Ninth-Ranked Eagles Score Season-High Five Goals in Win over Rhodes

Ninth-Ranked Eagles Score Season-High Five Goals in Win over Rhodes

The ninth-ranked Emory University Women's Soccer Team erupted for a season-high five goals against Rhodes College on Saturday afternoon and the defense held the Lynx without a shot on goal, as the Eagles claimed a 5-0 win on Homecoming Day at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The win was the fourth-straight for the Eagles, each of which has come against an in-region opponent.  Emory now stands at 6-2-1 for the season, while the Lynx lost for the first time in their last eight contests, dropping to 7-2-0 overall.

It also marked the 26th-consecutive home game for Emory without a loss, one shy of the program record, set from 2006-2009.  The Eagles are now tied with Chapman University (2000-2002) for the 18th-longest home undefeated streak in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer history.

Junior Charlotte Butker paced the Eagles offensively with her first two goals of the season, including the eventual game-winner in the 15th-minute off action off a cross from sophomore Jordan Morell.  Emory would add on one more score in the first half, as freshman Cristina Ramirez scored her team-leading third of the season in the 29th minute, with assists to juniors Meredith Doherty and Karina Rodriguez.

Emory wasted little time adding onto its lead in the second half, as senior Veronica Romero matched the team lead with her third goal of the year on an unassisted shot just a minute and twelve seconds into the frame.  Butker buffered the lead with her second goal in the 55th minute off assists from Romero and junior Claudia Rowe.  Capping off the scoring on the day was Rodriguez, who sealed the win with her first goal of the season in the final minute of play, off an assist from senior Samantha Bleiweis, the first of her career.

Emory outshot Rhodes 36-5 in the game, including a 15-0 edge in shots on goal.  Sophomore Liz Arnold and junior Gabrielle Pelura combined for the shutout in goal, the team's third-straight clean sheet and fourth overall this year.

Emory will now turn its attention towards its final game before the start of conference play, hosting Centre College at 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 29th, a rematch of the NCAA Tournament Second Round match from the last two seasons.
