Five members of the seventh-ranked Emory University
women’s soccer team were named to the all-University Athletic
Association (UAA) teams for their performances during the 2010
campaign, including freshman Kelly Costopoulos,
who was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year.
Costopoulos becomes the first Emory player to be named the
UAA’s Rookie of the Year for women’s soccer, since the
award was created prior to the 2000 season. Coming off the
bench in all 18 games this season, Costopoulos finished the year
with five goals and one assist for 11 points. In UAA matches,
she scored four goals (two of which were game winners) and nine
points, both the second-best totals among all conference
players. Costopoulos earned a place on the all-UAA second
team for her efforts, as well.
In addition, freshman defender Lauren Gorodetsky
and senior forward Melanie Levy were each named to
the all-UAA first team. Costopoulos was Emory’s lone
representative on the second team, while sophomore defenders
Lee Bachouros and Emily Rubin
earned honorable mentions.
Gorodetsky finished the 2010 season with two goals and three
assists, including a pair of assists in Emory’s seven UAA
matches. The freshman was a key member of an Emory defense
that finished the regular season ranked 25th in Division
III with a 0.527 goals-against average, and allowed just four goals
in conference play.
Gorodetsky became the first Emory freshman to earn a spot on either
the all-UAA first or second team since Sarah Brody and Amy Bedford
accomplished the feat in 2002. She joins Brody, Brooke Lasher
(2000), Andrea Pawliczek (1998), Katie Coburn (1998), Anna Hemphill
(1997), Skye Hardin (1993), Rebecca Krohn (1991), Kristin Seaver
(1987) and Stacey Epstein (1987) as the only Emory freshmen to be
named to the all-UAA first team.
Levy earned a spot on the all-UAA team for the second-straight
year, after being named to the second team in 2009. The
senior is currently tied for the team lead with 14 points (five
goals and four assists), after starting all 18 Emory games this
season. In conference play, Levy scored one goal and added an
assist.
Bachouros and Rubin were both key components to the Emory defense
as well throughout the season. Bachouros, who started all 18
games for Emory, finished the year with a team-best five assists
and a game-tying goal against UAA-opponent Case Western
Reserve. Rubin, who started and played in 16 games for Emory,
finished the year with three goals and two assists, including two
game-winning goals. It was the first all-UAA honor for
Bachouros, and the second for Rubin, who was an honorable mention
last season as well.
Emory finished second in the UAA with a 4-1-2 conference record,
and ended the regular season with an overall record of
14-1-3. Emory will open the NCAA Tournament at home on
Saturday at 11:00 AM, as the Eagles will face Maryville College
(Tenn.) in the first round.
