Eighth-Ranked Emory Edges Case with Late Goal

Eighth-Ranked Emory Edges Case with Late Goal

Emory University senior Kelly Costopoulos broke a scoreless tie in the 84th minute with her fifth goal of the season, leading the eighth-ranked Eagles to a 1-0 win at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday afternoon.

The win was the Eagles' sixth in a row, and their 11th in their last 12 outings, as the squad improved to 13-3-1 overall and to 5-1-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play with one match left in the regular season.  Case dropped to 8-9-1 overall and to 0-5-1 in the UAA with the loss.

After the majority of the game went by without a goal being scored, the Eagles started to gain momentum and maintain possession for long stretches of time towards the middle of the second half.  The work paid off for Emory at the 83:02 mark, when Costopoulos slid into the box to knock a ball past the Case keeper following a cross from junior Jennifer Grant.  The play was started by a run from junior Emily Feldman, who was also credited with an assist on the play.

Costopoulos now has five goals and an assist for 11 points, tied for the third-most points scored by an Eagle this season. It was also her second game-winning goal of the season, and the senior captain moved into sole possession of third place in school history with 11 career game winning goals.

Meanwhile, the Emory defense turned in another strong effort, limiting the Spartans to just nine shots during the game, en route to the team's fourth-straight shutout and ninth overall this season.  Sophomore Liz Arnold played the full contest in goal, turning away each of the three shots on goal to record her fifth individual shutout of the campaign.  Arnold is now 12-2-1 this season with a 0.44 goals-against average and a .854 save percentage.

Despite the win by Emory, Washington University (Mo.) was able to clinch the UAA's automatic bid and at least a share of the conference title on Sunday with a win at New York University.  The Eagles could still tie the Bears for the UAA Championship with a win over Carnegie Mellon next Saturday and a Washington loss to Chicago.

Emory will host Carnegie Mellon in its regular season final on Saturday, November 9th at 1:30 PM.  Prior to the game, the Eagles will honor their seven graduating players with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony.
