Fifth-Ranked Emory to Meet #20 Williams in NCAA Round of 16

Emory University will look to continue its run in the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament this weekend, as the fifth-ranked Eagles will play the 20th-ranked Williams College Ephs at 1:30 PM on Saturday in the round of 16 in Geneva, NY.

Weekend Schedule
In addition to Emory's game, second-ranked William Smith College will play 17th-ranked Middlebury College at 11:00 AM on Saturday.  The winners of the two games will meet in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Venue & Ticket Information
All matches this weekend are currently scheduled to be played on Cozzens Field, a natural grass field on the William Smith campus in Geneva, NY.  In the case of inclement weather, the games could be moved to Boswell Field, which features a field turf surface.

Fans can purchase tickets for this weekend's games at the gate prior to the start of the game. Ticket costs are $6 for general admission, $3 for students (with a valid ID), senior citizens and military personnel, and $2 for children ages 3-12.  Children two and under will be admitted for free.

Emory Eagles
Making their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Eagles, ranked fifth in the NSCAA poll and sixth in the D3Soccer.com poll, claimed a 3-0 win over Piedmont College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, followed by a 2-0 victory over Centre College in the second round.  Emory has an overall record of 17-0-2 on the season, including a 1-0-0 mark in neutral games and an 8-0-2 record in all games away from the Woodruff P.E. Center this weekend.  The Eagles also finished the campaign as the top-ranked team in the South Atlantic Region, and gained entry with an automatic berth, by virtue of winning the University Athletic Association (UAA).  The Eagles are led by seventh-year head coach Sue Patberg, who is 95-21-18 with Emory, and 241-109-36 for her 19-year career.

Williams Ephs
Williams, ranked 20th in the NSCAA poll and 18th in the D3Soccer.com poll, will enter play this weekend with an overall record of 12-4-3, including marks of 3-1-2 in neutral games and 8-3-2 in all games away from its home field.  Ranked third in the final NSCAA New England Region poll and claiming an at-large berth to the tournament, Williams advanced to the round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the first round, and a 2-1 victory over Westfield State University in the second round.  This year marked William's 13th berth into the NCAA Championships. 

The Ephs are led offensively by Brett Eisenhart (10 goals and one assist for 21 points) and Caitlyn Clark (46th among D-III players with 0.5 assists per game), while Laura Wann is ranked 41st among Division III goalkeepers with a 0.619 goals-against average and 46th with a 0.857 save percentage.  Williams is led by 10th-year head coach MIchelyn Pinard, who is 129-32-19 during her career.

Saturday will be the first meeting between Emory and Williams in the history of the two women's soccer programs.

William Smith Herons
William Smith has capitalized on its top-ranked defense throughout the season, en route to an 18-0-1 overall record, including a 10-0-1 mark at home this season.  Entering the tournament as the second-ranked team in both the NSCAA and D3Soccer.com polls, the Herons claimed their 22nd berth to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Liberty League Tournament earlier in the season.  William Smith reach the third round of the tournament after beating Lancaster Bible College 6-0 in the first round, and Wheaton College (Mass.) 1-0 in the second.  The team claimed the NCAA Championship in 1988, and finished as the tournament runner-up in both 1987 and 1997.

The Herons are led offensively by Dineo Mmutla (nine goals and four assists for 22 points) and Whitney Frary (eight goals and five assists for 21 points), while goalkeeper Amanda Davis leads all NCAA players with a 0.054 goals against average and a 0.955 save percentage.  William Smith is led by Aliceann Wilber, who has compiled a 441-121-50 record during her 32-year career, giving her the third-most wins among NCAA Division III women's soccer coaches all time.

Emory and William Smith have played just once before, over 20 years ago.  The two teams met on October 16, 1990 in Geneva, NY, with the Herons coming away with a 4-0 victory.

Middlebury Panthers
Making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance overall and fifth in the sectionals, Middlebury stands at 13-3-2 on the season, including an 0-0-1 mark at neutral sites and a 4-2-1 record on the road this season.  The Panthers, ranked 17th in the last NSCAA poll and 20th in the D3Soccer.com poll, reached the NCAA Tournament via an at-large berth.  Middlebury defeated Lasell College 2-0 in the first round of the tournament, followed by a 1-0 win over the 21st-ranked College of New Jersey in the second round.

Middlebury's leading scorer this season is Scarlett Kirk, who has scored 14 goals on the year for 28 points, ranking her 67th in Division III with 0.778 goals per game and 134th with 1.56 points per game.  In addition, goalkeeper Jocelyn Remmert is 29th among D-III players with a 0.873 save percentage and 61st with a 0.728 goals-against average.  The Panthers are coached by Peter Kim, who has an eight-year record of 89-33-17 with the team.

Emory matched a program record with its 17th win of the season on Sunday, previously achieved by the Eagles during the 2001 season… Emory has won a season-best nine-straight games, dating back to October 9th… The Eagles have scored 48 goals this season, tied for the seventh-most by an Eagles' squad, and the most by an Emory team since 2001… Emory's team .915 save percentage is the third-highest in the program's history, and 0.20 goals-against average is on pace for a program record… The program is 10-10-4 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, including a 7-4-1 mark under Coach Patberg's leadership… Emory is 2-0-2 against nationally-ranked teams this season, and 6-1-5 over the last two seasons… The Eagles are 25-30-14 all time against top-25 teams… Junior Merrill Bachouros (eight goals and four assists for 20 points) and freshman Emily Feldman (seven goals and six assists for 20 points) became the first pair of 20-point scorers in a season for Emory since 2007, when Jamie English (27 points) and Joyce Lam (21 points) accomplished the feat… This season marks the 12th time in the program's history that the team has registered multiple 20-point scorers… Bachouros was named the UAA's Offensive Athlete of the Week for Women's Soccer after scoring three goals during the Eagles' two NCAA Tournament games last weekend… The three goals tie her with teammate Kelly Costopoulos for the most tournament goals over a career in Emory history… Sophomore Lauren Gorodetsky was named the UAA's Defensive Player of the Week, after helping limit the Eagles' opponents to four shots, only one of which was goal… Gorodetsky was also named the UAA's Most Valuable Player for 2011, joining sophomore teammate Clare Mullins on the all-UAA first team… Junior Lee Bachouros, freshman Charlotte Butker, senior Caroline Coates, freshman Sarah Kuehl and junior Kaele Leonard were named honorable mentions to the all-UAA teams.
