Dweck Ties Assist Record in 5-0 Win Over Carnegie Mellon

Dweck Ties Assist Record in 5-0 Win Over Carnegie Mellon

Emory University senior Talia Dweck matched the program's single-season record with her 11th assist of the season, and junior Melanie Levy scored a pair of goals, as the Eagles defeated the Tartans 5-0 in their University Athletic Association (UAA) finale.

Dweck assisted on a Lauren Smith goal (Smith's second of the season) in the 37th minute of play, which gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead at the time.  Her 11 assists this season tie her with former Eagles Joyce Lam (2007) and Carrie Eckenhoff (2001) for the team's single-season record.  It was also her UAA-best sixth assist in conference play.

It was also the 21st career assist for Dweck, moving her into a tie with Lam, Eckenhoff and Beth Schaefer (1990-93) for sixth in school history.  Dweck will look to break the single-season assist record tomorrow, in her collegiate finale.

Earlier in the game, Levy put the Eagles on top 1-0, scoring her third goal of the season in the 25th minute of action.  Freshman Merrill Bachouros assisted on the goal, her second of the season.

After taking a 2-0 lead into the half, the Eagles added onto their lead late in the game.  Levy struck with her second goal of the contest in the 75th minute of play from a pass from Lee Bachouros, her second assist of the campaign.

In the 86th minute, Merrill Bachouros would get her first-career goal, taking the ball from a Tartan defender and launching a long shot into the back for the score.  Freshman Hailey Morris would cap off the Eagles scoring, notching her third goal of the season in the final minute of the game, scoring off an assist from sophomore Liz Harlan

The five-goal output was the best for the Eagles this season, and their highest goal total since they defeated Oglethorpe University 6-0 on October 14, 2008.

Meanwhile, Emory's defense continued to play well, recording its second-straight shutout and its fifth overall this season.  The Eagles' backline allowed just five shots to the Tartans, all in the second half, and just three shots on goal.  Emory's defense has allowed six or less shots in each of its last four games, helping the team to a 3-1-0 record during that stretch.

Freshman goalkeeper Erica Stein converted two saves to improve to 4-1-0 this season, and lowered her goals against average to 0.37.  Stein has now recorded three shutouts in her five starts during the year.

The Eagles have now won three-straight games, matching their longest winning streak of the campaign, to improve to 7-5-5 this year.  In addition, Emory went to 2-3-2 in conference play this season.  Carnegie dropped to 6-8-2 overall in 2009, and to 1-4-2 in UAA matches.

Emory will wrap-up its 2009 season tomorrow at home against the University of the South at 12:30 PM.  The Eagles will also hold their annual ‘Senior Day' ceremonies, where they will honor graduating seniors Talia Dweck and Olivia Lezanski prior to the start of the game.
