Fourth-Ranked Eagles Defeat Host Maroons at Roanoke Invitational

Fourth-Ranked Eagles Defeat Host Maroons at Roanoke Invitational

The freshman offensive attack continue to reap benefits for the fourth-ranked Emory University women's soccer team, and its defense recorded the squad's second shutout of the season, as the Eagles defeated Roanoke College 2-0 in the opening game of the Roanoke Invitational on Saturday.

Emory was able to jump out to a lead in the 16th minute of play, as freshman Charlotte Butker sent a short pass over the middle of the field and just outside the box to junior Lee Bachouros, who placed a long-distance shot into the upper corner of the net, out of the reach of Roanoke's keeper for her first goal of the season.  The assist was the second in three games this season for Butker.

In the second half, after an injury to the Roanoke keeper delayed the game for over half an hour, the Eagles were able to extend their lead, with freshman Emily Feldman scoring her second goal of the season in the 71st minute.  Assisting on the score was sophomore Kelly Costopoulos, her first of the season.

Feldman is now tied for the Emory lead with two goals this season, and her five points lead all Eagles.  Butker has a team-high two assists, and is tied for second on the team with four points.

The Eagles' backline performed well throughout the game, limiting the Maroons to just two shots during the contest, both of which were on goal.  Meanwhile, Emory took eight shots, six on goal, and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, en route to the victory.

Emory junior goalkeepers Erica Stein and Kaele Leonard combined for their second shutout of the year, with Stein recording a first-half save, and Leonard notching one of her own in the second half.  The Eagles' net-minding duo has combined for a 0.31 goals against average this season.

With the win, Emory remained undefeated at 2-0-1 on the campaign.  The Maroons, who received votes in the latest NSCAA Division III poll, fell to 2-1-0 on the year with the loss.

The Eagles will wrap-up play at the Roanoke Invitational tomorrow at 1:30 PM, facing regional-rival Lynchburg College in a rematch of last year's NCAA Championship second round game, which Emory won 1-0 in overtime.

Emory Notes
