Mullins’ Goal Vaults #6 Emory to Win Over Case, First Place in UAA

Mullins’ Goal Vaults #6 Emory to Win Over Case, First Place in UAA

Emory University sophomore Clare Mullins broke a scoreless tie with a 79th minute goal to lift the sixth-ranked Eagles to a 1-0 win at 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve University.

The win raised Emory's University Athletic Association (UAA) record to 2-0-1, and, coupled with a loss by the University of Rochester earlier in the evening, gave the Eagles sole possession of first-place in the conference.  Emory currently holds a one-point lead in the standings over Case, Rochester and Carnegie Mellon, all 2-1-0 in UAA games.

A defensive battle throughout, the Eagles were finally able to break through in the 79th minute on the Mullins goal.  The game-winning score was set up by freshman Emily Feldman, who was able to get a breakaway down the near sideline, driving into the box and taking a shot on goal.  The Spartans' goalkeeper was able to deflect the shot, but senior Caroline Coates collected the rebound, passing out to Mullins who shot for the score.

The goal was the fourth of the season for Mullins, and her first game-winning goal of the campaign.  She is now second on the team in goals scored, and fourth on the squad with nine points.  Coates was credited with her second assist of the year, while Feldman picked up her fourth.

While Mullins scored the big goal for Emory, the Eagles star was once again its defense, which held Case Western Reserve to just four shots, only two of which were on goal.  Meanwhile, Emory was able to take 11 shots in the game (including nine in the second half), six of which were on frame.  The defense picked up its 10th shutout through 12 games this season, while lowering its goals-against average to .161 for the season.

Emory goalkeeper Kaele Leonard made a pair of second-half saves with 45 shutout minutes in goal, improving to 3-0-1 on the campaign with the victory.  Junior Erica Stein played the first 45 minutes of shutout soccer between the pipes for the Eagles.

With the victory, Emory matches a program record by going undefeated through its first 12 games of the season, improving to 10-0-2 on the campaign.  Case, which cracked the top-25 rankings for the first time in the program's history earlier in the week, dropped to 9-2-2 on the season with the loss.

Emory will face another key-conference matchup this weekend on Sunday at 1:30 PM against the University of Rochester, with the winner holding control of first-place in the conference.
