30) Emory's defense held an opponent scoreless for the second-straight day, and Shayna Bryan and Annie Horn added goals for the Eagles, as Emory improved to 2-0-0 on the season with a 2-0 victory over Methodist University (N.C.).

Bryan struck early for the Eagles, notching her first goal of the season in the 15th minute of the match.  Junior Talia Dweck set the play up for her third assist of the season.

The one goal is all the Eagles would need, as Emory's defense has now produced 180 shutout minutes this season, allowing its two opponents to take just four shots, including three for the Monarchs during the contest.

Senior Sarah Wilkerson made one save, en route to her second shutout of the season, and fourth of her career.  She is now a perfect 7-0-0 in goal for Emory.

Senior Annie Horn would add her team-leading second goal of the season in the 88th minute, off an assist from Bryan.

The win extends 14th-ranked Emory's record to 14-0-1 in its last 15 home matches.  The Eagles will be back in action at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Tuesday, to face Agnes Scott College (Ga.) at 7:00 PM.

14th-RANKED EMORY TAKES 4-0 VICTORY OVER GUILFORD IN SEASON OPENER

(Aug. 29) The Emory Women's Soccer team wasted little time getting back into its form from a year ago, as the Eagles' exhibited the same stifling defense and timely scoring in a 4-0 season-opening win over Guilford College (N.C.).

The Eagles' defense was in top-form, allowing the squad to outshoot the Quakers 24-1 during the game, including a 13-0 advantage after the first half.  Emory senior goalkeeper Sarah Wilkerson would need to convert just one save during the game to earn the third shutout of her career.

Emory sophomore Lauren Smith scored the first, and eventual game-winning goal for the Eagles in the 18th minute, off an assist from freshman midfielder Olivia Lezanski.  The Eagles would strike one more time in the first half, as all-American defender Grace Lam converted a header on a Talia Dweck corner kick to spot the Eagles a two-goal lead in the 27th minute.

The Eagles would add two more goals in the second half.  Sophomore Meghan McMahon scored on a bender just out of the reach of the Guilford goalkeeper, off an assist from Smith in the 49th minute.  To cap the game off, senior Annie Horn scored in the 87th minute on a set play from Dweck, with an addition assist for freshman Liz Harlan.

Emory looked particularly strong on its set plays during the contest, which included a 6-0 Eagles' advantage in corner kicks.

The win brings 14th-ranked Emory's home unbeaten streak to 14 games (13-0-1).  The Eagles will be back in action at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Saturday, when they will face Methodist University (N.C.) at 8:30 PM.  The game will be webcasted with both video and audio on go.emory.edu.

14th-RANKED EMORY WOMEN'S SOCCER LOOKS TO FULFILL UAA COACHES' POLL PREDICTIONS IN 2008

(Aug. 27) The Emory University Women's Soccer team will head into the 2008 season with high expectations, from both within the program and externally, as the Eagles are predicted to finish first in the University Athletic Association (UAA), and are ranked 14th in Division III in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Preseason Poll.

The top ranking in the UAA's Coaches' Preseason Poll comes following the Eagles' second-place finish in the conference last season, a year which included a 16-2-2 overall record.  Emory advanced all the way to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, where the Eagles were eliminated by a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Lynchburg College (Va.).

"It was definitely a fantastic season," said Emory Head Coach Sue Patberg.  "But, I think we all felt like we ended a game short.  It definitely leaves you hungry and confident coming into the next season."

The Eagles' strength will likely be their defense, which finished the 2007 ranked 12th in the nation in goals against average (0.48).  Anchoring the back line for Emory will be senior Grace Lam, who earned all-America third team honors last season.  She will be joined once again by senior Whitney Briggs, who successfully made the transition from forward to defense to solidify Emory's backfield last season.  Senior Sarah Richards, and freshmen Emily Rubin, Claire Rubel, Alyssa Perez and Lidija Barauskas will look to round out a solid unit for the Eagles.

For the second-consecutive season, the Eagles will look to replace a senior goalkeeper, following the departure of all-South Region team member Emily Fedeles, who graduated after the 2007 season.  Senior Sarah Wilkerson enters the season with a 6-0-0 record and a 0.56 goals against average over close to 800 minutes in goal over her career.  Sophomore Kirsten Baecher will also look for time in goal, following her 31 shutout minutes and two saves in 2007.

Although the Eagles will be without the services of 2007 leading scorer Jamie English, who graduated following the 2007 season, Emory will return 11 of its 13 goal scorers from the previous season.  Senior forward Joyce Lam returns after matching a school record with 11 assists last season, to go along with her five goals for 21 points, while her fellow senior forward, Maya Vankineni returns for her second season with Emory, following a six-goal, six-assist debut in 2007.  Junior Shayna Bryan (four goals and two assists in 2007) and sophomore Lauren Smith (two goals and one assist last season) each look to factor in to Emory's offensive attack in 2008.  The Eagles will also add freshmen forwards Kelly Short and Liz Harlan into the mix.

Emory will also return an experienced core of midfielders.  Senior Alexa Wahr finished the 2007 season with five goals and seven assists for 17 points, good for fourth on the team.  Seniors Kerri Lydon and Annie Horn, junior Talia Dweck, and sophomores Melanie Levy, Mary Macon Price, Susan Socoloff, Stephanie de Souza and Meghan McMahon each appeared in at least 12 games for the Eagles last season, and will provide Emory with depth at the position.  Emory also adds freshmen Lana Fox, Caroline Coates, Olivia Lezanski, and Kate Nelson to the rotation in 2008.

Emory will look to continue its strong play at home, as the Eagles have gone undefeated over their last 13 games (12-0-1) at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.  However, Emory will have to overcome an early season schedule that not only features five of the team's first eight games on the road, but also four games over an eight-day period in early September.

"A challenge and a key for our season is that we have an enormous amount of games in a short period of time," said Coach Patberg.  "We are playing three games a week for the first three weeks, and we actually travel quite a bit as well."

The Eagles will open their season at home on August 29th against Guilford College (N.C.).  Emory starts its highly anticipated and competitive UAA schedule at home on October 4th against the University of Chicago (Ill.).  Should the Eagles fulfill the high expectations of the preseason, they will have a good shot to play well into November and deep into the NCAA Tournament.
