#12 Emory Upsets #4 Lynchburg in Home Opener

The 12th-ranked Emory University Women's Soccer team picked up a big win in its first home game of the 2013 campaign on Sunday afternoon, as the offense unleashed a three-score attack against fourth-ranked Lynchburg to defeat the Hornets 3-1 at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Emory, now 3-2-1 on the season, extended its home undefeated streak to 25 games with the victory, two shy of the longest mark in school history.  Lynchburg absorbed its first loss of the campaign in the game, falling to 5-1-0.

The three goals in the game were a season best for Emory, which had scored just four goals in their previous five contests combined.  Meanwhile, the three goals allowed matched what the Hornets defense had allowed all season before Sunday.

The Eagles took a lead in the seventh minute, when senior Veronica Romero scored her second goal of the year to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.  After a pass from the backfield from freshman Hannah Meyer set up a one-on-one with Romero and the keeper, Romero took an initial shot that was saved, but recovered the loose-ball rebound and followed with a second shot that would find the back of the net.

Emory buffered its lead in the 18th minute with what would prove to be the game-winning goal, when senior Kelly Costopoulos scored her second goal of the season, following a cross from Romero.  The Eagles would carry the 2-0 lead into halftime.

Lynchburg cut the lead to 2-1 in the 70th minute, when Dessi Dupuy headed in a free kick from Jessie Gonzalez to put the Hornets on the board.

However, Costopoulos would secure the victory with her second goal of the game and third of the season in the 73rd minute, scoring off a cross from Lauren Drosick.

Costopoulos now leads all Eagles scorers with three goals this season, and her 23 career goals are the seventh-most in the program's history.  In addition, the game winning goal was the 10th of her career, tying her with Lisa Leff (1987-90) for the third-most over an Emory career.

For the second-straight game, sophomore Liz Arnold played all 90 minutes in goal, converting three saves and securing her second victory of the season to improve to 2-1-1 for the year.  Karsen Schottleutner went the distance in goal for the Hornets, taking the loss to fall to 4-1-0.

Emory outshot Lynchburg 17-10 in the contest, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.

The Eagles will return to action on Friday, September 20th, traveling to Birmingham-Southern College for an 8:00 PM match.
