Emory University sophomore Caroline Coates
scored a ‘golden goal' for the Eagles with one second
remaining in the first overtime period, lifting the women's soccer
team to a 2-1 win over Birmingham Southern College on Tuesday
Night.
With the clock ticking down in the final seconds of the overtime
frame, Coates struck the game-winning goal off an assist from
senior Olivia Lezanski to clinch a victory for the
Eagles. The score was not only the first of the season for
Coates, but also her first career points.
After a scoreless first half, Emory took a 1-0 lead off sophomore
Kelly Short's second goal of the season in the
72nd minute. She was assisted by junior
Melanie Levy, her fourth helper in Emory's last
five contests.
Birmingham Southern would even the match with a goal in the
84th minute, eventually sending the contest into
overtime, before Coates' strike sent the Eagles home as
winners.
Despite the close score, the Eagles were in control throughout most
of the contest, taking 24 shots to the Panthers' five. Emory
kept the pressure on in the overtime period, holding a 5-0 edge in
shots on goal, including the game-winning score.
Tuesday's contest was a makeup from a rain-out between the two
teams last Friday. After a scheduled start of 7:00 PM, the
match was pushed back to accommodate Emory, as the team delayed due
to traffic in the Atlanta area from the recent flooding.
The Eagles improved to 3-1-3 with the win, and have now gone
undefeated in their last six matches. The Panthers fell to
2-4-0 with the loss.
The match concludes a four-game road trip for the Eagles, who will
return to the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday for
Homecoming, as Emory will take on Guilford College at noon.
