Patberg Gets 100th Win in 6-0 Victory over BSC

Emory University head coach Sue Patberg claimed her 100th victory with the team on Friday night, as the second-ranked Eagles cruised to a 6-0 win over Birmingham-Southern College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Patberg claimed her 100th Emory victory in just her eighth season with the squad, improving to 100-22-20 during her time with the team.  Overall during her 19-year career as a collegiate coach, which included stays at the University of Minnesota and the University of Georgia, the Eagles' head coach has compiled a 246-110-38 record, making 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.

From early on, the Eagles left little doubt that Friday would be the night that Patberg would be able to reach the century mark.  In the 12th minute, a Karina Rodriguez pass to Kelly Costopoulos set up a breakaway for the Eagles.  While the Birmingham-Southern goalkeeper was able to knock the ball away from Costopoulos, it deflected right to sophomore Charlotte Butker, who took a shot from the edge of the box and right into the empty net with the keeper out of position.  It was the first goal of the season for Butker.

In the 28th minute, Costopoulos and Butker would be in the middle of another scoring opportunity.  This time, Costopoulos headed a pass to the near corner, where Butker made a short run before crossing the ball to the far side of the six-yard box.  Senior Lee Bachouros was waiting, and promptly finished with a shot into the net for her first goal of the year.

Lee Bachouros would strike again at the end of the half, scoring in the 44th minute.  This time, she received a short pass from Greta Jochmann, and sent a long shot into the upper corner of the net for her second goal of the game.

In the second half, Butker would continue to be the table-setter for Emory, crossing a pass from the far side of the field to the middle of the box, where senior Katy Kruse was able to finish with a header for her second goal of the year.  Kruse returned the favor in the 57th minute, assisting on Butker's second goal of the game.  The Eagles closed out the victory with an 84th minute goal for Merrill Bachouros, as the senior scored her second of the year off a rebounded shot from Meredith Doherty, who was credited with an assist on the play.

Emory's defense held the Panthers to just two shots during the game, neither of which was on goal.  The Eagles managed 31 shots of their own, including 14 on goal, during the contest.

Emory goalkeeper Erica Stein earned the win with a scoreless first half.  Kaele Leonard and Liz Arnold split time in goal during a scoreless second half.

With the victory, Emory improved to 5-0-2, while Birmingham-Southern dropped to 3-3-1 on the season with the loss.  The Eagles will look to keep their undefeated record intact on Sunday, when they play host to Berry College at 1:00 PM.

Emory Notes
The Eagles extended their regular season undefeated streak to 31 games, with a 27-0-4 record during that stretch… Charlotte Butker now leads all Eagles with nine points and five assists this season… The two-goal game was the first of her career, and her six points scored were a new career high as well… It was also the first career two-goal game for Lee Bachouros.
