#1 Eagles Hand Case 5-0 Loss in UAA Play

#1 Eagles Hand Case 5-0 Loss in UAA Play

The Emory University women's soccer team, ranked first among NCAA Division III squads, put together its most dominating University Athletic Association (UAA) performance of the season, defeating Case Western Reserve University 5-0 at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Friday night.

The win kept the Eagles perfect for the season, as Emory improved to 9-0-3 on the campaign.  The squad also remained in first place in the conference, improving to 2-0-1 in UAA games.  Case dropped to 7-3-3 for the season, and to 1-1-1 in UAA play with the loss.

Emory jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of action, when junior Veronica Romero struck with her third goal in the last two games, and her team-leading sixth of the season.  The play was started when sophomore Emily Feldman gained possession along the near sideline, driving past the defender and towards the box, before passing off to junior Kelly Costopoulos.  Costopoulos made a quick one touch pass to the far side of the 18-yard box, where Romero took a shot past the keeper for the score.

In the 30th minute, senior Katy Kruse scored her first of two goals in the first half, as a corner kick from senior Lee Bachouros was deflected by Feldman towards Kruse, who knocked it in for her fourth score of the year.  She picked up her fifth in the 42nd minute on a nice give-and-go with freshman Jordan Morell.  Kruse sent a pass from the near side of the 18-yard box to the far side to Morell, and then broke towards the middle of the six-yard box, where Morell returned the pass to set up a one-on-one with the keeper.  Kruse was able to convert the shot for the goal, giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage heading into the half.

It would be more of the same for the Eagles in the second half, as Emory took advantage of the long shot during the frame to score two additional goals.  In the 49th minute, Junior Clare Mullins took shot from about 25 yards away from the net, scoring her fourth goal of the season on the play and extending the Eagles' lead to 4-0.  Feldman capped off the Eagles scoring on the day with a floating shot from inside the 18-yard box in the 79th minute that went over the head of Case's keeper and into the net for her second score of the season.

Emory's defense limited Case to just six shots in the game, only two of which were on goal.  Meanwhile, Emory's attack mustered 19 shots of its own, including nine on goal.

The Eagles will wrap-up their home conference schedule on Sunday, as the Eagles will host the University of Rochester at 11:00 AM.  Prior to the start of the game, Emory will also honor its six graduating players as part of its annual 'Senior Day' ceremony.
