Costopoulos Scores the ‘Golden Goal’ to Lift Emory over Case, 2-1, on Senior Day

Costopoulos Scores the ‘Golden Goal’ to Lift Emory over Case, 2-1, on Senior Day

Emory University freshman Kelly Costopoulos scored a 'golden goal' just a minute and 12 seconds into overtime, giving the Eagles a 2-1 come-from behind win over University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Case Western Reserve University during 'Senior Day' at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Costopoulos' goal capped off the comeback for the Eagles, who trailed 1-0 at the 72nd minute.  Sophomore Lee Bachouros evened the game with her first goal of the season at the 72:25 mark.  Bachouros, who now has seven points this season, was assisted by Lauren Gorodetsky on the play, the freshman's second career helper.

The game would remain tied throughout the rest of the second half, but early into the first overtime, junior Liz Harlan tracked down a ball that was heading towards the end line.  As Case goalkeeper Anna Kennedy made a move towards the ball, Harlan passed in front of the net to Costopoulos, who converted the shot for her fifth goal of the season and fourth in Emory's last three UAA games.  It was the second game-winning goal of the year as well for Costopoulos, and the first assist for Harlan.

The 'golden goal' was the third this season by an Eagle, as Emory improved to 3-0-3 in overtime matches this season.  Costopoulos became the third different Eagle to score a 'golden goal' this season, along with Lauren Smith (September 1st against Lee University) and Melanie Levy (September 5th against Lynchburg College).

Earlier in the game, the Eagles fell behind on a Kendra Simmons goal in the 28th minute, as Case's leading scorer this season converted a header off a short corner kick by Devyn Lee.  Lee, who took the corner kick, but got the ball back immediately after, was credited with her fifth assist of the year.

The goal ended a streak of seven-consecutive shutout appearances for Emory goalkeeper Erica Stein.  The sophomore's streak stretched over an impressive 371 minutes and 27 seconds of game time.  Sophomore Kaele Leonard earned the victory in goal, playing over 46 scoreless minutes to raise her record to 9-1-3 this season.

Emory finished the game with a 22-5 advantage in shots, including a 13-3 edge during the overtime period and an 11-3 bump in shots on goal.

The win raised Emory's record to 13-1-3 overall this season, including a 3-1-2 mark in conference matches.  However, despite the victory, the Eagles were eliminated from contention for the UAA Championship contention by the University of Chicago's 2-0 win over Brandeis University earlier in the day.  Case dropped to 9-7-1 overall.

The game was not only the final home game of the regular season for the Eagles, but also the final game at the WoodPEC for six Emory senior players - Sara Belsole, Melanie Levy, Meghan McMahon, Alyssa Perez, Emily Rubin and Lauren Smith.  The seniors were honored before the game, in appreciation of their contributions to the team over the last four years.

Emory will wrap up its regular season next weekend, traveling to Pittsburgh, PA to face Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
