Smith & Leonard Earn Final UAA Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Awards for 2010

Smith & Leonard Earn Final UAA Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week Awards for 2010

Emory University senior forward Lauren Smith and sophomore goalkeeper Kaele Leonard were named the final University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the 2010 women's soccer season, based on their performance the Eagles' two NCAA Tournament games last weekend.

Smith hit two key penalty kicks during the shootout of the Eagles' 1-1 tie against fifth-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.), allowing the team to advance to the quarterfinals.  Smith converted the opening kick of the shootout to put the Eagles on the board.  With the tally even at eight after 10 more rounds of penalty kicks, the forward kicked the match clincher to allow the Eagles to advance to the next round of the tournament.  Smith finished the season with seven goals and 14 points, both the second-best totals on the squad.

Meanwhile, Leonard did not allow a goal over the course of 110 minutes of the two NCAA Championship matches.  Against fifth-ranked Wheaton, Leonard made three saves in the second half and both overtime periods to force a 1-1 with the Thunder.  Then, during the ensuing shootout, she made a key save on a potential match-clinching shot by Wheaton, allowing Emory to eventually advance 9-8 on penalty kicks.  Facing second-ranked Hardin-Simmons University in the semifinals, which featured the top-ranked offense in Division III this season, the sophomore played a scoreless second half, converting four saves during the game.  Leonard, who began the week ranked sixth among Division III goalkeepers in save percentage and 10th in goals against average, finished her season with a school-record 0.33 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and a 12-1-4 record.

This was the first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of Smith's career.  Leonard earned the award for the second time this season.

Emory, which recorded its best NCAA Tournament performance in the program's history, finished the season with an overall record of 16-2-4.
